New art by Charlene Cooper "B.O.M.B." Blood Of My Brothers

Greetings,
I am a local Philadelphia artist and this is my new release, I am using this piece to raise funds and awareness of the many African-Americans @ war and portions of proceeds from the sale of this print will help to support the efforts of the silly string campaign. If you are unaware please read more about this on www.abc.com. The organizers are parents of soldiers fighting in the Middle East, and the silly string helps the troops in locating booby traps without setting them off, because I am so passionate about this idea I am willing to donate because any effort to bring the US Troops home safely to their loved ones instead of a folded flag is all worth it to me, and that goes for troops of all races. I ask that you help me in my efforts, by purchasing, distributing or simply exposing this artwork to all. Please feel free to contact me at any time, and visit www.artwanted.com/CHARMAR for more artworks.
Peace & Blessings,
Charlene

Dennis Rolllins

Multi-award winning British jazz star

Dennis Rollins
has been selected as Guest Programme Director of this year’s Glasgow International Jazz Festival

We are about to launch a five-year plan that will take us beyond being a series of concerts. We are delighted that Dennis has agreed to be our inaugural Guest Programme Director. With performances, exhibitions and participative events, Dennis is going to help us celebrate the roots and the future of jazz
Simon Clark, Chair of Glasgow International Jazz Festival

Not only is 2007 the bi-centenary of the abolition of slavery in the UK, and the lucky Chinese Year of the Pig, but it is also the 21st anniversary of the wonderful Glasgow International Jazz Festival, for which I have the great fortune to have been given the role of Guest Programme Director - wow! I'm delighted and proud to be associated with a jazz festival of this stature and look forward to being part of the creative team that has assembled some really amazing programmes during its long history. I'm determined to help make this one of the best UK jazz festivals of the year!
Dennis Rollins

Glasgow International Jazz Festival runs Friday 22 June to Sunday 1 July 2007

Dennis Rollins is an acclaimed musician, composer and educator, well-known on the British and international jazz scene, and celebrated for his versatility and unique approach to the underrated trombone, to which he brings a unique and exciting approach. His mighty sound can be heard to full effect in his award winning band Badbone & Co’s repertoire of groove-based, funky dance music with jazz overtones. Badbone & Co won the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best Band last year, and Dennis picked up the Marston’s Pedigree British Jazz Award for Best Trombonist; he was also nominated in the Best Jazz Act category at the Urban Music Awards 2006.

Born in 1964 in the Midlands to Jamaican parents, and raised in South Yorkshire, Dennis cut his teeth at the age of 14 studying and performing with The Doncaster Youth Jazz Association. After years of study, Dennis moved to London and began playing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) and the legendary all-black jazz big band The Jazz Warriors. Over the years, Dennis, now based in Doncaster, has established a reputation as an artist of excellence and has lent his unique and stylish talents to some of this country's, and indeed the world's, top jazz and pop personalities such as Courtney Pine, Baba Maal, Jamiroquai, US3, Brand New Heavies and Blur. Dennis is an Ambassador for the National Foundation for Youth Music’s Endangered Species programme, set up to boost youth interest in instruments such as the trombone, French horn, double bass, tuba and oboe, and is also on the Board of Advisors of the British Trombone Society.

In addition to being Guest Programme Director for the Glasgow International Jazz, Dennis is also Artist in Residence at the ever-popular Marsden Jazz Festival in October.

Dennis Rollins' Badbone & Co has released three critically acclaimed albums: Badbone , Make Your Move, and last year’s Big Night Out! which is classic Dennis Rollins, with extra funk.

James Taylor’s 4th Dimension

Hammond funk guru’s new outfit

James Taylor’s 4th Dimension
releases its debut album
Picking Up Where We Left Off
on
Monday 14 May 2007
(Real Self Records; RS5346)

More than enough Hammond organised power to grab the attention of the most indifferent audience; they pack a genuinely solid punch
Jack Massarik, Evening Standard

James Taylor is best known as leader of the James Taylor Quartet (JTQ), where his trademark funky Hammond vibe is featured to fine effect. JTQ’s fired-up signature tune, The Theme from Starsky and Hutch, cemented the band’s reputation as masters of the jazz-funk-r’n’b workout; 60s spy themes, psychedelic and free-form jazz all added something to the band’s distinctive sound. Describing his new outfit, James Taylor’s 4th Dimension, the Rochester-based Hammond guru – affectionately known as ‘the Medway Monarch’ - says: ‘This project is something I’ve been promising myself for a long while. It’s an opportunity to return to, and further explore, the endless possibilities offered by the classic Hammond quartet format, but this time with 20 years of recording, writing, and performing experience behind us’. All 12 album tracks on Picking Up Where We Left Off are written by James, and the line-up is as follows: James Taylor - Hammond C3 organ; Nigel Price – guitar; Andy McKinney – bass; Neil Robinson – drums.

Originally playing the Hammond B3 organ in the UK mod revival band The Prisoners, James Taylor formed his own quartet in 1985, and began playing music similar to the rare-groove jazz-funk then in vogue around London. By the early 90s, that movement had spawned acid jazz, and JTQ found itself at the forefront of a vibrant young club scene. The first single, Blow-Up - a funked-up version of Herbie Hancock's theme from the seminal 60s film of the same name - was released in 1985 on the Re Elect The President label, a precursor to Acid Jazz. The band's debut album, Mission Impossible, was released the following year, predominantly consisting of covers of 60s film themes such as Alfie, Mrs. Robinson and Goldfinger. In the early 1990s, the single Love The Life reached the Top 40 and the accompanying album, Supernatural Feeling, settled in the Top 30 UK charts. After releases on Polydor and Big Life Records, JTQ returned to Acid Jazz, and In The Hand of The Inevitable remains the label's biggest selling album to date. The latest JTQ album, A Taste of Cherry, was released in September last year.

In 1997 James had the chance to fulfil a dream when he was asked to score the theme tune to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, the spy spoof starring Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley. JTQ’s Whole Lotta Live album was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998, and the following year James featured on Tom Jones’ duets album, Reload. James’ musical talent has been admired by numerous other acts: The Wonderstuff, Manic Street Preachers, The Pogues and U2 have all featured James and his distinctive Hammond sound on their albums.

We are delighted to be able to confirm MELI'SA MORGAN as the main live act for the 'Modern Soul' room @ the SOLD OUT - PRESTATYN WEEKENDER on the Friday evening.
Meli'sa has made some stunning tunes over the years starting with HIGH FASHION ('Feelin' Lucky Lately') in the early eighties, three further solo albums for Capitol during the next ten years or so - that gave us classic songs such as 'Fools Paradise', 'Do Me Baby' & 'Heart Breaking Decision'. Moving onto Elektra in the mid nineties 'Still In Love' saw her hook up with MAW and then more recently with Blaze on the fantastic 'Don't Say Love' with soul and house mixes included. This year has seen her sign to the reactivated Orpheus / Hush productions camp for a dynamic return with tracks like 'Do You, Do You Want It', 'There'll Never Be' and a great version of 'Back Together Again' with Freddie Jackson.
Meli'sa will be performing songs spanning her 25 year recording career and is still at the top of her game on the live circuit in the US - as a recent live show in New York with The Dells & Howard Hewitt is testament to.
All the way from Baltimore MARC EVANS (of Ron Hall & The Muthafunkaz) will also be performing LIVE cut's like 'I Don't Want U Anymore (Teddy Pendergrass), 'The Way You Love Me' etc etc exclusively on the SUNDAY AFTERNOON SHOWCASE, so make sure you book Monday off work, so not to miss that !!
This guy is fantastic live and 'The Way........' has probably been THE biggest record on 'Modern Soul' dancefloors in ORIGINAL / DIMITRI FROM PARIS and TOM MOULTON remixes over the past year to eighteen months. Lookout for his new album coming on Defected Records in the Autumn.
Details for the weekend are as below -

Adriana Evans is back with new album

Adriana Evans, the singer/songwriter credited for releasing the first ever so called ‘Nu Soul record’, is back with a new solo album “El Camino”.

Inspired by her recent travels, particularly by her time spent living in Brazil, the stunning new collection captures a joyful, summery, Latin vibe and shows great maturity in song writing and arranging.

Produced by long time collaborator and husband Dred Scott, the musical emphasis of this work is based more on the soul tradition, yet it still holds the eclectic elements that reflect Adriana's unique perspective.

The title "El Camino" means the road or path in Spanish. The CD is about Adriana's overall journey, starting from the beginning of her career to the present. El Camino is a path that brings Adriana back to the source and beyond.

The record is being released on 12th March by Expansion Records.

Since beginning their career together four decades ago, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson have become one of the most prolific, versatile and exciting musical couples in recording history. They have collected 22 gold and platinum records and more than 50 ASCAP awards.

They met in 1964 at the White Rock Baptist Church in New York City. Nick Ashford had come to New York from Detroit to pursue a career in theatre as a dancer. Valerie Simpson, a piano student since age 5, was playing and singing with the church's legendary choir. Nick joined the choir and the two began writing pop songs for fun. Word of the talented duo spread quickly and soon Ashford & Simpson sold their batch of songs for $64.00. A career was born.

In 1966, Ray Charles scored a hit with their "Let's Go Get Stoned," and soon after the duo signed to Motown as staff writers and producers. Some of the magnificent songs they penned include Gaye/Terrell duets "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By." Ashford and Simpson also penned Diana Ross' "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)," the Miracles' "Who's Gonna Take the Blame," the Marvelettes' "Destination: Anywhere" and Rita Wright's "I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You."

In 1971, Nick Ashford also produced Simpson's solo debut "Exposed." In 1973 the couple recorded the duets collection "Keep It Comin'." A move to Warner Bros. preceded 1973's "Gimme Something Real."

Ashford and Simpson were married in 1974 and remain one of soul's quintessential partnerships.

The title track from 1977's "So, So Satisfied," was a Top 40 R&B hit, and in 1979 they cracked the pop Top 40 with "Found a Cure." That same year, Chaka Khan recorded their "I'm Every Woman." This song was later covered by Whitney Houston for the soundtrack to her film "The Bodyguard," reaching the Top Five in 1993.

Ashford and Simpson scored one of their biggest hits as performers with their 1985 R&B chart-topper "Solid." This became their signature song and speaks well for their musical and personal relationship. According to the The London Guardian: "It's one thing to write a love song, but it's quite another trick to convince an audience you inhabit one."

Highlights of the career of Ashford & Simpson include --

  • Live Aid performance of "Reach Out and Touch" with Teddy Pendergrass in 1985
  • Performance at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday celebration in London in 1988.
  • Singing for President Clinton at the 52nd Presidential Inauguration in 1992.
  • Performance at the White House for the CISAC 39th World Congress.
  • April of 1996 they were awarded ASCAP's highest honor: The Founder's Award, presented at the Motown Cafe in New York.

Notable songs include --

  • It Seems to Hang On
  • Street Corner
  • Solid
  • Don't Cost You Nothing
  • Is It Still Good to Ya?
  • I'll Be There for You
  • Found a Cure
  • By Way of Love's Express
  • High-Rise
  • Send It
  • One More Try

This new single features a track called "No Love Child" which was written by Leeds based GLP artists Cara Robinson and Wayne Pollock.

The song "No Love Child" is one of the tracks on Irish born singer / songwriter Cara Robinson's stunning debut album "Keep'er Lit" which was released by Indie label GLP last November.

Cara Robinson has previously written and recorded with many notable artists including David Holmes, LTJ Bukem and Corinne Bailey Rae. ( Cara sang backing vocals on "Put Your Records on"). Life and Soul Feb Update

Life and Soul Feb Update www.lifeandsoulpromotions.co.uk

Hey, well its been a while since my last newsletter, so quite a bit to say.

Radio

I have now formalised two ‘residences’ as follows:-

I will be appearing as a regular guest/ contributor on the following two shows-

1) The Juice on Solar Radio, last Monday of the month, This show focuses on new indie soul music and has a bunch of contributors from around the world and I am pleased to join the team. This actually started last Monday – February’s line up is this:-

12 Feb Dan CE Nyc Baby unified Tribe

19 Feb Eric Roberson Aneel Robinson

26 Feb Sean Sax Tdot Mike Ashley

The slots are timed for 11.00pm in the uk and 11.30 uk 6pm EST and 6.30 EST

On my first show I featured Chris Chandler and Jarrard Anthony, both extremely different but neither falling into the right boxes, in my view, for the UK Soul Scene and I felt they were worthy of some attention. Also the brand new album from Elaine Stepter which is receiving plaudits all around right now.

Next up who knows but by all means mail me with ideas mike@lifeandsoulpromotions.co.uk

2) Soul Train on Star FM 107.2FM in the Bristol region. Sadly this is not available on the internet but it is hoped to be syndicated to other ‘Star’s in due course. I am on a five week rotation with funkmeisters Al Bendall, Jerry Lott, Johnny Stallard and Steve Ashby. I have appeared on this show previously including a live interview with Martine Girault and a Soul Fusion feature special.

This show is based around the successful Soul train operation in Bristol with a particular focus on 70’s, 80’s soul, jazz and funk but also includes the whole of soul and a slow jam section

My next show with Ricky 2Tuff in the chair on March 4 - 7 to 11

Just for info I am taking a short break from Djing - apart from one gig that I haven’t cancelled more later – just taking the opportunity to get out amongst it and enjoy. Will be back later in the year no doubt. I am also still part of the team putting together Room 3 at Soul Fusion, more of this later.

2nd Annual Indie Soul Cocktail Party

VESTA DISTANT LOVER (Shanachie, Jan 30th)

Vesta Pays Homage to Her Musical Heroes on Shanachie Debut Distant Lover - Vocalist Reinvents Timeless R&B Songs Sung By Marvin Gaye, The Spinners, Smokey Robinson, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Deniece Williams & Other R&B Icons

Webster's Dictionary defines the word 'classic' as 'being of the highest, rank or class' or 'serving as an outstanding representation of a kind.' Vesta's new CD Distant Lover exemplifies the word 'classic' on a number of levels. Not only is her Shanachie debut a sampling of some of the greatest R&B 'classics' but it is a sublime example of how a singer can rework a song when they posses an innate ability to personalize and take chances with a composition. Distant Lover is a refreshing exploration of R&B gems that reveal Vesta's personal connection to each song. Her intensely rich, earthy and soulful voice combined with her intelligent, thoughtful and often playful phrasing drive home the lyrics of any song she sings. The upbeat and charming singer shares, "I don't think people will expect to hear me sing all the different styles featured on Distant Lover. I hope to shock people when they learn that these are not only songs that I love but also ones that I can actually sing and capture the essence of all the incredible artists who sang them."

Distant Lover is a thrilling glimpse into the singer's personality and creative genius as a song stylist. Her renditions of Baby Face's "Whip Appeal" and Sly Stone's anthem "If You Want Me To Stay," show off her playful and comedic side. Vesta states, "I had a lot of fun with Sly's song and got to show off my more stank funky side!" Vesta equally enjoyed recording the Bill Withers hit "Use Me," a song she frequently performs in concert. "This song has a lot to do with some of the experiences I have had," says Vesta. "I have run into a lot of severe vultures in the business and in relationships." Vesta also calls upon songs from her youth on Distant Lover, like the Spinners staple "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" and the title track, which was a hit for Marvin Gaye. Vesta recalls "In my youth, I remember sitting in my living room and listening to 'Distant Lover' over and over again. Growing up it was one of my favorite songs. I guess I was lonely and the song just spoke to me."

Other highlights on Distant Lover include "Ooh Baby Baby," popularized by Smokey Robinson who Vesta calls "the coolest of the cool." The ballad is the perfect vehicle for Vesta to display her range of emotion as she delivers a stunning performance. The singer explains, "If you do not really pay attention to the words of this song, it can sound happier than it is. I tried to get to the real pain of the lyrics and convey what I felt Smokey was trying to say." Vesta also took great joy in recording Steve Wonder's "Knock Me Off My Feet." She confesses, "Stevie's songs are deceptively difficult. His genius is such that his songs sound easier to sing then they are. 'Knock Me Off My Feet' is so beautifully romantic and I am a romantic!"

While most of the tracks on Distant Lover are classics recorded by men, Vesta highlights three songs sung by women for whom she holds deep admiration: Deniece Williams, Sade and Syreeta Wright. Vesta remakes Deniece Williams' smash hit "Free" and says "Deniece Williams is an amazing vocalist and person. She happens to be someone who is as sweet as she sounds!" Sade's "No Ordinary Love" is a song that Vesta fell in love with the first time she heard it. She shares, "There is a wonderful mood to Sade's writing. She stands alone in her genre." Vesta and singer Issac Clemon, perform a memorable version of "Born Again," which was sung by Syreeta and the late Billy Preston. The singer confides, "I had the pleasure of spending time with Syreeta at her home and she was such wonderful person. When the idea of a duet came up, I knew 'Born Again' was the right song. With the passing of Billy Preston, it was heavy on my heart. He was a sweetheart and a killer piano player and you could almost forget how well he sang until you heard him singing. I called upon Syreeta in my minds eye when we were recording this song. Hopefully she came and visited. Maybe that beautiful smile from heaven blessed us with her essence."

As much as Vesta enjoyed recording the repertoire on Distant Lover, she equally enjoyed collaborating with the personnel on the CD which includes saxophonists Kim Waters and Marty Q, guitarists Derrick "HotSauce" Cummings, Randy Bowland, Rhon Lawrence and Wayne Bruce. Producer Chris "Big Dog" Davis, who Vesta affectionately refers to as "Muscle," plays all the additional instruments heard on the CD. "Recording this music with 'Muscle' was just magical," says Vesta. "Creative energies are powerful and sometime stubborn but this was such a beautiful experience."

Born in Coshocton, Ohio (outside of Columbus) Vesta Williams moved to Los Angeles as a child. Music, the arts and media have always been a part of the singers life. Her father, Hugh Williams, was one of the first African American

TV anchormen in the country, while her grandmother, Vivian Williams, was a visual artist whose work has been exhibited at museums throughout the country. As a child, Vesta formed a singing group with her three sisters. "It was more like a hostage situation," laughs the vocalist whose grandmother said she began singing as soon as she could talk. "I planned it so I could get them to sing with me." Although music was a part of Vesta's daily life, she was twelve when she knew it was her destiny. She shares, "My cousins had a band called Flash out of Dayton, OH and they invited me to sing with them because I bugged the hell out of them telling them I was a singer. So they were playing this festival and handed me the microphone and when I began singing they never took it back! For me that was the beginning. I knew that singing was all I was going to do…that this was my thing, my passion and who I was."

Vesta has had the privilege of collaborating with such diverse artists as Anita Baker ("Rapture"), Jermaine Jackson ("Precious Moments"), Jeffrey Osborne ("Emotional"), Stephanie Mills ("If I Were Your Woman"), Gladys Knight ("Good Woman"), Najee ("I'll Be Good To You") and Sting ("Nothing Like The Sun") among many others. She also toured as the lead vocalist with the Crusaders and as a backup singer with Chaka Khan. In addition to using her voice as a singer, Vesta has worked extensively as a voice-over artist doing jingles in commercials for such notable products as McDonald's, Diet Coke, Honda and Revlon Cosmetics.

In 1986, Vesta signed with A&M Records and released her self-titled debut which spawned the popular singles "Once Bitten Twice Shy' (which reached #9 on the R&B charts), "Don't Blow A Good Thing" and "Something About You." The same year her version of "'Suddenly It's Magic" appeared on the soundtrack for the film Soul Man. In 1988 she released the gold selling CD Vesta 4 U that included the top five singles "Sweet, Sweet Love" and "Congratulations." The same year, Vesta contributed to the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning movie Mississippi Burning starring Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe. She sang a riveting Mahalia Jackson-like performance of the song "Try Jesus." In 1991 Vesta released Special, which included the dance track "Do Ya", and the title track, which peaked at #2 on Billboard's R&B Singles Chart. In 1993 she released Everything-n-More, which featured several producers including Brian McKnight and Chuckii Booker. The album featured Vesta's song "Tell Me." Around this time Vesta made her acting debut in the major motion picture Posse directed by Mario Van Peebles. She portrayed the Mae West-like saloon singer, Vera, in the film. Her songs "Tell Me" and Ride of Your Life" were highlighted in the film's soundtrack. To add to Vesta's credits, she has also appeared on the TV sitcom Sister Sister, playing the reoccurring role of "Monica."

The vocalist parted ways with A&M after Everything-n-More and kept busy working alongside such artists as Gerald Albright, George Duke, Howard Hewett and Christian McBride. In the mid-90s, she signed with MCA and recorded an abum that was never released. Following a 1997 tour with Fourplay, guitarist Lee Ritenour invited Vesta to join his new imprint, I.E., at Polygram, where she released the recording Relationships. In 2005 producers Duke Jones & Norman Connors invited Vesta to contribute as a featured vocalist on their The Café Soul All-Stars CD, which joined Vesta with Peabo Bryson, George Benson, Glenn Jones, Christopher Williams, Roy Ayers, Kenny Garrett, and others.

With the release of Distant Lover, Vesta is sure to delight and surprise old fans and garner new ones with her refreshing takes on timeless classics. Vesta concludes, "I hope that my love for this music and the musicians and composers who wrote and sang them comes through."

Chocolate Soul III

For Immediate Release -February 6, 2007

Known for introducing superstars like Grammy award winner India Arie, Kindred, and Julie Dexter, Chocolate Soul announces the release of Volume III of its highly acclaimed compilation series to be released April 21st, 2007. Distributed internationally via Kajmere Sound Distribution.

Best described as an intricate fusion of Soul, Alternative Rock, Hip-Hop and Dance, Chocolate Soul pays homage to the artistry of music with fresh vocals, melodic beats and soulful vibes. For the true music enthusiast its more than a movement, Chocolate Soul is an odyssey to musical paradise.

"This compilation is another step in our pursuit of perfection in musical offerings. As it is our third, it commemorates all that we have learned in presenting music that portrays the celebration of true songs, lyrics, musicianship, creativity and passion in every note," says Will G founder of Chocolate Soul

This third installment features Abstract Mindstate featuring Kanye West, Kindred the Family Soul, Jurassic 5, Crossrhodes featuring Sy Smith & Raheem Devaughn just to name a few.

Although known to introduce new music, Chocolate Soul’s Volume III reaches back for nostalgic interludes with songs like the soulful rendition of Level 42’s 1985 classic hit “Something About You”. Carefully soothing is the vibe of tracks like “Sinkin” and “Sunshine” while more up-tempo tracks like “3 Sides” and “Stay As You Are” invites the listener to bob their head and groove. Volume III also features three hidden tracks, “Welcome to Chicago” by Abstract Mindstate featuring Kanye West, It Is What it Is by Red Elk and “Future Sound (Tariq L Remix)” by Jurassic 5.

"It is truly an honor to work with a company and compilation series with such history and quality", says Tariq L. The first Chocolate Soul compilation was released in 2000 and featured original compositions by Seek, Kindred, Julie Dexter, D-Influence and Satoshie Tomeii. In 2002, Chocolate Soul Recordings released the second of the compilation that included original compositions from Raheem DeVaughn, The Rurals, Medusa, and Fertile Ground.

Fatin Dantzler of Kindred The Family Soul says, "This is easily the best soul compilation put out in the past ten years or so".

Chocolate Soul Recordings was founded in 2000 to harness and develop budding musical talent and creativity. Chocolate Soul launched the compilation series with Volume I in 2000 and two years later in 2002 Volume II was released. In 2005, Chocolate Soul Recordings, in association with BornSoulful Entertainment released the "Above The Water" LP/CD. Chocolate Soul Entertainment was founded in 1994 as a multi-genre concert production company. As the main concert property “The Chocolate Soul MusicFest” eventually became synonymous with great musical performances in Atlanta, the production vision grew to include a tour property that has visited almost every major city in America.

Sparlha Swa

Introducing Sparlha Swa!!!
Soul/World/Rock Music

Solo on guitar, Sparlha is a velvetine clash of impeccable vocals and haunting modal chords. With her band comes a maddeningly satisfying concoction of solid Latin-tinged bass lines, intelligent and inventive beats, and a wildly roving jazz- rooted piano. Hers is a sound that ascends to Sade-like smoothness but with rougher rock edges, catchy hooks, and an international feel. Stunning, tender, contagious and wise, her songs speak about love, life and actualizing the true potential of the human spirit. She is a sure promise of wonder for music listeners of any genre.

Her recent musical exploits include securing a Japanese distribution deal for her debut album “In The Distance”, licensing 2 songs (Love Addiction and Too Late) to the nationally syndicated TV show “Girlfriends”, and having her music video chosen for airing on BETJ’s Soul Sessions 3 times a day since April 21st. She has also been selected twice to perform at the NXNE Music Festival in Toronto, Canada, and also at the Atlantis Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. In January she opened for Bilal at London’s premier venue for international music, the Jazz Café, 3 nights in a row. In May her band was chosen to perform at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Café in collaboration with Sista Factory. She is also part “the International Gibson family” of guitars and music.

Read the full bio...

"Doing My Thing", Sparlha Swa's debut music video, is a fierce call to unflagging pursuit of one's life purpose. The video has been airing 3x a day on BETJ's "Soul Sessions" a show featuring Alternative, Neo-Soul, and Jazz music. It was directed by Taagen Swao and Jon Fine of Freed Pictures, with help from Mike Schiller, and is set on the F Train to Coney Island.

Tim Dillinger Newsletter - Black History Month & More!

Hello friends...

It's February 7th as I sit and write this. It is still pretty cold outside...and we had our first little bit of snow over the weekend (let me emphasis...a little bit..., but it was still good to see it!).

As I've been entrenched in creating February's editions of "Out the Box" in honor of Black History Month, I took a break from editing last night and had the opportunity to hear Afeni Shakur at Vanderbilt University. Her speech was filled with such a loving intensity. She spoke of staying conscious...not letting our brains get lazy...and I was absolutely riveted. She's doing wonderful things through Amaru Entertainment and it was so exciting to see her involvement in the global community.

In creating February's shows, I wanted to spotlight artists, both living and deceased, who have accomplished much, but don't always get the attention that they are truly due. So, I am thrilled to present a two-hour tribute to the late Sylvester this Sunday. My guests on the show are Joshua Gamson (author of The Fabulous Sylvester), Sarah Dash, Daryl Coley, Rudy Calvo, Eric Robinson and music critic Ron Wynn. The show will air on www.jazzsyndicate.co.uk at 8 AM and 6 PM (CST). I will also be hosting live chat at www.timdillinger.com/forum during both airings. I am extremely proud of the show and so excited to be able to talk about the accomplishments and play the music of this groundbreaking artist. The last two shows of the month will feature legendary soul artist Candi Staton and the incomprable Jimmy Scott.

I'm excited to share that "That's What I Feel" (from The Muse) continued to rise on the charts on 4dasoul.com and Rhythmflow.net. I truly appreciate the play from ALL of the stations that have been so supportive of this work. Another thanks to all of YOU who continue to spread the word to your friends. The Muse is now available on www.dustygroove.com in addition to www.cdbaby.com/timdillinger, www.amazon.com, www.timdillinger.com and iTUNES. For those in London, be sure to visit Reggae John at CD City! If you already own it, please go by www.amazon.com and/or CDBaby.com/timdillinger and post your reviews!

So...go by the forum at www.timdillinger.com, register and I'll see you on Sunday!!!!

Empirical

Empirical
represents the BBC in the forthcoming EBU/European Jazz Competition

Empirical is the most exciting jazz band to come out of the UK

Courtney Pine

The EBU/European Jazz Competition aims to encourage, promote and make known young musicians in jazz ensembles through recording sessions, broadcasts by Member organizations of the European Broadcasting Union and by providing them with the possibility of performing on stage at concerts as part of internationally renowned festivals.

The EBU/European Jazz Competition takes place every two years, based on recordings made during the two years preceding the Competition. The 2007 Competition is organised by two parties: the EBU and the Dutch Foundation for the European Jazz Competition (EJC Foundation) in cooperation with the North Sea Jazz Festival.

In 2007, the Competition will be organized in two parts: the first will consist of the listening to recordings by an EBU jury and the designation of four prize-winners of the semi-finals. The second will consist of five concerts given by the four prize-winners of the semi-finals of the EBU/European Jazz Competition and the winner of the Dutch Jazz Competition, as part of the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam (Netherlands) - taking place between 13 and 15 July 2007 - where a jury will designate the prize-winning jazz ensemble for the Grand Prix of the EBU/European Jazz Competition.

Each EBU Radio Member organisation may present young jazz musicians as candidates, with up to two ensembles per radio organization. There is no restriction on the size of the ensemble presented (from one musician to a big band) nor on the type of instruments, acoustic or electronic, including vocals, making up the ensemble. The age of any musician shall not exceed 30 years on 31 December 2006 (born after 31 December 1975).

Empirical is made up of five jazz stars of the future – four of them former Tomorrow’s Warriors (the organisation founded in 1992 by double bassist Gary Crosby to nurture and develop talented young jazz musicians) graduates. Jay Phelps (trumpet), Nathaniel Facey (alto sax), Kit Downes (piano), Neil Charles (double bass), and Shane Forbes (drums) perform with astonishing musical maturity, confidence and a cohesiveness derived from many years of playing together. Empirical is dedicated to maintaining the roots of traditional modern jazz but has a definite finger on the pulse of the contemporary world.

Courtney Pine is currently recording/producing Empirical’s eponymously titled debut album for his Destin-E label, due for release in the Spring.

Satoshi Tomiie - The Masters Series Part 9 on Renaissance

    SATOSHI TOMIIE

    ‘The Masters Series Part 9’

    RELEASE DATE: 12TH MARCH

‘Satoshi Tomiie returns to Renaissance, fresh from the success of launching the 3D series to deliver a genre-bending addition to the prestigious Masters series.’

Satoshi Tomiie is an artist who needs little introduction. From his first explosion onto the scene in the late eighties with the famed Frankie Knuckles collaboration, ‘Tears’, through to more recent work on his own esteemed SAW label, he has expertly walked the line, marrying deeper, more atmospheric sounds with his soulful roots.

The ‘Masters Series’ is undoubtedly further testament to this rare ability. Over the 2 discs Satoshi weaves a twisted, magical path that blends house favourites such as King Britt, DJ Yellow and D’Julz alongside exciting, new-found contemporary stars such as Shlomi, Aber, Radioslave, Guy Gerber and Jim Rivers. And, just to show he’s still one of the busiest men in dance, plus prove a Satoshi compilation really isn’t complete without an original production, he crops up under his Opus Ink guise, a co-production with the fast-rising Audiofly.

On the subject of the mix and his approach to the project we’re only too happy to leave the final word with the man himself, “I really wanted to create an accurate portrayal of my club sets, but, further to this impression, I felt it important the segue throughout each disc worked, almost as if they were two seventy-minute songs in their own right.”
