Soul Fusion News

Hi there, Just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know about a few developments regarding SOULFUSION. There's lot going on in the background but for now I'd like to let you know a few things
I am very pleased to announce that with immediate effect HIPPO will be joining me as resident DJ in the Northern Soul room, Needless to say Hippo is very pleased about his appointment, and is looking forward to getting the Joint jumping on May 19th. This is great news for Soulfusion. Fans of the Hipster will no doubt be happy at his inclusion in the team.
I have also asked ADY POUNTAIN & STEVE LLOYD to join me as resident DJs in the Modern Soul Lounge. This will bring continuity to the event allowing the DJs to play lesser known tracks and to build up a list of regular sounds that will become SOULFUSION Anthems.
This is all good for the future of SOULFUSION and for the Gloucestershire Soul scene in general.
Room 3 continues under the banner of "Soulfreedom" with KEV BAYNHAM, MIKE ASHLEY & MIKE SHAWE playing Soulful Dance in their own Styles.
Last time this room really came into it's own, and I am very pleased with the reaction it had with the Soulfusion faithful.
MAY19th is our next event which is only event number 7. I am pleased to say that the membership is increasing on a daily basis with the website having plenty of hits. Membership nearing 1100 members. thanks for your support.
HIPPO is headlinging in the Northern room assisted by MIKE VENN & all the usual reprobates (myself included).
The Modern Soul lounge will see a very special guest DJ Crazybeat's GARY DENNIS playing a 2 hour set for the SOULFUSION Crowd.
Gary is travelling a long way to be with us so let's show him just how the Soulfusion crowd know how to party.
I hope you will make the effort for this very special night. please remember if you want membership for friends then get in touch at least 48 hours before the 19th of May.
Untill then have a soulful few weeks
regards
Neil Self

UPDATED CONFIRMED SOUL-PATROL AWARD WINNERS: Jazz Trumpeter Ginetta's Vendetta

As many of you are already aware, for the 2007 Soul-Patrol Convention this year we are partnering with the Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival and the Convention will be at Clark Park (map) and The Enterprise Center in Philadelphia from May 24 - May 27th. We are expecting 10,000 - 15,000 (or more) to attend the combined Soul-Patrol Convention & Black Heritage Festival. We have partnered with Black Heritage Festival because our objectives for the Soul-Patrol Convention and the Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival are 100 percent in lockstep with each other.

The entire convention/festival will be FREE with the exception of the Black Music Cabaret, thanks to the generosity of our 2007 sponsors.

THE OBJECTIVE:

To help facilitate the extension of OUR CULTURE into the future...

Click here to view the detailed agenda

We have formed this partnership because both organizations feel that we need to be more proactive helping to facilitate the expansion of authentic Black culture into the future. We feel that our children are currently being hoodwinked by the mass media and we want to provide positive activities to counteract the posion they are being fed about what Black culture is. We think this is a good way to help insure that Black culture actually has a future, that is derived from it's past.

So if you are coming out, please do bring your children. There will be a host of activities such as Creativity Over Crime Workshops, Black Hist. Village & Workshops, Double Dutch Contest, African Storytellers, Native Dance Contest, African Drum Circle, Sidewalk Chalk Festival there beyond the music that specificly are desinged for children. And we want to get to the children "by any means nessecary", via music or other activities.

We think that by directly exposing these younger people to "Great Black Music From The Ancient To The Future", in all of it's forms it will do much more than we ever could here on the internet to extend the music and the culture. And our sponsors concur.

Here is what we have on tap for this 3 day event:

- Black Music Film Festival (@ Enterprise Center former studios of the American Bandstand TV show)
- Black Music Awards Ceremony/Concert (@ Clark Park)
- Black Music Cabaret (@ Enterprise Center former studios of the American Bandstand TV show)
- Black Music/Culture Panel Discussions (@ Clark Park)
- Black Music Trade Show (@ Clark Park)
So far we have over 25 artists confirmed as attending and include some of the biggest names in the history of Black music as well as some of the most important artists on today's progressive/independent music scene, so we will have many unforgettable & one of a kind live performances.

We also will have many authors, film makers, broadcasters and activists participating in various events at the convention. We are expecting over 15,000 to descend on Philadelphia from around the world to attend the combined Black Heritage Festival/Soul-Patrol Convention this year.

Hotel rooms are being booked quickly. If you are coming we have a block of rooms at the Philadelphia Airport Hilton for $108/night. Street address is 4509 Island Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19153, (215) 365-4150. You may be able to do better on your own, but that's what we have.

Outdoor events are scheduled for historic Clark Park and indoor events (Cabaret & Film Festival) are scheduled for nearby The Enterprise Center (the former studios of the American Bandstand TV show).

Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival & the Soul-Patrol Convention, May 24th thru May 27th, 2007 at Historic CLARK PARK: Black Music Film Festival, Trade Show, Seminars, Awards, Cabaret

Gordon Chambers - June 12th at London's Jazz Cafe

Award-winning New York songwriter-artist Gordon Chambers decided to begin recording as a vocalist himself after a decade of writing hits for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Brownstone, Patti Labelle, Angie Stone and the Isley Brothers.

His new album is unashamedly a collection of love stories "in the tradition of classic soul music of the Seventies but with a current feel". Highlights include "To Love Again" with San Francisco soul star Ledisi, his own version of "If You Love Me", the stand- out ballad "If It Wasn't For Your Love" (previously recorded by US star Heather Headley, and much performed at weddings and anniversaries), and "Stay Together", co-written by Eric Benet and originally recorded by the Temptations.

You can catch Gordon at London's Jazz Cafe on June 12th. Contact the venue and usual ticket outlets for further details.

Erro part of the Stevie Wonder Birthday Tribute shows at Jazz Cafe

Eric is back in May (11/12/13) at London's Jazz Cafe and will be one of the performers at the annual Stevie Wonder Birthday Tribute shows. Also on the bill will be Frank McComb, Roachford and Noel McKoy. Please contact the venue for ticket details, but be warned that previous shows have sold-out so get your tickets early!

:: Joe Driscoll performing live for **Lake Of Stars** in aid of unicef @ Fabric Thursday 3rd May ::

*** Lake of Stars @ Fabric – Thursday 3rd May – London ***

*** In aid of UNICEF ***

After months of complex planning, almost akin to the festival itself, the date is set and the lineup taking shape for a jaw-dropping gig at London’s best club as Lake of Stars guests at Fabric for a unique night of DJs and live music raising money for UNICEF.

Recruiting some of the DJs who have played during the last few years in Malawi or will in 2007, the event hopes to raise crucial funding for the festival and further elevate the awareness of the its aims and ambitions.

It’s already a stellar lineup, headlined by a DJ set from Basement Jaxx! Radio One’s Annie Mac and Rob da Bank have also confirmed along with support from some great performers including Four Tet, The Wombats – Live, Joe Driscoll – Live, Black Cherry – Live and a DJ Marathon in Room Three led by clubs from all over the UK including Mulletover, Chibuku, Chew the Fat!, Universal Grooves, Afrogroove, Horse Meat Disco, Bodytonic, Wax:On and Dirty Disco.

Will Jameson, the festival’s organiser, says that:

“It’s taken ages to plan and put together but I feel this event is going to be really special. All the DJs have been so good, they are coming together for this one-off London gig to really give the Lake of Stars Festival a huge boost. It’s incredibly exciting to be at Fabric with these guys playing! Plus there will be lots of support from the other nights who have helped out along the way and who are playing out in Malawi.”

This promises to be a fantastic showcase of what the festival is about with some simply incredible special guests and a brace of UK DJ and live talent!

Lake of Stars 2007

Combining Western artists with acts from all over Southern Africa the fourth Lake of Stars Festival takes place in October this year. Head out to Malawi, deep in the middle of Africa, for a music event like no other. Since 2004 the unique festival has slowly been growing on the shores of Lake Malawi. The Lake of Stars Festival is a three day charity event that has featured Felix B (Basement Jaxx), Groove Armada’s Andy Cato, Mikey General (Bugz in the Attic), DJ Yoda, Tikhu Vibrations and the Black Missionaries (ten piece reggae group).

The festival was borne from a desire to raise money for a developing economy and help promote Malawi as a tourist destination. Set on the shimmering, palm-fringed shores of Lake Malawi at Chintheche Inn, for three days Western and Malawian artists gather for a musical, social and cultural exchange which is unlike anything you will ever see or hear. This year’s guests include Radio 1’s fantastic Annie Mac as well as rising stars The Wombats and Malawi’s biggest African jazz legend Wambali Mkandawire. For many the festival is the focal point of travelling around this beautiful country, forming part of an itinerary spanning what Malawi has to offer. You can travel on an organised group flight or make your own way to Malawi. Whatever you do, make sure you’re there this year to be part of something truly unforgettable!

This year’s festival takes place over the 5th – 7th October 2007, check www.lakeofstars.co.uk

The International Soul Summit 2007

The International Soul Summit 2007 returns to Atlanta

with a new date, the same great vibe, and a new theme

Underground Meets Mainstream: It's Time to Connect.

Conference to be held July 25th-29t at Atlanta's downtown Marriott. Visit Soul Summit online (www.soulsummitonline.com) to register.

Registration is FREE if you book your rooms at the host hotel before

Terry BelloAtlanta, GA - (February 2007) - Once it was announced, it only took 6 weeks for the news to spread over the internet that there was an event in Atlanta, Georgia called "The First Annual Soul Summit," a conference dedicated to the emergence to Soul Music. The International Soul Summit (ISMS) will return in 2007 to The Downtown Marrriott Hotel in Atlanta, GA, July 25th-29th with a new theme, Underground Meets Mainstream: It's Time To Connect."

"Our second summit will be the event of the music world," offers Creator, Founder, and Executive Producer, Terry Bello. "We've selected the theme, Underground Meets Mainstream: It's Time To Connect because it's time to elevate the music to the next level. Like Jazz and hip-hop before us, this music is an underground movement, but it's poised to be the next big thing and we're ready to be the catalyst for that elevation."

The International Soul Music Summit is the largest music conference in the world dedicated to the genre. The goal of the four day summit is to provide mainstream, emerging, and independent soul artists, retailers, executives, and consumers with the connections, information, networking opportunities, and technology which will help them to continue to create timeless music.

Over 500 attendees including well-known artists: Common, Eric Roberson, Trina Broussard, Martin Luther, Rashaan Patterson, Peven Everett, Jaguar Wright, Anthony Davis, Algebra, Heston, and Grammy Award Winner, Gordon Chambers joined conference attendees from the U.S. and overseas as far away as London. "The first event gave us a glimpse of how much of an impact Soul Music has globally. While it's still underground here in the U.S., it's a huge market overseas in places like the U.K., Germany, and Japan which are successful touring markets for soul music acts. With this event, we want to connect with the scene overseas while rebuild the roots for soul music here in the states where it originates."

This year Bello and his dedicated board of directors have invited a lineup of mainstream artists and musicians from other genres to engage in honest, open, and frank conversations about the future of music.

Components of the 2007 International Soul Music Summit include:

  • Acoustic Jam Sessions, Live performances, Concerts
  • Panels (artists, retail, radio, management, performance etc.)
  • Theme Networking Sessions/ISMS network
  • Unsigned Artist showcases
  • The Angel Award

Sponsors on board at press time include Heineken, BET J, Rolling Out, and Music Choice.

Fiona Bloom's birthday jam featuring Anthony David at The Blue Note

I couldn't have asked for a better way to bring in my birthday. 2 years ago I dreamt that Anthony David this amazing underground soul singer from Atlanta who noone really heard of would sing happy birthday to me from the stage during one of his shows. Well- dreams can come true. It happened last night.

I thought I'd do one last bit of promotion before heading over to The Blue Note for 2 sets with Anthony David and Chesney Snow the beatboxer. Talk about hustle. I'm over at some restaurant near Wall Street for Eric Roberson's new album. Listening party put on by OneNutz at 7:30PM with the guestlist in my hand for the 8:00PM show. What was I thinking. People at Eric's joint were saying to me - don't you have a show right now:-) I'm like yes in 30 minutes - hey- you coming over there? Luckily for me Kevin Harewood -Orange Soul Tip Sheet/Edclectic was driving so he gave me a lift. I got to the Blue Note right now time.

Of course some of the Black Rock Coalition winners were at the bar waiting to get in. The place was already pretty much filled 10 minutes before the first set. I started to relax.

So-- was great. The beatboxing opened the show. Love that diversity and variety. It was refreshing to see the combination of beatboxing straight in to Anthony David's set.

Chesney Snow brought out a violinist named Blanca. Electronic violin and she pulled out all the tricks and flashy technique with some Pagannini, Brahms, and Mozart. Now the 8:00PM crowd was a little stiff and reserved. Chesney was used to playing late night at some other spots. Mainly underground hip hop events where the crowd is hype. So this was definitley a challenge but he broke through, got the crowds ears and did his thing. He shouted out my birthday a few times and ended the set with a happy birthday solo violin medley. Wow.

Up next Mr. Kevin Harewood introduced the show bigging up his new tip sheet Orange and the history of this new soul movement and how he came across Anthony David. Then Mr. A.D himself graced the stage with his drummer/percussion player. From there--was just a story unravelling with some great musicianship, deep felt lyrics and his signature raspy voice. At this point THE BLUE NOTE was wall to wall and the audience was head nodding and clapping.

He talked about A.Town and The Red Clay built around him and love gone awry and love lost and regained and family and struggles. He connected through and through with his warmth and love for music and life and the connection was succinct and he won everyone in the room over. He kicked some rhymes. Mentioned The Bloom Effect in a verse and my birthday and the crowd cheered and the acknowledgements of this special day were a plenty. I was really blessed.

So--- the first set finished--- Anthony David gave his encore after a hot reception. They just couldn't get enough. There were lots of photographers in the house and videographers.. Last night was truly a beautiful indie soul and powerfully so indie soul movement continuing to grow.

2nd set--- well- we knew the 10:30PM at THE BLUE NOTE was going to be packed
with musicians/singers, creative types and overall laid back individuals out of their suits and not having to get to work at 8:00am the next day.

This time I am blessed to have Eric Roberson introduce Anthony. Wow.

I rewind for just a minute-- Chesney Snow killed it. His 2nd set was more a true beatboxing set. Less classical style and more in your face beats and acrobatics. The crowd was eating it up and he kicked a birthday song in there also and ended the set calling me to the stage and handing me 1 dozen beautiful TULIPS. My favorite flowers.

Then Anthony David hits the stage for a lengthy hair down, hats off- kick back 2nd amazingly funky groovy second set. The audience was eating out of his palms as he was doing the call and response play like how Mc's do and we was breaking down Crunk and the bounce feel and southern funk style that's so prominent in his music.
He was bigging up his South boys and playing a combination of both The Red Clay Chronicles and Three Chords and The Truth.

In the middle of the set he threw in the word free to walk up if they want to with some improv to Eric Roberson, Gordon Chambers and Maya Azucena kicked it. What a birthday.

I looked around the audience and there were tons of musicians, poets, comics
and actors as well as industry.

The list goes on and on. Was beautiful

Then the cake comes out with the candles-- Anthony makes an announcement from stage and the whole venue is singing me HAPPY BIRTHDAY It is now officially my birthday and there's nothing more I could have asked for.

Thanks for making my dreams come true. Anthony David is a shining star and glad he's in my world of artists I represent.

    Soul'd U Out's Blue Note Review
"...this groovefest had it all and more!"
Last month, Mobetta & Soul'd U Out played for the packed-in crowd at NYC's Blue Note Jazz Club. Jazzreview.com's Veronica Timpanelli reviewed the performance and wrote, "...Maurice Brown's musical vision is not only hip, but it's totally fresh and inspiring with enough momentum to carry jazz into a completely new evolutionary direction..."

"My own feelings about the direction in which jazz should go are that there should be much less stress on technical exhibitionism and much more on emotional content, on what might be termed humanity in music and the freedom to say all that you want." ~ Booker Little

ONUTSS Listening Party Starring Eric Roberson

It is indeed a great honor to work with artists you admire & whose music you've come to love! Eric Roberson, "The Ambassador of the Indie Soul Movement," a fitting title, has opened doors for so many because of his efforts to bless the world with quality music!

When Eric suggested that he be our featured artist, we were in awe and rushed to make it a reality! How often does an opportunity of this magnitude come to light for a duo of sistas who are truly passionate about what they do with a fairly new company?

t would warm our hearts greatly if you joined us for this event. We will be presenting it at a new location that is easily accessible to all public transportation. We will, however continue to work with the phenomenal staff at Vanel's!

Eric's latest cd, "Left" will be on sale for those who have yet to purchase a copy. And for those who have already, please pick up another copy
already, please pick up another copy or two for others who NEED to know exactly where ''the movement' is headed!!

Eric will be in the house to autograph cd's & to spread his infamous charm to all in attendance.

Pam & I are beyond ecstatic because this is 'really' BIG for ONUTSS! We thank those who've supported our efforts along the way and we look forward to building bigger & brighter opportunities for indie soul artists!

    Peace & Abundant Blessings,
    Detrel
