Go See "The Hip Hop Project"
Official info:
From Executive Producers Bruce Willis and Queen Latifah, The Hip Hop Project is the compelling story of Kazi, a formerly homeless teenager who inspires a group of New York City teens to transform their life stories into powerful works of art, using hip hop as vehicle for self-development and personal discovery. In contrast to all the negative attention focused on hip hop, this is a story of hope, healing and the realization of dreams.
the music from the film is available at iTunes:

Arthur Alexander chronicled on Hacktone Records on August 21
ARTHUR ALEXANDER’S REDISCOVERY CHRONICLED ON LONELY JUST LIKE ME, THE FINAL CHAPTER, DUE ON HACKTONE RECORDS, AUGUST 21st
18-song CD contains full critically hailed Nonesuch album plus rare live tracks and hotel demos along with liner notes from original producer Ben Vaughn
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The only songwriter whose songs were covered by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley was Arthur Alexander. One of the greatest soul singers of all time, if not the best known, he penned “Anna,” “Sally Sue Brown” and “You Better Move On” among many others. The Beatles modeled their early sound after him. Yet by 1980 – a young man, just 40 – Alexander had left the music industry and was driving a bus and working at a center for disadvantaged kids in Cleveland. That’s exactly where the story of Lonely Just Like Me: The Final Chapter – a deluxe package chronicling his improbable, triumphant yet tragically short-lived comeback in the early ‘90s – begins.
In one comprehensive 18-track volume, Lonely Just Like Me: The Final Chapter (Hacktone Records, due out 8/21) combines Arthur Alexander’s Ben Vaughn-produced final album for Nonesuch (awarded a rave feature review in Rolling Stone) with previously unreleased material from NPR’s “Fresh Air” in a rare on-air performance, the never-before-heard hotel room demos (including Arthur’s take on Neil Diamond’s “Solitary Man”) and a live version of “Anna” recorded at New York’s Bottom Line. It’s a document of the second half of Alexander’s career. The sound is lovingly restored and remastered as well as re-sequenced to producer Vaughn’s original design. Vaughn’s liner notes provide a intimate and detailed story of the singer’s all-too-brief re-emergence. “If heartbreak had a sound,” he writes, “it was this voice.”
The core of the set is the Nonesuch album Lonely Just Like Me, which won some of the highest accolades of any album released in 1993. The project was instigated by Elektra A&R executive Danny Kahn, who spotted Alexander in a rare performance in 1992 (the live version of “Anna” included on this set is from that very performance). Kahn signed him to Nonesuch, which had launched the American Explorer series. He called upon artist/producer Ben Vaughn to convince Alexander to record. Vaughn boarded a plane to Cleveland and the two formed a fast bond. The contract was signed and the album recorded in Nashville. Sessions featured a number of Alexander’s accompanists from the ‘60s – Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts, Reggie Young, Thomas Cain and Mike Leech – along with Alexander newbies Gary Nicholson, Tommy Spurlock, Ashley Cleveland and Jim Spake. Reaction to the comeback recording was palpable, with positive reaction from the music press and such artists as Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, McCartney, Bob Dylan, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Kris Kristofferson. Alexander told Vaughn, “It looks like those seeds I planted a long time ago were good seeds.”
The album’s warm reception energized Alexander, who obliged his many interview requests, played the South by Southwest music conference and performed on a special live broadcast of NPR’s “Fresh Air.” The excitement culminated with a concert in Nashville. Sadly the show did him in. Alexander was checked into the ER at the city’s Baptist Hospital. Within days he had, as Vaughn notes, passed on to the next life. The album was still a new release with reviews breaking daily. A major comeback and rediscovery was tragically cut short.
Alexander’s memory continues to burn brightly even 15 years down the road. HackTone Records’ David Gorman and Michael Nieves have set out to create a definitive memorial to Alexander with Lonely Just Like Me: The Final Chapter. They enlisted the assistance of both A&R man Kahn and Vaughn and emerged with this sumptuous package. Just don’t call it a reissue – at least without qualification – as it contains many never-before-heard songs that might have easily never seen the light of day.

HackTone was founded by a pair of crate diggers who believe that there’s no such thing as “good music whose time has passed,” and their new distribution deal with Rhino represents a return to the fold. Before launching design and marketing firm HackMart, co-founder David Gorman was Rhino’s “Creative Czar,” winning an Art Direction Grammy for the Beg, Scream & Shout: The Big ’Ol Box Of ’60s Soul collection in 1998. TSOB Records Signs With Universal, Releases "The Sampler Album"
Setting it off is 2x Grammy Ballot Nominee "Etcetera", the enigmatic and soulful 17 year old Phenom "Cocoa Sarai", Mott Haven, Bronx's own "Jhett-O-Nasis" and QB's Pop Diva "Sha".
Together these artists possess a very unique sense of style when it comes to music. TSOB Records prides itself in keeping with the tradition in creating quality music with broad appeal. "Our music is universal", says Joel, CEO of TSOB Records.
TSOB Records pays homage to some of Brooklyn's Finest - Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, The Notorious B.I.G., Lil' Kim, Foxy Brown, Fabolous and the list goes on. TSOB Records distinguishes itself from other start-up labels by working hard at producing quality music for yesterday, today and tomorrow. Equipped with just a small staff and an artist roster of only 5 their music covers five genres of music. They have created a sound that is both hip and refreshing. The roster includes Shiz of "Etcetera" who has placed on the Grammy Nominee Ballot twice, in 2005 and 2007. R&B artists Cocoa Sarai and Sha' bring back-to-basics soul and melodic flavor, while Bx's own Jhett-O-Nasis bring street savvy rhymes and block huggin' swagger.
Etcetera first hit the scene in 2000 and continued with a string of underground hits, labeling them one of the best underground chart toppers in their class, as well as establishing them as premier writers and producers. Etcetera has always been a group of diversity. This was demonstrated with their 2004 hip-hop rock release "Oh No" which landed them a 3 category ballot nomination at The 47th Annual Grammy Awards. With their follow-up record "Welcome 2 Brooklyn" Etcetera has once again hurdled further into the hip-hop chronicles with their 2nd ballot nomination in 3 highly competitive categories at The 49th Annual Grammy Awards, as well as theme music on a popular video game show. With these honors and a deal through Universal now in their favor ETCETERA has advanced themselves to the next step...mainstream.

Escreet exudes an astonishing sense of authority, passion and vision when sat at the piano. It was to a packed Pizza-on-the-Park that John Escreet, with his quartet, played two smouldering forty-five minute sets to an audience who were spell bound by his single-minded approach to both so-called standards as well as a smattering of own material

The Times
‘John Escreet returns to the Pizza Express with a new quartet, featuring some of the most exciting young musicians on the New York music scene, with whom he has formed strong musical bonds since relocating to the States. These kindred spirits have come together in New York from various parts of the globe, and have been developing and exchanging their musical ideas over the past year. The band includes the astonishing young alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder, who has already made a huge impact during his fist year in New York, working in Jean-Michel Pilc’s band with James Genus and Keith Carlock amongst others. Also, the explosive yet sensitive new drumming sensation Colin Stranahan, who has just been hand picked by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter to begin a two-year programme at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute in New Orleans. The quartet will be completed by the UK bassist of choice Phil Donkin. This one-off show promises to be a truly special occasion, a musical treat full of surprises.
John Escreet was born in Doncaster in 1984. In 1995 he joined the Doncaster Youth Jazz Association, quickly becoming the main pianist with the senior Doncaster Jazz Orchestra. From 1998 to 2002, John attended the prestigious Chetham's School of Music, studying classical piano and saxophone, whilst pursuing his rapidly growing interest in jazz. In 2001, he won the John Dankworth soloist award in the BBC Radio 2 Big Band Competition, and the following year was awarded a scholarship to study jazz at the Royal Academy of Music in London where his tutors included Liam Noble and John Taylor. In 2004, John won the Worshipful Company of Musicians Bronze Medal award, and was a national finalist in the Pizza Express Jazz Academy competition.
Despite his young age, John’s versatility and his approach to a wide range of musical styles - from straight-ahead jazz, to funk, to free improvisation - has made him one of the most in-demand players to have emerged on the London scene in recent years. He’s worked in many different settings as both a leader (his own trios included Phil Donkin on bass, and Gene Calderazzo or Tom Skinner on drums), and as a sideman to artists as varied as Julian Siegel, Dennis Rollins, Stan Sulzmann, Denys Baptiste, Dave O'Higgins, Christine Tobin, Anita Wardell, Andy Sheppard, Steve Williamson and Kyle Eastwood. Despite this, in 2006, on receipt of a scholarship, John relocated to New York City where he is currently studying jazz piano at Manhattan School of Music with Kenny Barron.

HP's Musical Debut @ the Tribeca Film Festival
Last week, acclaimed director Michael Kang debuted his sophomore film "West 32nd" at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film featured one of my songs, "Leave Me To Dream" so I was fortunate enough to catch a screening! It was kind of like an out of body experience...when the song actually came on, I didn't even realize it was my own until someone tapped me. :)
Congratulations to Michael and the incredible cast for an unbelievable production! Please support this movie and see it when it comes to a theater near you!
***Joy Denalane - Change Feat Lupe Fiasco*** New Single!!! Out June 18!!!
***NEW SINGLE***
This Summer sees the release of “Change”, the new single by Joy Denalane. Featuring Lupe Fiasco, “Change“ is the next chapter of Hip-Hop Soul taken from her new album “Born & Raised”, currently heating it up on MTV Base’s Spanking New Playlist and 1xtra’s B List!

INFO ON BANDS:
THE BAMBOOS - MAY 17
The Bamboos are Australia's premier Deep Funk outfit. Masters of
super-heavy, raw and upfront drum-break driven grooves. Led by
Guitarist Lance Ferguson (Lanu/No Comply), other members include Ben
Grayson (Hammond Organ), Danny Farrugia (Drums), Yuri Pavlinov (Bass),
Anton Delecca (Sax/Flute) and Ross Irwin (Trumpet) and Kylie Auldist
(Vocals) The Bamboos formed in 2001 and released the 7" single 'Eel
Oil/Blackfoot', earning them international acclaim from the likes of
Snowboy, Mr Scruff, Jazzanova, Patrick Forge and Russ Dewbury. Their
next release 'Tighten Up/Voodoo Doll' was picked up by Kenny Dope
(Masters At Work) and Keb Darge (Legendary Deep Funk) for their
U.S-based imprint Kay-Dee Records. Making their home at Tru Thoughts
records (home to Quantic and Alice Russell) in 2005, The Bamboos debut
album 'Step it Up' went on to receive unanimous praise from Funk fans
around the world. 'Step It Up' was released by Ubiquity Records in the
U.S, and the title track featured in the Season 3 of the hit U.S TV
show 'Grey's Anatomy'. In 2004 and 2005 The Bamboos toured Australia
and New Zealand alongside Quantic and Alice Russell to universal
acclaim. In 2006 the band embarked on a U.K/European tour that
included shows at esteemed venues including The Jazz Cafe (London) and
The Brighton Jazz Rooms. The Bamboos live shows have evolved into
non-stop mixtape-style throwdowns that draw the links between Hip Hop,
Funk and old-school Breaks.
OCEANIC - MAY 18TH
OISIN is Bristol born and bred. He started by singing and MCing for
Bristol and UK based DJs such as DJ Die - part of the legendary Full
Cycle Camp. Now his talents are being nurtured by the city's biggest
homegrown Drum n Bass artist Roni Size. it was a chance meeting with
Roni at a house party one night that brought about this album. Roni
heard Oisin singing in a back room and after talking, he invited Oisin
to do some studio work. Since then they have worked on many
collaborations and Roni further nurtured Oisin's talent by taking him
on tour in the UK, Europe and the USA. Recently Oisin has devoted
himself to studio work and developing his song writing, and Roni's
faith in him has culminated in producing this raw, edgy, upbeat album.
LP produced by Roni Size and featuring Ben Westbeech
JOAN DAVIS - MAY 31
Jazz vocalist Joan Davis was born in Washington D. C., the
cosmopolitan capital of America's East Coast. Her colourful career in
the United States included solo performances at The Cellar Door and
One Step Down in Washington D.C. She has played with some of the great
jazz musicians of our time, including Gil Scott Heron and Bobby
McFerrin. Ms Davis' UK career includes a spell as lead vocalist for
the Jazz/Soul sextet Southern Comfort and various successful groups
based in London. Joan has enjoyed a vibrant career which has included
appearing at Ronnie Scott's, and working with a number of well-known
musicians such as Bobby McFerrin, and Pee Wee Ellis among others.
Joan's latest album Promiseland brings together the talents of
saxophonist Tony Kofi, pianist Anders Olinder, bass player Larry
Bartley and Winston Clifford on drums.
PEE WEE ELLIS - MAY 27
Saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis was the architect of James Brown's
era-defining soul classics of the late 1960s, introducing the dynamic
arrangements and punishing rhythms that would define the emerging
language of funk. He joined the James Brown Revue in 1965 and was
assigned alto sax and organ duties. Ellis quickly proved himself an
invaluable contributor to arrangements and horn charts as well, and
when Nat Jones quit the lineup in early 1967, Brown named Ellis his
new musical director, resulting in significant refinements to the
Godfather of Soul's sound. Ellis channeled the lessons of his jazz
background to strip Brown's music to its bare essentials,
showcasing bold, precise horns and repetitive rhythms with a minimum
of melodic embellishment -- hits like "Cold Sweat," "Licking
Stick-Licking Stick," and "Funky Drummer" redefined the sound and
scope of soul, pointing the way for its transformation to funk.
Ellis went on to co-write and arrange a series of James Brown smashes,
including "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" and "Mother Popcorn,"
as well as issuing a handful of solo singles on Brown's label King,
among them "Little Green Apples" and "In the Middle." He resigned from
Brown's band in the autumn of 1969, and after settling in New York
City he signed to the Nashville-based Sound Stage 7 label and issued
the rare groove classic "Moonwalk." Ellis also emerged as a
sought-after session player, contributing to dates headlined by
everyone from soul-jazz great Brother Jack McDuff to a latter-day
blues-rock incarnation of the Blues Magoos.
He then served as musical director and arranger for the CTI label's
influential fusion imprint Kudu, overseeing sessions for Esther
Phillips, George Benson, and Hank Crawford

Dennis Rollins plays Montreux Jazz Festival
Multi-award winning
Dennis Rollins’ Badbone & Co
plays the
41st Montreux Jazz Festival
on
Saturday 7 July 2007
Dennis is that rarest of jazz beasts: a genuine star
The Independent on Sunday
Dennis Rollins’ Badbone & Co is also playing Glastonbury on Saturday 23 June and the gig is being broadcast live on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line-Up
Multi-award winning British jazz star, Dennis Rollins is an acclaimed musician, composer and educator, well-known on the British and international jazz scene, and celebrated for his versatility and unique approach to the underrated trombone, to which he brings a unique and exciting approach. His mighty sound can be heard to full effect in his award winning band Badbone & Co’s repertoire of groove-based, funky dance music with jazz overtones. Badbone & Co won the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best Band last year, and Dennis picked up the Marston’s Pedigree British Jazz Award for Best Trombonist; he was also nominated in the Best Jazz Act category at the Urban Music Awards 2006.
Dennis has been nominated in the Educator of the Year category in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards (taking place on 24 April) and in the Trombonist of the Year category in the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards (taking place on Monday 7 May). Dennis is Guest Director for the 2007 Glasgow International Jazz Festival taking place in July, and he’s also Artist in Residence at the ever-popular Marsden Jazz Festival in October.
Born in 1964 in the Midlands to Jamaican parents, and raised in South Yorkshire, Dennis cut his teeth at the age of 14 studying and performing with The Doncaster Youth Jazz Association. After years of study, Dennis moved to London and began playing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) and the legendary all-black jazz big band The Jazz Warriors. Over the years, Dennis, now based in Doncaster, has established a reputation as an artist of excellence and has lent his unique and stylish talents to some of this country's, and indeed the world's, top jazz and pop personalities such as Courtney Pine, Baba Maal, Jamiroquai, US3, Brand New Heavies and Blur.
Dennis is also recognised as an effective and inspirational educator. His Rhythms of Fire project won the 2006 Arts & Kids Award, part of the regional Arts & Business Awards. Rhythms of Fire was a commission from Doncaster’s first annual HotHouse Festival and involved 180 children from Doncaster primary schools producing poems on the theme of ‘hot’. The poems were then used by Dennis to inspire a suite of compositions.
Dennis Rollins' Badbone & Co has released three critically acclaimed albums: Badbone, Make Your Move, and last year’s Big Night Out! which is classic Dennis Rollins, but with extra funk.
