Can a Sista Roc a Mic Festival

Russell Taylor! For July/August

Hello Rt! Family! It has been a busy couple of week, but fun nonetheless. Special shout outs to Mabili Kregg, Sista' Factory and BAM Cafe for their Summer Series 2007. I had a great time, and really enjoyed the vibe. Also, shout out to my Miami Family that came out for Alex's Bday show. Special holla' to Jody and the Deep Fried Funk Band. Then to DC w with SEI Entertainment. Blues Alley was a great Bday show celebration with honor and gratitude. It is such an amazing spot with a history of legends. Oh, and Bmore with Patti LaBelle and Anthony David...I got to sing with Patti y'all. CRAZY!!! I could barely sing. I just stood to there with the mic and my mouth open in awe that such a small lady could produce such voice and energy. If you are ever in DC check out POSH's Girl's Night Out. It was a great event with JCM Entertainment. I'll be back to DC on July 30th at the Birchmere with Elisabeth Withers. I hope some of you can make it.In the meantime however, I WILL be at JOES PUB this Thursday, July 19th 7pm with my Soul Brother Selan. This will be a great show, my first early show in a long time, and one of my last NY shows of the year. I hope to see you, your Mama' and your cousins at this one. Also, for all you singers and musicians, try to make your way down to ATL's Soul Summit. Last year it was an amazing networking tool for this game...and you get to share the stage with other great artists at some point or another.Keep your eyes peeled for the site too, I got some new things to post including some pictures of my travels over the past 6 months.Stay tuned for Can A Sista' Rock the Mic in August, shows in DC, Norfolk, Boston, LA and Paris! Thanks for keeping in touch...and feel free to forward and CONVINCE your friends and family to JOIN my mailing list at www.russelltaylor.net. Peace and Soul!Rt!

CHRISTIAN YOUTH ORGANISATION JOINS FORCES WITH FOUR KORNERZ

CHRISTIAN YOUTH ORGANISATION JOINS FORCES WITH FOUR KORNERZ

Four Kornerz have just signed a key partnership agreement with leading Christian organisation Youth For Christ.

The move will see Four Kornerz become Youth For Christ's main band to assist in promoting the Christian charity's work which dates back to 1946 when originally founded by US preacher Billy Graham. Previously, Youth For Christ have worked with in-house created music groups to spearhead schools, community and prison initiatives. But this is the first time in recent years the organisation has actively outsourced such a key role to an already existing outfit, in this instance Four Kornerz.

Embarking on this new phase, Four Kornerz lead singer Deji comments: "This adds a new depth to what we do as band. Four Kornerz and Youth For Christ have a shared passion and vision to positively impact youth culture in a relevant way. And we are very excited about this alliance."

The band's first official Youth For Christ engagement will be on Sat 13 October where they will take part in "Showcase Day" at Coventry Central Hall. Over 800 workers and youth from all over the Youth For Christ UK network are expected to attend and Four Kornerz will not only bring their exhilarating brand of live music but also take part in the official Commissioning Service to formal welcome the band as an official Associate Ministry of Youth For Christ.

Director of National Ministries Dave Newton expresses with great enthusiasm, "Youth for Christ are very excited to be partnering with such a vibrant, talented band. The boy's energy, professionalism and commitment to mission is unquestionable. As a result of this partnership, we will be working to deliver a number of evangelistic events and create opportunities for Four Kornerz to work in schools and young offenders institutes. We are anticipating many exciting opportunities which will extend our influence and ultimately reach more young people with the Good News of Jesus."

The major scale of the partnership will take full force in 2008 when the band makes its debut at the annual Youth For Christ staff conference and take on a key city tour alongside the Christian organisation.

SOBO Magazine Online: the rebirth interview

Don¹t Mess With Mr T: James Taylor Quartet Plays Motown

Hammond-led funk outfit

James Taylor Quartet
releases its new album
Don’t Mess With Mr T: James Taylor Quartet Plays Motown
on
Monday 3 September 2007
(Dome Records; Dome CD86)

Always great work from the mighty James Taylor, one of the few artists who's kept his groove going for over a 20 year period. Back in the 80s, Taylor first caught our ear as a new organist playing with a classic 60s Hammond sound - funky, soulful, and right on the money - and all these many years later, James is still very much at the top of his game, able to handle a Hammond with a flair that few other players can match
Dusty Groove America

James Taylor’s trademark howling Hammond sound is featured to fine effect on his new album, Don’t Mess With Mr T: James Taylor Quartet Plays Motown, a storming set of Motown covers featuring guest lead vocalists OMAR, HIL ST SOUL, and DONNA GARDIER.

The 12-tune collection kicks off with an explosive version of Barrett Strong’s Money (That’s What I Want). If, as Berry Gordy Jr has said, Motown was built brick by brick, hit by hit, then this tune was its foundation stone. The rest of the album certainly builds from its opener, with the funky vibe continuing through Marvin Gaye’s Got To Give It Up; Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours); Shorty Long’s Function At The Junction; Jimmy Mack; Machine Gun, written by The Commodores’ keyboardist Milan Williams; Ashford and Simpson’s You’re All I Need To Get By; and Don’t Mess With Mr T, a Marvin Gaye tune written for the blaxploitation movie, Trouble Man.

Album highlights include After The Dance, the second hit from Marvin Gaye’s 1976 album, I Want You, on which Omar, the father of nu-classic British soul lends his immense vocal talents; Come See About Me, featuring Donna Gardier, one of the UK’s most soulful voices; and Smokey Robinson’s You Beat Me To The Punch, with the magnificent Hil St Soul, a regular on the US Billboard R&B charts, providing inspiring vocals.

The regular JTQ line-up of James Taylor: Hammond organ; Nigel Price: guitar; Andy McKinney: bass; and Adam Betts: drums is augmented on this album by Jamie Anderson: sax; Nick Smart: trumpet; Dave Williamson: trombone; and Oreste-Noda Fernandez: percussion.

JTQ’s fired-up signature tune, The Theme from Starsky and Hutch, cemented the band’s reputation as masters of the jazz-funk-r’n’b workout; 60s spy themes, psychedelic and free-form jazz all added something to the band’s distinctive sound. Originally playing the Hammond B3 organ in the UK mod revival band The Prisoners, James Taylor formed his own quartet in 1985, and began playing music similar to the rare-groove jazz-funk then in vogue around London. By the early 90s, that movement had spawned acid jazz, and JTQ found itself at the forefront of a vibrant young club scene. The first single, Blow-Up - a funked-up version of Herbie Hancock's theme from the seminal 60s film of the same name - was released in 1985 on the Re Elect The President label, a precursor to Acid Jazz. The band's debut album, Mission Impossible, was released the following year, predominantly consisting of covers of 60s film themes such as Alfie, Mrs. Robinson and Goldfinger. In the early 1990s, the single Love The Life reached the Top 40 and the accompanying album, Supernatural Feeling, settled in the Top 30 UK charts. After releases on Polydor and Big Life Records, JTQ returned to Acid Jazz, and In The Hand of The Inevitable remains the label's biggest selling album to date.

In 1997 James had the chance to fulfil a dream when he was asked to score the theme tune to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, the spy spoof starring Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley. JTQ’s Whole Lotta Live album was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998, and the following year James featured on Tom Jones’ duets album, Reload. James’ musical talent has been admired by numerous other acts: The Wonderstuff, Manic Street Preachers, The Pogues and U2 have all featured James and his distinctive Hammond sound on their albums.

JTQ’s last album, A Taste of Cherry, was released in September 2006. A new outfit, James Taylor’s 4th Dimension, recently released Picking Up Where We Left Off, to critical acclaim.

Dome Records is currently celebrating its 15th successful year. Readers of Blues & Soul magazine has consistently voted Dome Records the UK’s leading black music label, and early discoveries include Beverley Knight, Hil St Soul, and Dennis Taylor. More recent additions to the Dome roster include US singer-songwriter Eric Roberson, Donnie, Brenda Russell, Rahsaan Patterson, Incognito, Angela Johnson, one-time Prince New Power Generation member Rosie Gaines, Carleen Anderson, Don-E and George Duke.

100 who care about Eva D.

"100 Who Care about Eva D."

June 24, 2007

Dear Friend of the Black Ensemble:

Do you remember Eva D? How many of you saw "The Jackie Wilson Story" (My Heart Is Crying, Crying) Eva D. played Lavern Baker. You might remember her from "The Other Cinderella" as the stepsister, Margarite. We can go even further back to Eva starring as Mom's Mabley. Eva D. has been with the Black Ensemble Theater since 1987, we are her family, her friends and we love her deeply.

Eva suffered a stroke in September 2006. Ever since the first day of her stroke we have been by her side. She has faced many challenges during this time and there are many more to come, but Eva is strong, willing and determined! She will overcome this and perform again with the Black Ensemble Theater.

Sometimes as a community we must hold each other up in order to survive. I'm asking you as a member of the Black Ensemble Theater community to help us, help Eva D. to continue to thrive and survive. We hope you will be a part of the "100 Who care about Eva D."

Eva D. is now in a nursing home, a good nursing home that is giving her excellent care.

However, her insurance does not cover these expenses. If you've ever experienced the calamity of our insurance system you will understand how sometimes, insurance is just not enough. I am asking you to help us continue the care that she is receiving. We are asking 100 people to give $100. This will allow us to continue her care until her disability begins. I hope you will be part of the "100 Who Care About Eva D." These are people who are willing and able to help another human being in their time of need.

"The 100 Who Care About Eva D." will help insure that she is well on the way to complete recovery. Send your check made out to Eva Durham to the Black Ensemble Theater, 4520 N. Beacon - Chicago, Illinois 60640. If $100 is too much for you at this time, of course whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated.

You can also donate online by clicking the button below:

On Tuesday, July 10th we will be celebrating Eva's birthday at the Black Ensemble Theater from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Please join us as we celebrate and honor the strength and tenacity of this wonderful woman.

God Bless You and Thank You for being a part of the "100 Who Care About Eva D."

Sincerely,

Jackie Taylor
