| Got to pass my condolences out to Lucky Dube's family. Heard the tragic news. He was shot to death in front of his 2 kids in S.Africa. Those not familiar with Lucky Dube. He was one of the biggest music stars in Africa... I actually had the pleasure of interviewing him years ago on WRFG in Atlanta. Very sad indeed. R.I.P On a positive note-- got this killer killer album in the mail today and I've already been listening to it 8 times...Can't stop..It is absolutely fabulous and highly creative and can easily appeal to a broad audience. These are my homeboys from Holland and you've heard me talk about them for a few years now...C-Mon and Kypski. In fact-- I did their NY Debut a couple years back at Joe's Pub. The album is called 'Where The Wild Things Are' and trust me-- big things are on the horizon for these boys. They dropped by our Digital Cocktail Party during CMJ last week at Ariel Publicity.... In closing- like to say--- keep striving, aspiring and inspiring. That's all from The Bloom Effect.Build The Buzz and creating The BLOOM Fiona Bloom The Bloom Effect email: fiona@thebloomeffect.com |

THURSDAY (10/25)

Please support my friend and comrade, Tim'm West, next Thursday at Vanderbilt University's Campus Bookstore at Rand Hall. He will be reading from his latest book, Flirting, at 3:00 PM. SPREAD THE WORD!!! For more info on Tim'm, visit www.reddirt.biz.
MORE INFORMATION ON 10/30 NYC EVENT!!!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Poet, Author, Hip-Hop and Youth Activist, Tim’m T. West partners with SOBO Magazine for Indie Artist Showcase in New York City Event: The Front Porch at Common Grounds Cafe
When: Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Time: 7:00 pm Where: Common Grounds Café in Brooklyn, 376 Tompkins Avenue (between Jefferson and Putnam) Admission: Free Contact Information: For information on Common Grounds Café, call 718-484-4368, media inquiries can be sent to tru@reddirt.biz
The pioneering Tim’m West has partnered with the Houston-based SOBO Magazine to bring his “Front Porch” event to New York City.
The Front Porch is an eclectic and progressive showcase of soul, spoken word and hip-hop that has been a staple in Washington DC for three years and has also been hosted in Chicago and Oakland. West is preparing to launch the event in his new hometown of Atlanta, GA as well.
The event features a diverse range of critically acclaimed, forerunning artists in the independent soul, hip-hop and spoken word scene. West will serve as host of the event with Georgette Whaley, editor and co-founder of SOBO Magazine.
Hosted at Brooklyn’s Common Grounds Café, artists performing include New York City’s Baron, Nashville’s Tim Dillinger and Philadelphia’s Anam Owili-Eger and Ashley Phillips.
West says, “SOBO Magazine represents so much of what I've tried to foster with Front Porch events over the years: eclectic audiences, non-scripted collaboration, exposure to amazing artists often on the margins of even the indie scene, the lack of pretense that often comes with music and performance art shows that draw other artists. My hope is to support both SOBO Magazine and Common Grounds Café, by offering something groundbreaking and consistent to my old turf, Bestuy and Brooklyn. Among all the things I do, I'm most proud of the bridges I build between people. The artists participating in this event are among the best out there.”
As a teacher, performance artist, author, and culture producer, Tim'm has become an exemplar among contemporary Renaissance personalities of the early 21st Century as he brings others to voice through education for critical consciousness. He co-founded the notorious homo-hop group, Deep Dickollective, released two solo albums and three books. He was featured in two critically acclaimed Hip Hop documentaries: Alex Hinton’s “Pick Up The Mic” (LOGO) and Byron Hurt’s “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” (PBS), presenting him as one of the critical voices in Hip Hop today. For more information, visit www.reddirt.biz.
SOBO Magazine is the brainchild of husband and wife team, Christopher and Georgette Whaley. Celebrating its first anniversary, SOBO has featured some of the leading artists in the independent music scene including Eric Roberson, Frank McComb and Omar as well as legends such as Nikki Giovanni, Nona Hendryx and Melle Mel. For more information, visit www.sobomag.com
About The Artists
baron. www.myspace.com/artistbaron
As a performance poet, baron.'s style is vivid and captivating. His brutal and heart-wrenching depiction of urban life shocks audiences again and again, yet a careful listener can quickly discerns an underlying message of love. baron.'s work is truthful, honest and passionate. He candidly speaks about the issues that divide the African American community on the subjects of love, family, community, and sexuality.
His debut CD, Troubled Man, was released in 2004 and he is currently in production on his sophomore effort, Celebrity. He was also a producer on the critically acclaimed Deep Dickollective release, On Some Other (2007). Tim Dillinger www.myspace.com/timdillinger
A multi-faceted personality: singer, songwriter, poet, radio host, activist and speaker, Dillinger’s latest release, The Muse, has earned international critical acclaim as well as nominations from the SoulTracks.com Reader’s Choice Awards, the Southern Entertainment Awards and the Agape Independent Music Awards. He was also the recipient of the 2007 SOBO Magazine Music Awards. His music is a hybrid of influences: Earth, Wind & Fire meets Laura Nyro meets The Hawkins Family.
He is one of a handful of OUT artists in the R&B/Soul community, and he continues to defy racial, sexual and religious definition. He is preparing to release a gospel album (Dawning of a New Day) in 2008 and tour affirming and radically inclusive congregations and GLBT college groups.
anam Owili-Eger www.myspace.com/anamanam
Through his idiosyncratic piano playing and his uniquely soulful voice, singer/songwriter Anam Owili-Eger defies genres by weaving a colorful fabric of soul, jazz, funk, folk and rock. With influences as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tori Amos and McCoy Tyner, Anam’s brand of alternative soul music captivates audiences not only through his playing, but also through his introspective—and sometimes dark or political—lyrics of love, loneliness, madness and mortality.
Anam released his debut solo EP, These Subtle Declarations, in February 2006. His song, "The Moment," was a finalist in the 2005 Singer/Songwriter Awards. "The Coin," was a semifinalist in the 2005 UK Songwriting Contest. He is currently in production on his first full-length release.
Captivating audiences with her intimately soulful and lyrical professions of love, life, and truth, Philadelphia-born Ashley Phillips is a singer/songwriter to watch out for. Influenced heavily by jazz/funk, pop, and progressive R&B, Ashley's unique blend of acoustic R&B and soul draws comparisons to such artists as Minnie Riperton, Amel Larrieux, Adriana Evans, and Dionne Farris.
Ashley is an OUT musician who hopes to effect the industry by remaining a visible and positive image projected to as many communities and people that can be reached.

The online marketing site for the music community reverbnation.com continues to provide some of the best tools for artists on the web and for now these tools are FREE. Now bands can cross promote each other anywhere on the web and the tool is good for artists, managers, labels and promoters. Reverbnation has announced the launch of TuneWidget; a better way to promote your band, and a cool way to introduce new music to your fans. What is TuneWidget exactly? For starters, imagine a miniature band website that packs pictures, music, video, band info, tour schedules (w/map), a storefront, and even a "join the mailing list" function into a space about the size of the MySpace music player. Mike Borgia, Indie musician from New York, says "It's like carrying a website in your (virtual) pocket." Tunewidget can be posted to social networks like MySpace, on homepages, and to almost any blog. Fans can copy and share TuneWidget with friends, spreading it virally for the musicians they love. Like all of the widgets from ReverbNation, Tunewidget is tracked so that artists know how it is spreading. Check out a sample of TuneWidget here: Tune Widget | ||

NASHVILLE EVENT
Any one who has listened to "Out the Box" this season has heard me bragging about and playing music by my friend and comrade Tim'm West. We featured him a few weeks ago and now I am excited to announce that he will be coming to Nashville for a book reading/signing at Vanderbilt University's Campus Bookstore at Rand Hall.
His latest book, "Flirting", and new CD, "Blakkboy Blues" are both amazing works of art...and Tim'm's vision is one of the most stirring I have experienced in qutie a while.
The book signing is Thursday, October 25th at 3:00 PM at Vanderbilt's Campus Bookstore at Rand Hall. I strongly encourage my Nashville friends and family to support this event...
More about Tim'm is below.

Black, queer, feminist, poz, and working class, Tim'm T. West has embraced all of who he is and, with laser-beam precision, harnessed the power of his truth to illuminate, celebrate, inspire, provoke, and bear witness. As a teacher, performance artist, author, and culture producer, Tim'm has become an exemplar among contemporary Renaissance personalities of the early 21st Century as he brings others to voice through education for critical consciousness. Tim’m West is a Cincinnati-born, Arkansas raised author, poet and Hip-Hop-Activist who has been artistically nurtured in North Carolina, New York City, the Bay Area, and most recently, Washington DC. West complements the release of “Blakkboy Blue(s)” with the literary follow-up to his first book, “Red Dirt Revival”, entitled “Flirting”. Just as “Red Dirt Revival” and “Songs From Red Dirt” was an autobiographical album that traced his roots as a young child in rural Arkansas to his adult years in New York City and the Bay Area, “Blakkboy Blue(s)” and “Flirting” offer a resolved, hopeful and polished voice. In “Blakkboy Blue(s)”, West moves from memories of finding Hip Hop down south to a sound that beautifully blends his gospel and blues roots with the sounds that largely define his movement through various urban settings.
Says West, “If leaving home leads to nostalgia for your Red Dirt, you gotta someday realize that you can never fully return home. “Blakkboy Blue(s)” is not just about accepting that home is where the heart is, but also accepting that remembering isn’t enough—that life as an activist calls for, not just thinking, but acting in the service of social change.” “Blakkboy Blue(s)”, following Tim’m’s feature in two critically acclaimed Hip Hop documentaries: Alex Hinton’s “Pick Up The Mic” (LOGO) and Byron Hurt’s “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” (PBS), presents him as one of the critical voices in Hip Hop today. As the mantra of the Grand Royal produced “Irony” states: “O say can you see/What Hip Hop is supposed to be/All I see is Irony/Hip Hop ain’t dead/He just needs to get free”. Tim’m offers a curative for a Hip Hop gone bling. An unapologetic “old school” emcee, he is the one who has matured with Hip Hop; and questions an industry that doesn’t support that evolution.
For more information on Tim’m T. West log on to the website at www.reddirt.biz.

Detroit, MI- Oct 3, 2007- The Urban Organic Festival is an outgrowth of the Urban Organic Experience, an annual music and art celebration that began in October 2001. Since its inception, it has grown to become a multi-venue weekend festival celebrating positive, emerging, and progressive soul and hip-hop artists from around the world. The festival highlights other art forms such as: culinary, fashion and film. In previous years, The Urban Organic Festival has drawn hundreds of attendees including, artists, and industry types from around the United States, Canada and as far away as London, England
To name a few – Dwele, Kem, Kindred, Raheem Devaughn, Anthony David, Amp Fiddler, Leela James, Goapele, and Eric Roberson were all introduced to the Detroit market via Urban Organic. In the Detroit News, last September, Motown recording artist Kem applauded, “Urban Organic for creating an essential sort of springboard for talent on the rise." He went onto to express, "When you are invited into the experience, it's like you're going through a necessary initiation into the Detroit Live Music marketplace."
Drake Phifer, founder of Urban Organic says, "We knew in the beginning that we wanted to create a quality product. The intent was to create a track record for selecting great artists on the rise that would feed back into the brand, and compel people to want to come out even if they weren't familiar with the artist. I think that we have achieved just that.”
”This year’s festival’s theme is Connecting the Dots, and we basically wanted to show where the love of the music originates. We are on a continuum, and it is important to look back and see who led the way. For that reason, we have chosen Roy Ayers to be our headlining artist as well as a bevy of other critical and emerging performers from Detroit and around the nation. It’s going to be a hallmark weekend for the city of Detroit and for the entire independent soul community.

| "Double Trouble was joined this night by some of Chicago's finest young budding stars: Junius Paul on bass, Isaiah Spencer on drums and Chris Rob on keyboards. Chris Rob is a native Chicagoan working out of New York alongside Maurice Brown in his 'Soul'd U Out' group. This young man can play!!! He displayed rapid-fire hands on the keyboard while demonstrating a soft touch when it was called for. The beauty of the Velvet's intimate surroundings allows for a soft touch without the need of over-amplification. Rob also showcased nice vocals with the ability to scat and improvise a wide vocal range. He truly was the "X-Factor" during this set." www.Jazzchicago.net |
