An Evening With Maysa Live At The Music Center At Strathmore

Mojo Live in association with On The Verge Presents

AN EVENING WITH
MAYSA
With Special Guests
Gary Taylor and Fertile Ground

Friday November 30, 2007

The Music Center At Strathmore
5301 Tuckerman Lane
North Bethesda, MD 20852-3385
301-581-5100
Quick Links

The evening promises to be an electrifying night as Maysa headlines this phenomenal line up and graces the elegant stage at The Music Center At Strathmore with her classically trained, jazz infused style of soulful vocals.

As a special guest Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter/producer Gary Taylor will join Maysa on November 30th. Taylor is most known for speaking to the hearts of women and men regarding love, romance and the almighty relationship thru his thoughtful, intelligent and impassioned soul music.

To round out the line up Fertile Ground, another Maryland favorite, will also join Maysa as special guests for the evening. Fertile Ground is often classified as a soul/jazz band but they spill out of any genre as a cross-cultural fusion of all things spiritual and funk-ridden.

Hello to all my Soulful Friends!

Sometimes it's hard to believe how fast time passes. The last newsletter I sent out to you was in the spring, and here it is Autumn already, and Thanksgiving has just passed. I just can't keep up! So here I am once again with the 7th edition of the Soulful Sound Music newsletter. In this issue I have a couple of good news items to share and I also wanted to give you a "heads up" about our next show at Cornelia St. Cafe in NYC this coming Wednesday, 11/28 (see details below.)

In other news, I wanted to take a moment to give congratulations to a couple of very talented friends. First off, Ragan Whiteside has released her CD, "Class Axe." She had her standing room only CD release party last week at the Village Underground. If you haven't yet had a chance to check out her music, go to her website at www.raganwhiteside.com.

Secondly, bassist and vocalist, Miriam Sullivan, is busy working on her debut CD release as a leader. The work will feature her original music. She also has a new website where you can read more about what she's been up to. Visit the website at: www.miriamsullivan.com.

Thanks, as always, for your love, support and encouragement. It keeps me going especially when times get hard. I appreciate each and every one of you and give thanks constantly for your presence in my life. Thanks for being always there.

~ big hugs 4 U! ~

Mala

CD Baby News
"Always There" Places #8 on List of Top Sellers

CD Cover i just recently found out that CD Baby has a list of its top sellers in each genre of music. Apparently, Always There is listed under the Jazz category in the Soul/Jazz category at #8. Not bad, considering how many thousands of independent artists are selling their CDs there.

So, In celebration of this, we're offering the CD for a limited time only at a reduced price of $7.99 ($ 5.99 to download.) Please note that the reduced price won't show on the "sellers list" but just click on the "Always There" cd cover and you'll be brought to my page where the corrected special price is listed. Happy Holidays!

CD Baby Top Sellers

Shinzone Compilation
"Light My Fire" included on Japanese CD Compilation

Shinzone, a well-known Japanese designer label has several boutiques which are very popular in Japan. Recently, Shinzone collaborated with Columbia Music Entertainment in the release of a CD compilation to sell in their stores. The idea was to feature some of Columbia's artists in the stores, thus helping to bring increased exposure to each artists' individual CDs on the Columbia label.

The CD was released this past June. My recording of Light My Fire was chosen as one of the tracks. Other artists featured on the compilation are: Zonke, Culture Clan and Inger Marie.

Upcoming Shows
Wednesday, November 28 @ Cornelia St. Cafe, NYC

This coming Wednesday, November 28, we'll be playing at the Cornelia St. Cafe (29 Cornelia St., NYC) in the village. Some of you may remember this place as it's where we did our "Bon Voyage" show last year, prior to leaving for our tour of China/Asia.

We'll be sharing the bill with vocalist, Sarah DeLeo, who will go on at 8:30 pm. We'll follow with a set at 9:30 pm. This show is part of a monthly series being presented by Jon Sobel and Soul of the Blues. You can check out both bands for one low cover price of $10. You can get more information about the Cornelia St. Cafe at: http://www.corneliastreetcafe.com.

Soulful Sound Music is an independent company formed and operated by yours truly, Mala Waldron. We're on a shoestring budget at the moment and making the most of word-of-mouth marketing. This means the more you spread the word about the new music, our performances and this newsletter, the more publicity gets generated, hopefully resulting in CD sales. At least that's how it works theoretically folks.

Unified Tribe’s second single release “Happy Go Lucky” to air on The Bold and The Beautiful

Las Vegas, Nevada November 15, 2007 - Unified Tribe’s Funktional Family CD continues to capture listeners all over the globe. The Bold and the Beautiful will air their second single, Happy Go Lucky on Friday, November 16, 2007. Happy Go Lucky is the follow-up to their chart topping single Back n’ Forth. Both jocks and listeners are digging the upbeat, mood transforming sounds of the track.

FUNKtional Family, the third release from mega-band Unified Tribe is making noise in both radio and retail. The first single “Back and Forth,” broke onto the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts at number 77 and entered the Sound Scan US top selling singles charts at number 17. On the heels of the single, FUNKtional Family has followed with a break onto Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, and is now at iTunes. Both jocks and listeners are jumping on the undeniably sultry “Back And Forth” and its illustrious b-side “Don’t Wanna Be.” At radio, early believers included Kiss 106.9 FM (Alexandria, LA), Hot 107.7 (Birmingham, AL), and The Beat 92.7 (Jacksonville, FL).

More than 350 retail outlets have picked up the album FUNKtional Family, with coverage growing weekly. Retail support includes in-store play, listening booths, and prominent placement. "Every member of this group is talented to the point of perfection. The vocals & instruments were so tight and yet smooth, my attention was captured throughout the CD," states Selekto Steve of Select-O-Hits Distribution.

Becoming one of UK’s mega soul bands Unified Tribe’s FUNKtional Family has made a major stir abroad. The album is receiving airplay on BBC Radio1 and that station’s Trevor Nelson says it all with, “This album is mental!” The Album has hit number one on the three largest independent charts in the UK - the Blues & Soul Hiplist, Street Soul Chart, and Solar Radio Sweet Rhythms Chart - the only record of 2006, of any genre, to top all three charts. Blues & Soul Magazine says it is "arguably the hottest soul/R&B album around, with heavy airplay from the UK’s leading soul DJs. A must for lovers of the soulful groove." Additionally, FUNKtional Family has outsold all other import soul releases of the season.

FUNKtional Family is Unified Tribe’s most soulful album to date. From smooth mid tempos that deal with the trials of relationships, to upbeat mood transforming cuts like “Happy Go Lucky”; the album takes you on a rich emotional journey.

Putting the funk in “FUNKtional” is what Unified Tribe does best. Heavy hitting bass and brass driven tracks like “That Beat” and “Get the Funk” clearly pay tribute to the Tribe’s funk ancestry. With its current momentum, FUNKtional Family is sure to be Unified Tribe’s biggest release yet, as it helps to usher in the return of real music to radio and mainstream venues…the new old school.

About Unified Tribe
Unified Tribe is a classy, Funk/ R&B band with New York and L.A. roots. The band is a throwback, in both size and sound, to the days of Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly & The Family Stone.

The Tribe is anything but industry-formulated, and it’s their true musicality that first hooks fans. With a core that’s been together for over twenty years, their strong relationships form the perfect foundation for the potent sound in their music. Newcomers and industry veterans show an appreciation for what they have to offer. "Unified Tribe is the badest band on the planet. If history repeats itself, then Unified Tribe is the next Earth, Wind and Fire," states R&B group The Whispers. Howard Hewett, formerly with Shalamar, adds to that sentiment. "I went to their studio and left with my mouth wide open...These cats are bad!"

Their production company, Magic Muzik Productions, Inc., comprised entirely of band members, has produced and worked with such R&B and jazz veterans as Earth, Wind & Fire, The Whispers, The Manhattans, Phil Perry, The Rippingtons, George Duke, and Nia Peeples.

At home, both in the studio and on stage, the Tribe’s originality comes across in any setting. Fans and industry aficionados alike often comment on the live show far surpassing any expectations. Unified Tribe, a micro-cosm of what the world could be.

There will be several other Christian and Inspirational artists there that will be apart of this event. Expect to hear great music, spoken word and be blessed in the process.

Reviews
June April's 'What Am I?' is possibly one of this year's most ambitious and original independent Soul album's out of the many hundred's that come in to the U.K each year.
Feel the Soul Magazine - United Kingdom – M. Daniel

-"Sassy, … and smart, with a voice as clear as a church bell: June April's vibe is heavenly. Her positive message merges easily with oh-so-hip production, and the result is an inspirational take on jazz coolness that will get your head nodding and fill your heart with promise.
Rafe Gomez CD101.9/ WQCD - New York City - Host/DJ
The Groove Boutique nationally syndicated cool jazz

June April has become a uniquely identifiable entity. incapable of being confined to a single genre. We have witnessed her ability to uplift an audience and enfold all of it's members in music.
B. Donaldson, Jazz Improv Magazine - New York

Her voice is pure and clean as purified water. June April is an unique artist with a equally individual sound. She is a jazz singer with a spiritual slant.

Raleigh to Detroit Sets You Free...

Raleigh to Detroit sets you free even if y’all don’t know The Half

Hello Friends,

Big-ups to RALEIGH, NC. On my first visit last weekend, I had such a great impression. We played the lovely Riv Lounge with original paintings on the wall, and a crowd of truly chill, lovely and enthusiastic new fans. On the bill with Yahzarah and Wade 3 Project, I was certainly in great artistic company. I especially fell for Yahzarah – y’all, go see her live it will knock your socks off. She is a true artist. Thanks to Gabriel Rich of Starchild 7, for bringing me down, and thanks to his boys James, Kelvin, and the rest.

Shakespeare once said "The blog's the thing" - So ahead of his time. Utter genius. Well, everyone's got Web 2.0 on their tongues and on the brain and the website is becoming almost old hat. Everyday there are new methods of promoting brands and art and newer tools to help make lives easier with obtaining the exposure necessary to achieve mainstream appeal and success. Is it getting easier-- on one hand-- the artist has the upper hand--- on the other-- us industry vets and new schoolers coming up have to stay constantly abreast of everything available and be open to the changes and growth ahead. Very exciting times indeed but let's be kinder to ourselves and our planet!

Got to give kudos to my girl Roxy Cotton. Once again she's on the cutting edge of culture. This time it's Cocktail Culture. The new trend in lifestyle and it's popping. Roxy debuted her Oxy Cockails with Svedka Vodka this past Monday at Sway. Heard it was a huge success and only the beginning of Roxy's Cocktail extravaganzas. Her Carrot Drop and Cottontini's went down smooth from what I hear. There will be many more signature drinks. And speaking of Cocktail Culture--- The newly designed Renaissance Hotel in Times Square did a sneak preview VIP Party to show off their cutting edge new look and transformation and a taste of the new Restaurant Chop Suey. Entertainment was provided by the lovely Si*Se. Cocktail Culture was in full force as The Renaissance flew in a UK chap who is one of leading creators in this lifestyle of fruity drinks. I'm living proof. I pretty much tried them all. You can check out the Youtube link to see what I'm talking about. This all took place last Thursday. Renaissance Cocktail Culture

Have to shout out my boy P.O and LiveNDirect for another fresh show. This time it's Ghostface Killah, Tony Starks, Rakim Allah and Brother Ali backed by the Rhythm Roots All Star Band! This Friday Nov 16 At The Nokia Theatre!! Ticketmaster Peter Oasis also manages Roxy Cottontail. Making moves-- I'm sorry I can't check this one out. I'm on my way to Detroit....

I'm off to Detroit for a very big 4 day Soul weekend. I've been waiting a long time for this. A few of my artists have been nominated for awards. Soultracks Reader's Choice Awards. Let's wish Anthony David, Maya Azucena and everyone else who was nominated wish them great success. The awards show is being held at The Riverfront Ballroom at The Cobo Center. Produced in part by Jodine's Corner and Mosaic Thump. I'm going to be presenting an award along with Nina of Fusicology for 'Song of The Year'. Performing at The Awards is Maysa, Phil Perry, Maya Azucena, Gordon Chambers, Conya Doss, Eric Roberson and Kloud 9. Many acts have confirmed attendance including Rahsaan Patterson, Melissa Young, Abby Dobson, Carmen Rogers and more.. Friday, November 16th at Riverfront Ballroom- COBO CENTER After Party at Jazz Cafe.

The Urban Organic Festival is in its 6th year and this one proves to be its biggest yet. Founded by soul maven and Detroit's finest promoter Drake Phifer- this weekend is filled with concerts, workshops, jam sessions, film screenings, and panels. Saturday, November 17th is the very much anticipated 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' hosted by Amp Fiddler. Performances by Roy Ayers, Anthony David, Melissa Young, Kloud 9, Alison Crockett and others- MOCAD - 8:00PM- Midnight

I GOT SOUL has announced dates for 2008. June 13-15th in Dallas, TX. Get ready....I attended the first one this year endorsed by Erykah Badu and produced by Neo Soul Cafe. Where Soul Meets The Biz. All I can say is the organizers are strong sisters uniting from across The U.S with a desire and passion to put Soul Music on top- where it needs to be. Save the Date:
Southern Soulstress Melissa Young is continuing to shine and make an impact across the Globe with her charm, grace and dynamic stage presence. Her inviting and warm vocals make you think of a cool summer breeze and a hot smoking night wrapped up in a recipe of Southern Fried Soul. Delectable. Her debut 'Just up the road' is having early success as the rave reviews are coming in, the dates are getting booked and the indie retailers and websites can't keep the music on their shelves. All good early signs and gearing up for a full-fledged release in January '08. Dates coming up in Detroit NY on December 15th at Frank's Lounge Key Club, NJ Raleigh, NC and other Cities near you coming soon. Check out JamNow

The first single/video 'Just a Girl' is being shot in NY. Europe tour is planned for early Spring.
This 3 piece is Funk, Rock, Hip Hop, and pure contagious melody and hooks and they're called METERMAIDS and there aren't any maids in this outfit. Let by 2 MC's- Sentence and Swell along with the zigga zigga turntable wizardry of DJ Space Caboose. These boys are no joke. The last show they did was at Knitting Factory with Dante Ross and Brand Nubian. Heard a kid died at that show-- O.D'd. Crazy. The next show is at Knitting Factory with Akrobatik on Thursday, November 29th. They just did ' The Loft' with Woozyfly and East Village Radio. Look for big things.

I'm representing Metermaids and Karina Nistal at MIDEM in January. You've heard me talk about Karina Nistal before. She's very talented and just came back from 3 weeks in The Middle East with Rebel Crew on tour and they're all amped!

Lots to intake this week but then again this shouldn't surprise you coming from The Bloom Effect. It's about THE BLOOM. Creating The Bloom and Building The Buzz. As always- please check my blog-- The Bloom Blog The Bloom Blog I have great contributors-- my 'younger' voice-- Miz Metro and Karina Nistal. Tune in to my website at The Bloom Effect for updates and events. I'm about to launch my web channel with Sandboxtv.com called The Bloom Box. Sandbox TV After Detroit I'm off to London. My RockNRoll Granny needs me. Until next time. Fiona B

MICHAEL ARENS’ SOUL TRAIN!!! New Online-Mag!!! ENGLISH VERSION further down!

ENGLISH VERSION further down!

Das Magazin-Motto „Your monthly Mag for Soul, Funk, RnB, Smooth Jazz & Urban Grooves” spricht dabei eine deutliche Sprache.

Dennis Rollins awarded Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Doncaster

Award winning UK jazz star
Dennis Rollins
has been awarded
Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Doncaster

This honour is the highest award the Borough can bestow, and one which you richly deserve. You have contributed much to our society and touched the lives of so many people
Martin Winter, Mayor of Doncaster

On Tuesday 19 February 2008, in a ceremony at Mansion House, Doncaster, Dennis Rollins will be given Honorary Freedom of the Borough in recognition of his successful musical career and for his role as an inspiration to Doncaster's musical youngsters (further details TBA).

Multi-award winning British jazz star, Dennis Rollins is well-known on the British and international jazz scene, celebrated for his versatility and unique approach to the underrated trombone. His mighty sound can be heard to full effect in his award winning band Badbone & Co’s repertoire of groove-based, funky dance music with jazz overtones. Badbone & Co won the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best Band last year, and Dennis picked up the Marston’s Pedigree British Jazz Award for Best Trombonist. Awards this year include best Trombonist of the Year at both the British Jazz Awards and the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards, plus nominations in the Urban Music Awards and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

Born in 1964 in the Midlands to Jamaican parents, and raised in South Yorkshire, Dennis cut his teeth at the age of 14 studying and performing with The Doncaster Youth Jazz Association. After years of study, Dennis moved to London and began playing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) and the legendary all-black jazz big band The Jazz Warriors. Over the years, Dennis, now based in Doncaster, has established a reputation as an artist of excellence and has lent his unique and stylish talents to some of this country's, and indeed the world's, top jazz and pop personalities such as Courtney Pine, Baba Maal, Jamiroquai, US3, Brand New Heavies and Blur.

Dennis is also recognised as an effective and inspirational educator. His Rhythms of Fire project won the 2006 Arts & Kids Award, part of the regional Arts & Business Awards. Rhythms of Fire was a commission from Doncaster’s first annual HotHouse Festival and involved 180 children from Doncaster primary schools producing poems on the theme of ‘hot’. The poems were then used by Dennis to inspire a suite of compositions.

Dennis Rollins' Badbone & Co has released three critically acclaimed albums: Badbone, Make Your Move, and last year’s Big Night Out! which is classic Dennis Rollins, but with extra funk.

Dennis is currently touring Europe with The Maceo Parker Band and they will be performing selected dates in the UK in Spring 2008.

    Courtney Pine wins UMA

    British jazz legend
    Courtney Pine OBE
    wins
    Best Jazz Act
    at
The Fifth Annual Kickers Urban Music Awards 2007

Pine maintains his pivotal and inspirational role at the forefront of British jazz
    Blues and Soul

The UK's most important jazz instrumentalist
    Observer Music Monthly

At a star-studded award ceremony on Saturday 3 November 2007, saxophone legend Courtney Pine OBE picked up his second Urban Music Award for best jazz act. Held at New Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden, the UMAs, now in their fifth year, were hosted by Radio 1 DJ Ras Kwame, and neo soul heavyweight Terri Walker. Nominees and winners were chosen, and voted for, by the public, with over 120,000 votes registered this year.

No one better embodies the dramatic transformation in the British jazz scene over the past 20 years than Courtney Pine. His debut album, Journey To The Urge Within, released on Island Records in 1987, was the first serious jazz album ever to make the British Top 40, notching up sales to qualify for a silver disc. It was a remarkable achievement in British jazz history and established Courtney Pine as the leading figure in the British jazz scene and an inspiration to many young black musicians. His seventh album, Modern Day Jazz Stories, released on Verve in 1995, was a Mercury Music Prize Album of the Year, and earned him MOBO awards in both 1996 and 1997. Courtney’s most recent album, Resistance, his 11th, was dubbed by Jazzwise magazine ‘the best Courtney Pine album in the story so far’.

In addition to his recording career, Courtney is a renowned presenter and broadcaster, having presented programmes for both TV and radio, including his acclaimed specialist jazz show, Courtney Pine's Jazz Crusade on BBC Radio 2. Other career highlights include: performing at Nelson Mandela’s 80th birthday concert at Wembley; his musical directorial debut on the BBC’s Windrush Gala Concert, performing his own arrangements with an all-star line-up at the televised ceremony in London; and composing and performing the soundtrack to the BBC’s definitive two-part documentary on Nelson Mandela, Mandela – A Living Legend.

In recognition of his career to date and his contribution to the black community and jazz music, Courtney was awarded an OBE in the 2000 New Year’s Honours. He has also been honoured with a Gold Badge Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, and a Fellowship to The Leeds College of Music. In December 2005 he was also made an honorary doctor of music by the University of Westminster in London.

Other UMA winners included: Lemar, Best Album; Nathan, Best R&B Act; N-Dubz, Best Garage Act; Dizzee Rascal, Most Inspiring Act; Just Jack, Best Crossover Chart Act; Natalie Williams, Best Music Video; Cameo, Best Underground DJ; and Choice FM, Best Radio Station. Outstanding Achievement Award went to Gabrielle; UB40 picked up the Lifetime Achievement accolade.

    "WINES & SPIRITS - INTOXICATING R&B
(Patterson's) stirring funk workouts and laid-back ballads are fresh takes on a vintage soul sound. In an era of microwaveable hits, Patterson shows that jams are still tastiest when made from scratch."
