Key of Gee E-Zine Review

Here's a review form the Urban Organic Festival...

...Crockett was in Detroit for the Urban Organic Weekend. When I interviewed her... I thought OK - she is a nice quiet, laid-back...

But, wow when Alison walked on stage to sing - girl friend morphed into this energetic Diva... Everyone that came after her, had step up their vocal game - cause she brought it.

Greetings!

OK, it's March now. Can you believe the time has moved so fast?! We're working hard on the next recording which is on the horizon...I was just working on the last song...it's a masterpiece...atleast to me. Just you wait...

This spring I have a some things happening as I finish up this new record. I'll be doing my first gig in Virginia with my road dog "chickenologist", John Bibbs. I'll also be putting my teaching hat on, giving a workshop in Maryland about the workings of Jazz voice. Fascinating stuff the voice is...atleast to me.

I have some dayes coming up around the country so if you haven't seen me in your town, don't give up on me....

With Much Love,
Alison

Calvin Richardson Returns!

Let me know if you can post the streaming audio of his first single, "Sang No More" from the upcoming album "When Love Comes" dropping May 24th on Shanachie:
Calvin Richardson, well known to his legions as "The Prince Of R&B," is one of the finest true soul singers to emerge during the past decade. His last album, "2:35 AM," easily debuted on the Top Ten of the Billboard R&B albums chart cementing his place as one of the genre's leading men. Calvin also scored with "More Than A Woman," his duet with Angie Stone from her acclaimed "Mahogany Soul" album, as well as his guest vocals on Raphael Saddiq's "Instant Vintage" album and Pieces Of A Dream's "Ahead To The Past." He also appeared on the soundtracks of such films as "Bringing Down The House" and "Go To The Club," further exposing his unique sound and delivery to a widespread audience.
Calvin's Shanachie debut "When Love Comes" is Calvin's follow-up album to "2:35 AM" and is clearly his finest artistic statement yet as a recording artist. He displays his deep-soul roots on an original set of sexy and romantic tracks aimed squarely at his sizable, largely female fan-base. Standout cuts include "Sang No More," "Sexy Love" and his ode to fatherhood "Daddy To My Kids."
"Sang No More," the first single, will be worked to Urban AC radio nationally creating surefire exposure for this dynamic project. There will also be a video for "Sang No More" that will be serviced and worked to BET, BET-J,VH-1 Soul and all appropriate video outlets nationally, including You Tube, iTunes etc.
Calvin has established a national touring profile, playing with such artists as Reuben Studdard, Raphael Saddiq, Angie Stone and many others. He will be supporting the release of "When Love Comes" with live performances nationwide.

Global Soul scene explodes @ LIBATION

Dear Friends:
In April 2006, Tea Party Music (the record label that brought us the dance floor classics "Life Start's Today" and "Theorema Del Faya") and Manchildblack (recording artist of the West End Records joint "Rain" and promoter of the long running ALMA NYC party) joined forces to create an event that is now considered the Mecca of NYC's Global Soul Culture, LIBATION. Every second and fourth Thursday of the month resident DJ Ian Friday digs deep in the crates of his eclectic collection to explore the multi-dimensional sounds of this music and invite all to dance, shout and exalt in its majesty! Global Soul is a form of dance music deeply rooted in the rhythms of the African Diaspora. With influences from Africa, the Caribbean, South and Central America, it is a music that celebrates the rich history of a people and their culture.

Currently held at the infamous LES nightspot, Sapphire Lounge,
LIBATION is an event that gives its patrons a full course of aural and visual stimulation. As Ian keeps the dance floor in a frenzy, guests are treated to the agile moves of world renown dance collective and LIBATION hosts, Afro Mosaic Soul. The party's artist-in-residence is none other than MTV Art Battle Winner, Concep, who along with his crew, Collaborative Arts Project, is always on hand to paint live on canvass or even on the body parts of willing participants. LIBATION has even exhibited the stunning photography of nightlife provocateur, Human, and Jae of Moon Rising NYC. In only two years of existence, the party has also had the pleasure of presenting some of Global Soul's most influential and well respected DJs and performers including: DJ Spinna, Rich Medina, Karizma, Eric (Erro) Roberson, Stephanie McKay, Wunmi, Sara Devine and even legendary DJ/producer, Osunlade.

LIBATION will host two events at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami, and have plans for a huge anniversary bash in New York this April 24th, featuring a special live performance by the exraordinary performer, Peven Everett, and his band. LIBATION and it's organizers are definitely ones to watch this year as their event - and Global Soul movement of which they are a part of creating - continues to expand and grow worldwide.
Kind Regards,

    GUEST "NOVIO" DJ DISCO WIZ!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    LADY OSOFLY//
Lady OsoFly is a Brooklyn-based collaboration between singer/songwriter Jessica Van Niel (Jae V), and her smooth vocal styling along with Yarrow Lutz of the Feelmore Rocks Crew, an all woman Hip Hop collective based in the Bay Area (CA) representing the various elements of Hip Hop culture. Jae V and Yarrow have been working/performing together for over five years and have been featured at numerous events and venues from San Francisco to Brooklyn. Lady OsoFly is currently in the studio working on their debut album utilizing a unique blend of soul, Hip Hop, folk, and jazz.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    FEMI SHIRI //
Entering the music scene with soulful beats and beautiful vocals like a latter-day Billie Holliday, singer/songwriter Femi Shiri is rebirthing the movement of soul music. Having been described as “one woman band,” this Linden, New Jersey native has worked with many notable producers including Jersey City native Shea Taylor, who has produced such hits as "When You’re Mad" by Ne-Yo and "Beautiful" by Ruben Studdard. Aside from writing, you can catch Femi’s vocal performance at such hotspots as SOB’s Sol Village in New York City or singing background for several independent R&B artists. She’s also currently working on her first solo album. Her tunes are memorable and her lyrics thematically cover topics of love and relationships.

Visit Femi Shiri online to learn more!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    MISNOMER(S) //
Knewdles and Sos are unusual sisters. Though they are of marriageable age, they choose to live with each other and bang out hip hop together in their brownstone apartment in Bed-Stuy, BK. Knewdles, the younger, louder, and taller sister, is the rapper and producer. Though far from a battle rapper, Knewdles is known for her impressive command over crowds, aggressive flows, and breath control. Sos, the still loud, still tall, still young older sister, is the violinist and co-producer. Her voice melds classical with hip hop with jazz, creating music that defies a need for genre identification. With such agile fingers and achingly rich tone, it's no wonder that Sos has blessed the music of Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Alicia Keys. Since their group formation two years ago, Knewdles and Sos have performed over forty live shows from Philly to NYC, made national television and radio appearances, and recorded their self-produced debut album.

Visit Misnomer(s) online to learn more!

STEPHANIE McKAY w/ sp. guest MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO

    Produced By Jill Newman Productions

WHAT: Singer Stephanie McKay wears many hats, and thus far in her young career, her credits run the gamut from jazz artists such as Roy Hargrove and his RH Factor Project to hip-hop artists Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Yet McKay’s most impressive output is the work she’s done under her own name, beginning with her debut CD in 2003 titled “McKay”, and an EP released in late 2007. As we await her 2008 release, McKay will appear with fellow soulstress and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello at the Blue Note, 131 W. 3rd.

    WHEN: Monday, March 24, 2008;
    Two Sets @ 8pm & 10:30pm, nightly

WITH: Stephanie McKay (vocals), Meshell Nedegeocello (bass, vocals), John Deley (keyboards), Manny Laine ( drums), Eli Menenez (guitar), Patrick Andriantsialonina
    (bass)

    COST: $20 @ table / $10 @ bar

Living in the post-millennium era of bootylicious videos and plastic grooves, the death of soul music has been greatly exaggerated. Bronx, NY native Stephanie McKay has managed to garner international praise from critics and fans alike with her powerful urban poetics, which effortlessly combine soul, hip-hop, funk and rock. Known from touring the world with the Brooklyn Funk Essentials and having performed with the likes of diverse artists such as Roy Hargrove, Kelis, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Tricky, in 2003 Stephanie McKay teamed up with producer Geoff Barrow of Portishead for her debut CD.

Released in the UK, the album immediately garnered the praise of music critics over the pond. The Guardian raved that Stephanie McKay's debut was "resurrecting the passion and pride of politically conscious and eternally lovelorn ladies of late-1960s, early 1970s soul, McKay shines bright," while MOJO boasted Stephanie McKay is "extraordinarily eclectic" and her album was "...a coherent artistic statement and definitely worth investigating."

Her fall 2006 self-titled EP (Astralwerks) marked McKay's US debut. Containing 5 songs, the EP included tracks from her forthcoming release, "Tell it Like it Is," as well as tracks from her first album. American audiences finally got a taste of what UK fans have been praising for some time. And to experience Stephanie McKay live is the real treat. Her performances are pure passion. She is dynamic, soulful and full of showmanship. Not to be missed!

Impossible to pin down, endlessly inventive, and possessed of an encyclopedic array of grooves, singer, songwriter, and bassist extraordinaireMeshell Ndegeocello has spent the 10+ years of her musical career upturning conventional wisdom. Though her greatest chart success was a duet with grain-rocker John Cougar Mellencamp on a cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night,” her profoundly deep bass tone makes her an in demand player with artists as diverse as the Rolling Stones, Herbie Hancock, and Madonna.

Born in Germany in the late ‘60s, Ndegeocello honed her musical chops in Washington D.C.’s well-established go-go scene (a subgenre of funk that features heavy drumming and audience call-and-response) throughout the late ‘80s before releasing her debut album, Plantation Lullabies, in 1993. She was the first female bassist to win “Bassist of the Year” from Bass Player Magazine and has been nominated for nine Grammy awards.

Ndegeocello’s latest release is an album titled “The World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams.” The New York Times called her band “a continuing, changeable experiment, balancing between pop-song structures and jamming.” In fact, “her presence is mercurial, and everything she sang or played on electric bass was rapturous, implying groove and melody without making it explicit.”

    ALMA NYC :: DJ True's B-Day Celebration :: Friday!!!

    Friday, March 21st
    10pm - 4am

    Joann Jimenez & Manchildblack present...
    ALMA's Neo-Brasilian Fusion
    residents:
    DJ True & Miller Cruz

A Classic Deeper Than Disco Birthday Tribute
    to DJ True!

    Special Guest
    Manny Santana (Home Party)

In celebration of DJ True's birthday and in tribute to the days of his "Deeper Than Disco" radio show (which aired 8 years strong on WHCR FM and partly on Sirius Satellite Radio), the ALMA crew bring you a night of classics unlike any other. We're talking loft, funk, soul, afrobeat, salsa, house and everything in between we love to dance to. We don't know how old this cat is, but we do know he was a member of the Paradise Garage (that already dates you, dude) and has been dancing his ass off in clubs ever since. Joining him will be DJ Manny Santana (who's been dancing even longer), resident DJ of the last known "rent party" in NYC, cleverly named "Home Party". This boogie down in The Bronx has the sound, aesthetics, and genuine feel of a classic house party. Even the most knowledgeable DJs in the biz are going to keep a pen at bay for this one, as they are said to be joined by the most advent record collectors in the city playing the real "rare grooves" of old and then some.

Brazilian music lovers have no fear; there will be plenty of tropical rhythms throughout the night from Miller Cruz and all their invited guests. Hosts Joann Jimenez and Manchildblack will be on hand as always keeping this extra sultry dancefloor as cool as the sounds that make this party unique. Expect an audience that is serious about their music and serious about their dancing, along with the usual party nuts that keep this soiree too much fun for words. UB1 Music PR - US Super Duo Mary Mary Return To The UK

    $Account.OrganizationName
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    March 18 2008

    Press Release
US Super Duo Mary Mary Return To The UK Mary Mary He Lives Concert

Sent by UB1 Music on behalf of He Lives.

US major recording Gospel artist Mary Mary is set to make a return visit to the UK with a headline appearance at He Lives, a Gospel concert to be held on Sat 26 April at the De Vere Whites Hotel 'Premier Suite' in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

The hit making sister-duo is no stranger to the UK mass-market having stormed the UK Singles Chart with their global hit "Shackles (Praise You)" back in 2000. That song and many other hits of theirs like "Believer", "The Real Party" and "Can't Give Up Now" will be performed by the ladies who are currently preparing for a new album release (their fifth) due out this summer 2008. The last time Mary Mary wowed UK audiences was as part of the RCA Records-organised Gospel Gathering UK event in November 2007 alongside their US counterpart Kirk Franklin plus key UK acts.

Similarly this time, a selection of carefully-picked UK Gospel acts will add the additional flavour to the evening's proceedings guaranteeing fans being spoilt for choice. Harp provides the Gospel base for the evening bringing their trademark choir sounds by singers who are regulars to the limelight having toured with some of the biggest names in the Gospel industry including Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurkin and Byron Cage. In keeping with that big-voice feel, London's Roger Samuels (Oasis Award 2006 winner) will grace the stage with a voice who many within the industry are describing as the next major thing.

Other UK highlights come from the new sector of UK Gospel music, the more urbanised sounding acts. There's Mighty 'n' Seyi - a singer/rapper double who in the last six months have scored a number of great media scoops including winning Sony BMG's Gospel performance Talent Search, winning the annual Star Awards talent search, not to mention also being handpicked for leading Hip Hop/R&B station Choice FM's 'Fresh Blood' event. Adding a more Hip Hop element will be MOBO 2007 Award winners GForce and those into Reggae/Dancehall music will be captivated by the dynamic performer that is Birmingham's Witness.

All the confirmed acts for He Lives, an event now in its fourth year, are taking part in an initiative supported by Calvary International Church in Manchester. He Lives was first launched in 2005, pioneered by the current director Bolaji Olatoye, and has enjoyed a successful run in some of Manchester's renowned live music venues: Manchester Carling Academy (2006) and last year in the Manchester Apollo Theatre. He Lives has now established itself as one of the leading Gospel events company in the Northwest of England.

    SXSW bound. Artists, Parties, Networking

    To my Friends and Fam

So MIDEM came and went and I promised you all a wrap up and post MIDEM so here it is in brief. The artist on everyone's lips was Santogold. The buzz deal - 360's. Everyone talking about them but figuring out they're not all that healthy to do. Jumpstyle- discovered a new artform. Pretty cool. It originates from Belgium and I met the lad himself who started the craze. Patrik Jumpen. Fans getting more involved in artist's careers. Taking more responsibilities and getting compensated. Fan Promotion Websites selling songs of their favorite artists through playlists and the fan gets commissions. Peter Gabriel's 'Personality of The Year' Award. Paul McGuinness (U2's manager) with his amped up Anti-ISP Speech. A2IM Pavillion. Ok Ok I'm going to join soon I promise. I must say that they are slowly taking over and a viable force for the Independent world and a much needed resource. Their booth was buzzing full of meetings, their members exchanging and networking, their receptions, cocktail hour and more.

The MUSIC- The really hot Italian instrumental marching band FUNK OFF that was playing through the exhibition aisles daily. That was refreshing. Lastly, the few acts I saw that were hot. Astrid Swan (Finland) Dennis Ferrer. Little Louie Vega . Seven(Switzerland) . Sadly I missed this one but was most excited to see- German group and my fave fave label Sonar Kollektiv Christian Prommer's Drumlessons. . I collected over 200 CD's from around the world. I finally finished listening to them all so for a round up of my faves out of that pile please check out The Bloom Blog

SXSW looks absolutely insane this year. I thought last year was zany. I'm going to have to stock up on Emergen-C, Red Bull, Aspirin, Ginger, and Ricola's for sure. Attendance must be up by far and from what I hear- there are way more International folks coming in from places like S.America, Australia, Korea, and more than ever from Europe and UK. So the contingency on the International level is amazing! I'm speaking on a panel on Wednesday. That's where you'll find me. March 12th at Noon called Press, Publicists and Bloggers. A good friend of mine overseas has told me though it's SOLD OUT. I'd try and get in somehow. Everyone wants in on this subject. You can check out Fusicology's blog and my blog tomorrow/Thursday for my round up on what's hot in terms of artist showcases, parties and overall buzz. SOUL Music is really prominent this year. Very excited to be part of this hopefully growing movement at SXSW. 3 SOUL showcases with special thanks to Matt Sonzala, ME Television, I GOT SOUL, Smooth, Fusicology and of course to all the artists who are involved. Let's make this HUGE!!

Here's the low down on SOUL at SXSW. Wednesday, March 12th at Molotov Lounge. Thursday, March 13th at Prague Saturday, March 15th at Victorian Room at The Driskill Hotel. All involved are: Maya Azucena, Yahzarah Purple St. James, Russell Taylor, Melissa Young, Renee Sebastian, Jennifer Johns, Choklate, Heavy, Karina Nistal, IB3, The Bamaz, Lady Lux, J*Davey, Kam, Miz Metro, Rachel Brown and others.

There's also an URBAN MEET and GREET on Thursday, March 13th 4PM -7PM at Logan's - 200 E. 6th Street presented by Imeem, Foundation, Spectre and BMRG. On the wheels-- Statik Selektah. DJ Eleven. DJ Graffiti.
British Rapper SWAY returns to SXSW. He blew minds back in '06 so get ready for some more fire! Sway is Lupe Fiasco's favorite lyricist. His fans are far and wide including Chamillionaire, Akon and others. Known for his rapid acrobatic lyrical flow combined with fierce, layered infused beats and wicked stage presence- SWAY is going to turn heads, change up the game and bring back excitement in Hip Hop. Get ready to get your mind blown!

Sway is performing at Molotov Lounge on Friday, March 14th- 1:00am.. He's also performing on the BRMG Hip Hop Not Heard on The Radio event on Saturday, March 15th- Firehouse Lounge - 3:00-8PM. And...Speaking on a panel on Thursday called Widening Hip Hop's Global Reach- 2:45-4:00PM.

Before heading to Austin he's in NY performing at The Mercury Lounge on Tuesday, March 11th- 9PM It's a special UK Hip Hop night.
I'm really excited about this new artist HESTON. He's also out of Atlanta. I'm just amazed at how many talented artists reside there. Heston is really special. He's been on the scene a few years performing here and there but hadn't actually released a full length. Well, now the time has come to introduce his debut ' Storyteller'. Heston has an angelic and heartfelt warm fuzzy voice. One of those voices that make you melt. He's also got the looks -- Ladies-- you know what I'm talking about. HESTON has the whole package. He plays guitar, he's smooth, charismatic, talented and lyrically profound. 'Storyteller' raises the hairs on my arms and I get a different experience every time I hear it. Soul/Pop at its finest.

HESTON will be in NY doing promo, press and a few showcases between April 19-24th. He's producing and performing a Bob Marley Tribute at Sugar Hill along with Julie Dexter on Saturday, May 10th. You can get a free download on SOULTRACKS. The song 'Brand New U'. Just a taste of the 15 songs you'll hear on 'STORYTELLER'.

That about wraps things up. Speaking of wrapped- Melissa Young wrapped her video 'Just a Girl' last week. Can't wait to see the final edit and send it off. I will start preparations on my birthday shindig for April and I'm repping Portugese Rapper Sam The Kid so be on look out for him. Got some deals in the makings that I'm not at liberty to talk about and new artists to add to my roster.

Please check out my blog- The Bloom Blog and Miz Metro Mondayz- You'll love it! Other than that--- I need a vacation!!! See you all in Texas!!

Memories Of The Heart raises the bar for soul music and does so without much effort at all. The CD was released a while back, but the music is fresh as ever. In short, Peter Hadar is that dude! Cop the album and let your friends know what they're missing.

Following the success of the launch night, Lifeforce Muzic and BrazenBunch continue their joint tour de force presenting journeys through Jazz, Soul, Folk, and Blues and everything in between. The events highlight the eclectic musical fusions and influences derived from the rich cultural heritage in the UK.
Each night focuses on a lineup of the most innovative of established and
emerging artists and musicians performing their original musical compositions, and provides a unique opportunity to see the artists in an intimate surrounding.
Modern instruments such as the violectra and electronic loopers and traditional instruments such as the kalimba and steel pan will feature during the series of events that show music really has no boundaries.
