Thanks to all who came out to Carl Schurz Park Summer Sounds last month! We had an amazing crowd and were blessed with beautiful weather as we played our music in the breeze overlooking the East River. The park's organization got lots of new memberships as well as a sponsor or two for their beautiful flower beds. If you didn't get a chance to see us there please make it a point to visit this gorgeous cozy corner of Manhattan. You will love it! More news updates soon...
Thanks for reading and hope to see you for La Casita, Love, Martha

One of the artists performing was originally from Ethiopia and lives in D.C called Wayna. I really loved her songs, presence and very powerful words. Can't wait to see more of her. She's going places.

This Swedish/Caribbean sensation is everywhere! Well, everywhere in NY that is. She's had a great run here over this past month....It's not slowing down. Last week at Studio B despite the horrible downpour, and the rooftop shutting down- her birthday was lovely!
Her debut album ' Plethora' on R2 Records is receiving serious accolades and her star is shining brightly. Come see what everyone is buzzing about.
Kissey Asplund is performing here this week. Let's give her a huge send off and show her lots of love before she goes back to Sweden.
Monday at REHAB rocking with Cerebral Vortex. Tuesday at the fabulous Raw Fusion party at APT with Amon, Simbad, OP! and Scribe and.... Sol Village- hosted by Eric Roberson. SOB's on Wednesday, July 30th.

IN THIS MONTHS UPDATE WE BRING YOU NEWS OF A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR AMP, AND FURTHER DETAILS ON AN EXCITING FORTHCOMING ALBUM PROJECT Amp has been selected by a committee of five leading voices in soul music to receive the Heineken Independent Achiever Award this fall in Detroit. The award recognizes individuals in the music industry who possess the virtues of hustle, drive and the power to inspire others through their work in music. A dinner will be held in Amp's honor on August 5th in LA, and Amp will pick up the award in Detroit on September 4th.
THIS AUTUMN WILL SEE THE RELEASE OF A COLLABORATIVE ALBUM BETWEEN AMP AND JAMAICAN REGGAE LEGENDS SLY AND ROBBIE
A new series from the Strut label, Inspiration Information brings together current artists and producers with their musical heroes for a mouth-watering one-off collaboration. "This is monumental for me" says Amp. "I discovered Sly & Robbie through their Compass Point productions with Wally Badarou, all the Grace Jones records, 'Boops' too. I loved the way they experimented with a more ambient direction." The album was recorded at Anchor Studios in Kingston, Jamaica during Amp's recent trip there, and will be released in October. The result is a confident, laid back set that brings a whole new twist to Amp's trademark vocal style: Sly builds innovative digital and live rhythms, Robbie underpins the tracks with solid bass foundations and original generation guests "Sticky" Thompson (percussion) and Dalton Browne (guitar) add plenty of colour. Amp will be over in Europe this Autumn to promote the album, before returning to Detroit to put the finishing touches to his next solo album, set for release in early 2009. Keep checking Amp's website and myspace page for exclusive previews of tracks from the album in the coming weeks.
WANNA BE A PART OF AMP'S STREET TEAM? What with this upcoming album release, more touring and a solo release in the pipeline too, things are really stepping up at Amp HQ. New Interview: Esperanza Spalding
Pinpointed as a musical talent since her early teens, the now 23 year-old Esperanza Spalding has grown from talented Portland-based pupil to college music professor and young emerging artist in little more than 8 years.
Dwele, who is known for his smooth and sensual music, has released his third album entitled, Sketches Of A Man. This brilliant artist is a product of the Detroit sound that is known for its rich musical history and artistry.
Influenced by everything from 80s new wave, gritty hip-hop, seductive soul, and punk, J*Davey has crafted a sound that has had the underground buzzing for years. J*Davey is leading the march into a brand new musical revolution.
We came, we saw, we conquered. Nu-Soul Magazine, Soul Union and the Bloom Effect made history by bringing our Strictly Social monthly to NYC for a one-time event. We are happy to say that the night was a rousing success. Not only did we have close to 300 people show up on a Wednesday night but thevibe was just right, perfectly capturing the scene we have created in LA for a New York audience.
We also are getting lots of press and publicity for our hard work. Urb Magazine posted a story on their site. Click here to read
We'll have more for you in the coming days including exclusive video footage so stay tuned!
Event Coverage: Strictly Social LA w/ Jimi James & Rogiers
Strictly Social began a new chapter with the July 23rd show as the event moved to a new home at Los Angeles' Little Temple Bar. The move proved to be a success with another pair of stellar performances. DJs Milky Wayne, Destroyer and Anthony Valadez (now of KCRW) set the mood for the night with their superb funk and soul selections as the crowd arrived. Yolanda Johnson, who was also showcasing her new jewelry line Beyoutiful by Pilar of Kreative Souls, was our gracious and hilarious hostess for the evening. Rogiers, in town from the East Coast, kicked off the night in style. He performed several tracks from his debut cd Life & Music: All of It, charming the audience with his silky smooth vocals and charisma. This was his first LA performance and we were proud to be able to make it happen.

Strictly Social has emerged as one of the Los Angeles soul scene's most significant new monthly events thanks to a commitment to the concept of "Eclectic Soul Fusion." Resident DJ and founder DJ Destroyer has been working diligently to fuse many styles of soul music into one cohesive night and with Strictly Social he has succeeded. Out of the desire to spread the Strictly Social sound even further, this first exclusive mix was born. The Strictly Social mix recreates the vibe found at the event itself by championing both established and new artists in genres such as neo-soul, progressive hip-hop, and soulful electronica. Acclaimed artists such as Jill Scott, Raheem DeVaughn, Eric Roberson, and Amp Fiddler share the spotlight with up and comers like Rogiers, Jon Bibbs, Jimi James, and Michelle Amador. Mixed live in one take, the Strictly Social mix will give you a taste of what this very special event is all about.

Nu-Soul bridges the gap between the world of R&B/soul and the underground vibes of electronica, the common factor being a grounding in funk, soul and urban lifestyle. Through fascinating articles, engaging interviews, and the latest reviews, Nu-Soul hopes to open minds to the incredible array of soul influenced music available today.

a producing partnership of regional venues presents the 21st century Afro-sounds tour: a very special double bill of African-soaked grooves, rhythms and melodies featuring Kasaï Masaï and Atongo Zimba both touring the UK for the first time Kasaï Masaï ancestral music rooted in the healing power of percussion and chanting
Kasaï Masaï successfully marry a respect for vintage grooves with an overwhelming urge to move the dance floor WOMAD
Kasaï Masaï takes the listener on an energetic journey, adding a funk-fuelled urban twist to the traditional sounds of the remote equatorial villages. Led by voodoo king Nickens Nkoso, the five piece outfit - made up of voice, percussion, guitar, bass, saxophone and drums - combines the healing power of percussion and chanting with the majestic Congolese folk guitar and jazz saxophone. Kasaï Masaï’s plays ancestral music, passed on from generation to generation, and the band’s name reflects its roots: Kasaï is a region of Congo named after a river in the heart of the rainforest where many tribes maintain their traditional lifestyles; the Masai is a dignified tribe whose lives still centre around a nomadic existence. Written in Swahili, Lingala and Kimongo, Kasaï Masaï’s lyrics reflect the cultural diversity of a region where more than four hundred languages are spoken. This tour debuts songs from Kasaï Masaï forthcoming album (title TBA).
Atongo Zimba solo acoustic 21st centuryAfro-fusion from the savannahs of Ghana
a breath of fresh savannah air Songlines
Fela Kuti's Afrobeat inspired Atongo Zimba to leave his birthplace in the savannahs of northern Ghana’s Bolgatanga region and explore the musical idioms of the surrounding regions. Taught by his grandfather to build and play the koliko (or molo), a two-stringed calabash lute, the first songs this African troubadour learned were rooted firmly in tradition, dealing with everyday life in the countryside. The release of his award-winning album, Savannah Breeze, in 2005, brought him to the attention of an international audience, and saw him dubbed ‘the new face of Ghana’s music scene’. His latest album Barefoot in the Sand, released in October 2007, features reworkings of original songs sung in the language of his native Fra Fra tribe.

Review - One for the more broad minded, as this contains an array of different styles, and rather than getting lost in the melange, it pushes barriers, is expansive and broadens outlooks.
That said Baby... You Drive Me Crazy is too rock orientated for my liking. Aside from that though the mix of jazz, blues, reggae, funk, soul and hip hop with a punky edge is organic, dynamic and fresh.
Lyrically too the album is full of consciousness, local and wordly, covering global issues, inequalities and injustices, as well as family life and US politicisms.
God Is So Funky/ Goddess So Funky is moody, mellow hip hop with amusing yet thoughtful lyrics, funky in a Pfunk , Bootsy kind of way. The DJ Moosaka Chung King Remix is also worth checking out.
Keep the Fire Burnin' is the standout track for me, with jazzy funky horns, and a pace bordering on Drum and Bass until it mellows out.
Where We Going? is reggae influenced, haunting melody, with some rock and African thrown in for good measure. Only thing I got is a very nice laid back reggae Dub.
Rude Boy is a fast paced ska track, musically it's Good but vocally a bit messy.
A complex and wide raging mix of styles.
Tracks: - 1 Keep the Fire Burnin' 2 Easy Come 3 God Is So Funky/ Goddess So Funky 4 Baby... You Drive Me Crazy 5 A Woman Named Nina 6 Black Mama 7 Katrina 8 Where We Going? 9 Get Up! 10 Rude Boy 11 Movement 12 Stereotype 13 Still Aint Ready (Dedicated to James Brown & J. Dilla) 14 Be That Way (Live in Concert - Bonus Protest Song)

'Love Changes' perfectly represented all that is Lori Dow: smooth and soulful, beautiful & classy, mature and elegant yet warm friendly and familiar.
To experience Lori for the first time is to experience the joy and wonder that comes from a pleasant surprise or a first kiss. Wonder and surprise are often the first reactions to hearing the depth, range and quality of the voice that emanates from such an unsuspecting source. And just as you move past those initial thoughts, you are immediately enveloped by that same voice, one that is remarkably smooth and melodic yet powerful and demanding at the same time.
A Beautiful voice from a beautiful person: Lori is the owner of an amazing gift that is equally matched by her ability to take songs and arrangements and transform them in such a way that it's hard to image that they could have ever been written with anyone but her in mind. But as gifted a singer and performer as she is, her talents are over-shadowed by the special person that she is. Her energy and presence have been known to immediately brighten a room both on and off stage. Her infectious smile, affable nature and warm personality make you feel as though you've known her for years and instantly make you a fan - even before you ever hear her sing.
Having been professionally trained as a youth herself, Lori now spends considerable time working with and fostering young talent in and around the greater Boston Area, where she can be seen performing regularly. Her live performances are like an amusement ride; filled with audience interaction, frequent impromptu set changes and a playful banter that keeps the audience fully engaged and entertained. Lori is more comfortable on stage than most people are in their favorite pair of jeans.
Lori's debut release, Unconditionally Yours, was for those not familiar with her remarkable live performances, their first introduction to this talented artist. And while it was critically praised and earned her an Urban Music Award in 2006, it only touched the surface of the artistic abilities that were yet to come. Now, back with a new project, Love Changes, Lori presents listeners with blended offerings of soul, R&B, spoken word and gospel, which result in a smooth sophomore release that build upon the foundation solidly laid by Unconditionally Yours.
The best CDs are always the ones where you can just put them in and press play and this is definitely the case with Love Changes. The disc is a collection of slow and mid-tempo grooves that flow seamlessly from one track into the next without disturbing the groove. With 5 tracks on the CD with love in the title, one would have to assume that Lori has Love on her Mind. Guest appearances on the disc include spoken word artist, Omekongo Dibinga, hip hop artist, Omega Red and singer/songwriters Leon Jones from the band Ahmir and Montez Cardwell. And still present, proving to be more than a passing thought is the live instrumentation.
"This time around, the sound is a little different", says Lori. "The foundation of live instrumentation is still there, as well as material that matters, but I've grown and so has my music."
Not many artists still incorporate live instrumentation in their recordings but for Lori, the live instrumentation on her recordings is a holdover from the fact that she is a live performer first, and a recording artist second - a clear break from the dominance of studio artists currently present in the music industry. "There's nothing like the joy of performing for me. I started doing it when I was a little girl and I haven't sat down since" says Lori.
Will be at Organix Soul to rock with us on July 26, 2008.
For those unfamiliar with Ms. Riley, allow us to fill you in…
In a business of here today and gone tomorrow, few artists have maintained the consistency of Cheryl Pepsii Riley. Cheryl, who is affectionately called Pepsii by her friends, exploded onto the music scene in 1988 with her debut album "Me, Myself, and I". This album, unlike most being released during that time, featured songs filled with positive and encouraging messages. From that album, Cheryl recorded her #1 smash hit "Thanks for My Child." This song, considered by many women an anthem of hope and courage, catapulted this Brooklyn, New York native to national and international acclaim.
Along with Cheryl “Pepsi” Riley, we also have the pleasure of being entertained by Ms. Priscilya Marie. A phenomenal singer, songwriter in her own right, Priscilya has a number of tracks currently heating up the airwaves.
Hailing from Inglewood, Zeia, the original Cali girl, (born and raised),has been sharing her voice with the community since she was knee-high to a grasshopper using a blend of old school and new school to take listeners on a journey of character growth. Often comparing herself to the mythical bird of fire, the Phoenix, she has been through many ups and downs in her young life “emerging more beautiful than ever before”. As a survivor, a single mother and a conqueror, she is relatable to all and can truly testify that through the fire, you can emerge more beautiful than before.

Rise began in 1996 as the 'Respect' festival organised by the Trades Union Congress. The message of the festival was always clear - say NO to racism.
Though the message has recently changed, BrazenBunch was booked when the message was still that of anti-racism. Yes we should celebrate the many cultures that we are lucky to have surrounding us but we should never forget that as a people we can move forward and beyond racism which alas still plagues our society, by being united against racism.
Rise is a unique opportunity to see some truly incredible performances at London's biggest free music festival attended by an average of 100,000 people!
BrazenBunch also supports the lengths the festival goes to in order to make it sustainable and environmentally friendly.
There are off-grid power supplies and a big drive to recycle. All of these factors contribute for a festival that works towards benefiting the community as a whole.
All that and great music....
What more could we ask?
We are also at Rise supporting the work of Anti Slavery International who will be there promoting the work they do.
Check out their stall and more details can be found on their website.

Hi Mike,
Fresh from completing the 6th and final night of the hugely successful 'Lifeforce' nights at the Vortex in partnership with Lifeforce Muzic, we turn our attention to something else we love - FREE festivals. There there are an ever increasing number of festivals but not many are for free. We support making music accessible to all people and especially those that are not in a position to attend paid events.
The Rise Festival has a fantastic line up of great music and as London's largest free music event we hope you will attend, to not only enjoy the day, but help support this free festival - just by being there!
