A Note from DDT Entertainment

MARCUS H. MITCHELL - "GO MARCUS"

GUESS WHO WON MARCUS' DANCE CONTEST?

PHOTOGRAPHY BY - DONNA T. STATON

A Message From Gary Taylor

GARY SINGS "DO YOU KNOW"

It's great to be working with a promoter who really loves and understands what she is doing. DDT Entertainment is run by a young, attractive "Woman of Color" (you already know how I feel about Women of Color). She asked me to do one thing in our approach to doing a LIVE date in Fayettville, NC, "Trust Her". As apprehensive as I can be sometimes, I decided to give it a try.

Still this was Fayettville, NC. "Woman of Color" was a huge song here because of a radio programmer named Garret Davis, who was working at WUKS 107.7 FM at the time of the song's release. As I was told (by the owner of The Ambiance Entertainment Center), the song is still getting played in recurrent play today.

DDT Entertainment put a promotion wheel into motion I had never seen the likes of. Not even when I was with A&M or Virgin Records, and these companies are considered Majors. It must feel good when your reputation as a promoter is so good that radio stations and papers and T.V. (yes. there was even a television add put into motion) are calling to be a part of your event.

My thinking was "Are there any people in Fayetteville?" Well as many uninformed city folk (me included) think about small southern towns, I had a lot to learn. FortBragg army base (the largest on the East Coast has over 100,000) has a captive, music loving crowd that love to get out to LIVE shows every weekend. This past weekend had shows going down on Thursday, Friday, and Marcus Mitchell and myself on Saturday, and all 3 shows had there own crowd.

There's also FayettevilleStateUniversity. A very large Historically Black University, with an extremely sophisticated campus full of intelligent, progressive African Americans (not failing to mention the home of WFSS 91.9 FM. a very high profile Jazz station). Pretty much all of the HBCU's down in South have there own radio stations. Maybe that's why music down here is so rich, and true to Black culture.

Wake up big city radio!

The hour came faster than I thought it would and I could hear the crowd going crazy during the Marcus Mitchell show. I was thinking, "How am I going to match that energy?"

My time came and as I was taking to the stage my mind was saying do any of these people know who I am. The applause was loud, and there was screaming from women (my audiences' are about 80% female). As I took the stage I could see tables with 6 here, and 5 over there; Women of Color who came out to hear love songs. They were all smiling and talking to me between songs. The men got in on the action. The next thing I knew people were standing next to their tables slow dancing and swaying to the music. I had only seen things like this in the movies, stories about southern nightclub life.

My band (WaWa LeGrand-guitar, Blues Webb-Drums, Rick Watts-Bass, Benjie Porecki- Keyboards, and Shang- background vocals) was killing it. The crowd was shouting out and talking to them as they did solo's which only made them play even better. I have Debra at DDT Entertainment to thank for this band. She had worked with the Musical Director, WaWa many times before and this group of musicians just loved her. I have to say, I've been doing this music thing for over 28 years and I've never seen this kind of love and closeness between musicians and promoters.

My night closed with me singing "Lovin My People" (my personal Black National Anthem). Every one was up out of their seat partying like it was their job. It was the wildest I have ever seen. A line formed, and people started doing the Electric Slide. I was feeling so good I didn't want to leave the stage.

After the show I was signing CD's and T-Shirts for people. I've never met a more gracias crowd. There were those who had all of my past CD's and were buying the new one's. One fan came up and asked, "f I would sign something special for him"; he handed me a copy of my "Compassion" album in vinyl format. So much for wondering if the people of Fayettville, NC knew who I was.

This was truly one of the best LIVE shows I ever experienced, and I have Debra and DDT Entertainment to thank for this "Smooth Summer Night" of magic.

B.B. Kings New York, October 12th, 2008, get ready!

Stay Blessed

Cherry Bomb's the Rage and Bloom is Buzzing.....

I'm still on a high from the Cherry Bomb NY book party. It was packed to the gills at The Beauty Bar-- I don't think another body could have fit and the line was down the street before doors opened. You'd think it was a record release, a film premiere or some A list celeb event. Bravo to author Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna. I can only imagine it every author's dream to come close to replicating an event like that... Cherry Bomb danced off the shelves and people were lining up to get their copy autographed. Well done!

I think I've fallen in love with books again! Any authors, journalists, writers-- please get at me when you're ready. I'm eager to do it again!! I have the bug!!! Shouts to Village Slum. Photos are up now and you can read my Blog for the wrap up and other shout outs! I must also say--- Fall, 2009- I will be published too -- stay tuned!

In other news- my BLOOM BLOG caught fire and heat today when I posted Jazz Trumpeter Nicholas Payton's entry ' Why I Hate Jazz'. Oh boy- some pandemonium here but I must say his take is quite hilarious.

I'm loving the fact I have diverse and talented artists contributing to The Bloom Blog. It is indeed a blessing. Nicholas Payton. Miz Metro. Elida from Dirty Fuzz. Dred Scott. Kissey Asplund.

Will have a couple announcements of note concerning my blog coming soon so stay tuned. RSS me- Feed me!!! Subscribe to me baby!

This uptown mixer will be dope as musical soundtrack is provided by my friends at Digiwaxx. Yes- they've finally got me sponsoring one of their mixers!!!

Thanks to Nue Agency who's produced this event and partnered us all together to bring you a fabulous time of networking, listening to hot music provided by ENUFF and having tasty treats and loads of drinks.

Well, we are after all kicking off a Labour Day weekend. So come mix with us. Covo Tratoria 701 W. 135th St and 12th Ave- 7PM-Midnight....
This D.C girl is going to bless the mic and stage at the Highline Ballroom this Thursday so NY get ready if you aren't familiar with Wayna.

I became familiar after hosting a Nu-Soul Series show at Franks Lounge a couple months ago- Dare I say- I was impressed - so much so- that we'll be collaborating together in the near future.

Wayna has just released her 2nd album called 'Higher Ground'. Her debut is called 'Moments of Clarity'. I suggest you buy both! They're great...

Come to Highline Ballroom- Wayna is opening for Les Nubians. This will be a treat.. Wayna will also be performing in Atlanta for Strictly Social - Friday, September 12th.
Reviews are starting to pour in for 'Storyteller'-- Heston's long awaited debut release and boy it was certainly worth the wait--- The general feedback is pretty much consistent and in agreement saying it's a brilliant first release with some amazing arrangements, beautiful vocals and stellar songwriting.

You know-- i haven't seen Heston live yet-- can't wait for that day but from I hear from everyone-- he's an amazing live performer. Heston has the full package...

He's in St. Louis this Thursday, August 28th at Napps Vibe Lounge. He was supposed to do an outdoor concert in Birmingham over the weekend but the place got rained out due to the Hurricane. Oh that thing! Birmingham will be re-scheduled!

Heston's album is #1 at Soultracks with regards to sales as compiled by CD Baby, Amazon and some other retailers. He's up for 2 noms.....Best Male Vocalist and Best New Artist. Voting deadline today.

Soultracks Readers Choice Awards take place at Max M Fisher Music Hall on October 3rd in Detroit and yes-- I will be there... If you haven't heard 'Storyteller'- you need to!

You've been hearing her name a lot over the past few months and it' s just the beginning. No more 'Who is April Hill'. Her debut album 'Love 360' has been receiving accolades from wide and far. ..We congratulate her on the 'Best New Artist' nod. She'll be in Detroit...

Her single 'Wanna Be Free' has been floating around the air-waves for a few weeks now and charted on Top 40 on Urban AC. Her gig at The Blue Note last Friday was incredible! She performed to a packed house and her musicians were on fire and she was entertaining, delightful vocally and eased into all the songs like a natural!

She also just performed with Fuzz Band in Norfolk. The reception was tremendous. We have a remix contest coming up and a ring back you're going to definitely want your hand set to have and a lot of major things in the works so stay tuned...
How excited am I to be repping for Brooklyn Academy and their long overdue and very anticipated debut release 'Bored of Education'. Talk about Full Circle! I go way back with these blokes. Back to 3-2-1 Records days when I put out this hot split single that still to this day is considered an 'Underground Classic'.

Skeme Team featuring Non-Phixion and The Arsonists with the split single Pumpkinhead, Word a Mouth(Met and Block) yes- They're here- they never went anywhere but the studio, stayed busy and creatively have mixed and mashed up some incredible songs both musically and lyrically and the guests on this project are ridiculous. Keith Murray, what? Jean Grae, what? And the list goes on....

People- you need to be here at the celebration of their new endeavour- their DEBUT- for so many reasons I can't explain them all here but for the main one-- many many years in the makes and in the works and who says it's not true!! Good things really come to those who wait !! And now the wait is over....

I'm so happy for my boys!!! For Hip Hop we all need to be.....Brooklyn Academy is keeping Hip Hop very much alive in NY....Who says Hip Hop's Dead!

Wednesday, September 3rd Southpaw 9PM Park Slope, BK-- where it all began!!!! They're also doing an in-store at Fat Beats the day before - September 2nd- 5PM-7PM
I got a lot of England in my life right now and this oh so makes me happy...My roots! All the way live from London is the funky soulful dance act- Reel People. Their 2nd album will see the light Stateside- as they ready the release of 'Seven Ways to Wonder'.

Reel People spearheaded by Oli Lazurus of Papa Records fame... Oli will come over to NY for promo and guest DJ appearances sometime in September.

There are 12 juicy tracks on the latest project and a few guests including Darien and Omar... In fact-- I can't stop listening to this album..

Also- a listening party for the 'Seven Ways to Wonder' at Frank's Lounge- Nu-Soul Series- Sept 20th...
Treat yourself to a relaxing escape with like minds- It's the 2nd Annual OWN YOUR POWER RETREAT. Sept 26-27th at Miami Botanical Gardens

This retreat promises to be an empowering weekend. You will enjoy personal development, business and natural healing workshops designed to broaden your vision and bring clarity. A total integration of Body, Mind and Spirit.

Don't miss out.... Tables/booths selling out fast!!!! REGISTER NOW!!! Sadly- I won't be going down there but Simone Kelly tells me there will be an OWN YOUR POWER - NY next year!!!! So stay tuned!!!

I won't be down for Soul Summit but will be there in spirit....Strictly Social- Sept 12th at Djangos.... The line up is fierce!

Shouts to Thomas Paul for interviewing me for Soultracks. The interview is live now and it's juicy and candid....Check it out. Soultracks

I'm speaking at Baltimore Music Conference Sept 20th. Hit me up if you're headed down there.

Shouts to everyone who's digging the blog- thanks for your feedback.... Hit me up on all my social media pages....Find me if you can!!

I can't stop listening to Roy Hargrove's latest ' Earfood'. Especially 'Strasbourg/ St. Denis'. It's been in heavy rotation. I think I've listened to it 50 times...

I just heard a sneak preview of 'Get it Together' - a new Maya Azucena song and it's so timely and it's hot! I'm headed to see Eric Rico this week-- I've heard nuff things about this bad boy!

I'm also super excited about Nicholas Payton and the trio at Jazz Standard featuring Mark Whitfield and Christian McBride. Sept 3-7th. Jazz is back in my life- full circle and I'm happy to have these fine musicians around me.

Lastly- it's not what you think -- It's what you DO! I'm about to do the DO!

Sincerely,

Fiona Bloom

Organix Promotions Featuring Angela Johnson & Friends

You Are Officially Invited to see/hear

Angela Johnson feat. Tricia Angus & Lisala Beatty

Organix Soul - August 23, 2008

For those unfamiliar with Angela Johnson, allow us to fill you in…

Angela Johnson's most recent offering, A Woman’s Touch (2008 Purpose) is a single-producer project that furthers Angela’s evolution as an erudite production talent and continues a legacy of female musician/producers not seen since the pioneering days of Patrice Rushen and AngelaWinbush. Boasting the crème de la crème of soul and R&B, from Rahsaan Patterson and Eric Roberson to Maysa and Julie Dexter, A Woman’s Touch is more than an indie soul project, it is an industry event unseen since the timeless producer albums of Quincy Jones and Norman Conners. When considered alongside a body of work that includes two solo masterpieces and two highly-hailed group projects as the lead singer of the soul-funk band, Cooly’s Hot Box, Angela’s fifth studio release is a revealing testament to the time and commitment Angela has spent honing her multi-faceted skills to a spit-shined perfection. Definitely not the show that you would want to miss!

Unfortunately due to cost increases, we were forced to go up on the ticket prices, we hope that those of you who have supported us for the last two years will continue to do so. If we could avoid this measure we would... THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!

Tickets: 15.00 in Advance / 20.00 at the Door

DC Popular Pages discuss state of Soul Music

Trash Talker or Truth Lover
Hopes Too HighHopes Too HighHopes Too HighHopes Too High
Can you be Confident & Humble at the Same time?

http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/marcell-and-the-truth/

Family,
peter St L.Marcell interviewed with a serious music connoisseur and a frequent face in the DC area Mr. Peter St. Laurent. Peter is a journalist for DC's brightestyoungthings.com. If you don't want it written down don't say it around Peter, lol! Marcell & Peter spent their time talking in historic Mt Vernon, Charles Village, and at a new hot spot Milton's Grill. The time flew as the Aries Men spoke with passion and honesty. Peter wasn't afraid to ask it & Marcell was quick to answer.
You name it - Peter asked it. Marcell tried to hide behind words in some of the question asked but was compelled to just be honest. If he were not so genuine in talking about what he does, Marcell's manner could be mistaken for arrogance. But if you've ever been in the battlefield of any arena or area in life, it becomes clear to you that Marcell really just holds a sober confidence. When Marcell was asked to respond to the interview posted above and below he shared a few words. (Wait, Marcell...a few words? He.)
Hopes Too High"In the Bible some of Moses's family & friends pretty much asked God why he didn't talk to them directly like he talked to Moses. God (paraphrasing of course) basically told them - "...Oh it's simple because you can't handle the truth". They were angry he came to them in clouds only."God said listen when it comes to Moses I can say fix your clothes, deal with your marriage, change this or that, and 'great job keep it up' and he'll embrace me. The rest of you I have to come to you in books with nice covers - 8 steps to this or that, I have to say parables, write poems, and songs because your ego and insecurities make it hard for me to be genuine with you.
God spoke to Moses as a friend, wow, what else is there? Exodus 33:11 I want to be that kind of guy that God could say, "hey Marcell can we talk, I mean really talk?". So I try to keep my heart at a place to love the beauty of the REAL things. Many people hide behind a group, a church. a job, a organization etc... I know I have many times. Churches are great and often needed for encouragement to continue on the path God has laid out. BUT, I'm learning that a group of any kind that is like minded is a privileges NOT a "right". If you need a group to believe in what you know burns in your heart - you don't really believe it yet. I don't do music because I love it. Some days I want to quit. I do music because I believe God called me to do it and more specifically I believe God called me to do it: write, play, sing it the way I'm doing it. I am however always open to do the business aspect better. My confidence comes from God, not man - at least most of the time.
I've been told I'm humble because I don't brag on myself. Well, they may not exactly be true. I've been jokingly and sincerely talking trash for years, from sports to playing cards to hitting sales quotas to comedy battles around the way. There is one thing clear about me: I Want to Win . And in this music game I'm no different. I feel too many artist should simply go home and stop confusing the public on what a song is, a performance is, a show is and/or real passion looks like. People are not stupid they know when they look in your eyes if this is for you or not. They say I Intimidate people sometimes. I never intend for that to happen but I think its because my band (the Truth) and I take what we do very seriously. Sure M&TT jokes around probably more than most. But we are serious about taking care of our fans - people have to wait in long lines at a show, share dirty bathrooms, get someone to watch their children, plan for work the next day, work harder at work so they don't fall behind the next day, budget their week - all to come see you perform and if after all that your performance is nothing more than a Glorified Rehearsal, than to me you disrespected their money and time. But, when M&TT gets on stage, I want you too feel bad that you paid so little to come see us. Why? because you realized the Band & I gave all we had & left it all on stage for you."
In the article below a few people later asked Marcell about the comment he made in say he had no real competition in Soul music. It was asked what exactly he meant, his reply:
Hopes Too High "My response was in jest as usual, but definitely with some sincere undertones. M&TT has done over 300 performances in the past 10 years (at least) and I can say I haven't seen many on levels we have been on so far, who take what they do more serious than M&TT. A few call us higher but most seem to do things half-hearted. My band - I love these guys. I'm surrounded by "Average" musicians that simply make extraordinary music. I'll take them everyday over extraordinary musicians that make average music. Our motto as a band - "One band one Sound"
Now as far as saying that I was bragging, this is how I feel about "Bragging"
If you say you have 5 children and If you have 5 children - it's the truth, it's not bragging, if you are happily married and you say it's true - it's probably not bragging but gratitude I'm sure. And likewise, if you are good at what you do tell the truth. False humility is often exposed when you are over-looked and not appreciated so if you have put in the time, appreciate yourself & your work, as much as you appreciate others. Sure, give God all the glory he is due but encourage yourself for the proper decisions you made. Arrogance to me is statements that are un-proven, un-tested & unfounded but confidence is tested over and over again. A guy says I'm a great fighter but has fought no one to me he's arrogant & very much out-of-touch (maybe crazy, lol), but a boxer says he's great and who has been in the ring with some of the best and proved it time and time again - He's confident - When he says he is probably going to win his next fight. He might have legitimate reason for that, lol"
People ask me? How can you be confident & humble at the same time, is it possible? Sure love the truth about yourself and others.

It was great performing at the Rock & Roll Hotel the other night. The other bands really stretched some of your minds huh? The brother Tamu was a one man show, representing classic hip-hop. You know the kind with no gimmicks & self-destruction. He just handed the DJ his CD and he was off & ready to give it to them. Sean McCardle & his band was more emotion than M&TT can you believe it. You never got used to Sean and his guys. The dynamics were off the change, they never let you get use to them and/or take them for granted. Now, Mlkmachine came out with marching band get-ups, nice! They had the floor filled with people dancing with only a trumpet player, tuba dude, lead singer on an accordion, and & drummer. It was cool and definitely different. But, as always we enjoyed representing the home town of Charm-City. Thanks guys for the chance to share the stage with you. We have to do it again!

Concord Music Group Statement on Isaac Hayes

August 11, 2008

CONCORD MUSIC GROUP’S STATEMENT ON ISAAC HAYES

The Stax Records and Concord Music Group family lost a great friend on Sunday when soul music giant Isaac Hayes died suddenly at the age of 65.

To the world he was Black Moses, Ike The Ripper and, later, Chef from TV's South Park. To the rest of us who had the extraordinary opportunity to work with him in recent years, he was just Isaac. He was humble, unpretentious and refreshingly down-to-earth. Not bad for a man who delivered a record-setting seven #1 albums to the Billboard R&B chart, scored numerous awards (including multiple Grammys and 2 Academy Awards), appeared in over three dozen films and was named a Royal King of Ghana along the way.

In the ‘60s, the Covington, Tenn. native helped define the Stax Records sound, co-writing with David Porter such hits as “Soul Man,” “Hold On (I’m Coming),” “B-A-B-Y,” and “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby” for Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas and Johnnie Taylor, among others.

He took soul music in a new direction with his 1969 album Hot Buttered Soul, which featured expansive re-interpretations of Jimmy Webb’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and Bacharach and David’s “Walk On By.” The music’s impact was matched only by the visual impact of the record’s cover, which featured Hayes’ signature bald head, gold chains and bare chest.

Two years later, his “Theme From Shaft” exploded on the pop and R&B charts, putting him on the map as an artist and icon. The rat-a-tat of that lone high-hat, that cultural-shifting kick of the wah-wah pedal — no other piece of music signaled the true end of the '60s, ushering in the gritty 1970s than Isaac Hayes’ <http://www.concordmusicgroup.com/artists/Isaac-Hayes/> theme from Shaft <http://www.concordmusicgroup.com/albums/SCD-88002-2/>. The song won him not only a Grammy but two Oscars, for “Best Song” and “Best Score” in 1972. That same year he won a Grammy for his double album Black Moses. The hits continued for Hayes throughout the ‘70s.

In later years, Hayes’ career took some other directions. He became the voice of Nickelodeon’s Nick at Nite and later the voice of Chef in the animated series South Park. He had a role in the upcoming movie Soul Men with stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac (who also died this past weekend).

In 2007, Hayes participated in the Stax Records 50th Anniversary celebration shows in Memphis, Austin and Los Angeles. Despite health problems that slowed him down in recent years, he continued to tour the world. He had proudly returned to Stax Records, both as an artist and as an advisor in planning the reactivation of the imprint in 2007 by Concord Music Group. Isaac was also in the process of recording a new album for Stax.

To borrow a phrase from the man himself, he was “one bad mutha.” And through the music he so generously left behind, the world will be talking about him and more importantly listening for lifetimes to come.

Concord Music Group president and CEO Glen Barros states, “Isaac Hayes exemplified all that is Stax. We are all very fortunate to have worked with a visionary who changed music in indelible and profound ways. His talent was matched only by his kindness of spirit. On behalf of the entire Concord/Stax family we express our deep sympathies to his family, friends and fans all over the world.”

Gene Rumsey, Concord Music Group general manager added, “The enduring influence of Stax Records could only have been made possible through Isaac’s brilliant song-writing which laid the ground work for the future generations of rap, hip-hop, and soul. Isaac played a pivotal role in the recent re-launch of Stax, once again infusing the label with his creativity, inspiring a whole new breed of Stax artists. Our condolences go out to all the people whose lives Isaac touched throughout his unparalleled career and lifetime.”

John Burk, executive VP and chief creative officer, Concord Music Group, states, “Isaac had a profound and multifaceted impact on the Stax label, contributing to its legacy as a writer, producer, arranger, studio musician, A&R executive and, of course, one of its most successful artists. Having collaborated closely with Isaac during the past few years, I came to know the man behind the music and his deep love for humanity. He was an extraordinary individual who used his talents to inspire and unite people from all walks of life. I feel tremendously privileged to have had the opportunity to work along side this giant of a man.”

April Hill

A funky, soulful groove pumps hard in the studio. From the low-lit vocal booth we hear a sexy, sultry voice weaving tales of love, life, and inner strength. Caressing each note with tenderness, this sistah takes her time to tell her story.

24-year-old singer/songwriter April Hill is breathing new life into the soul scene. Her unique vocal style and gift with pen and paper is sure to have folk talking about this young Atlanta, Georgia-born talent for a long time.

April Hill, a Howard University graduate, came to New York City and began working as a financial analyst at the prestigious Goldman Sachs investment banking firm. The long hours and fast pace of Wall Street did not keep April from following her dream of becoming a recording artist. With the support of her mother and father, April decided to leave Goldman Sachs and focus her attention on developing her craft as a singer/songwriter.

April quickly caught the attention of soul singer/producer Marlon Saunders. Marlon fell in love with April’s soulful jazzy sound and invited her to share the stage as his opening act on tour. After a sold-out performance at the legendary Blue Note club in New York City, Marlon approached April and her parents about working with April.

The next day, Marlon and April were in the studio writing and recording song demos. It was around this time that the musical director for Ne-Yo phoned Marlon in search of background vocalists for the David Letterman Show. Marlon referred April and she was quickly rehearsing and working out background parts with Ne-Yo. April Hill’s dreams were finally coming true.

After a busy summer of touring, April began to hone her songwriting skills. Marlon and April would spend hours working on material, trading melodies and lyrics until they found April’s groove.

And now this beautiful young artist has delivered LOVE 360, a soulful recording filled with beautiful phrasing, simple and poignant lyrics that will have fans feeling a deep intimate connection with April Hill. April’s unique style combined with the hypnotic funky arrangements of co-producer Shawn Lucas will have soul heads of every generation enjoying LOVE 360.

If you don’t mind a little jazz in your funk, a little heartache with your happiness, and a little poetry with your backbeat, then your search is over….April Hill tells a story worth listening to.

BIG BROOKLYN RED

In 1997, when this native Brooklynite moved to Miami and received his name from Mandrill’s guitarist Tommy Trujillo, the die was cast. He realized at that point, by leaving his familiar NYC to conquer new lands, he was stepping into his destiny.

His resume prior to that point was impressive. As a member of The CityKids Foundation’s repertory company, and later an alumnus, he was able to hone his craft with performances in high schools, prisons, as well as on Broadway and TV with countless celebrities. He performed his first original composition with jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Bra nford Marsalis and then again with the late, great Grover Washington Jr. at age 17.

In 1994 he started his first band "eli &=2 0the bluesound project" and continued sharpening his performance chops while stretching the boundaries of music on the New York scene. After two years, the b and had run its course and Big Brooklyn Red went on to sign a production/management deal. While that particular effort never bore fruit, it gave him the opportunity to work with Ivan Hampden and Paulette McWilliams. Ivan was Luther Vandross’ drummer and Paulette was the linchpin of Luther’s inimitable background vocals. It was a master class. “I was a bad motherfucker before that, but Paulette made me razor sharp.”

Only six months after moving to Miami, Big Brooklyn Red became known as the premier soul singer in South Florida. His trademark freestyles made each performance one of a kind. Born from the difficulty of getting musicians to rehearse, his live performances in Miami were often complete improvisations. “That’s where the magic is for me,” Brooklyn says. “To just open your mouth and listen to what God might have me say. The better I sound, the better the song is, the more humble it makes me.”

“Somewhere along the line somebody with a mind for marketing told me to let the audience in on what was happening,“ Brooklyn adds. “I got tired of people asking where they could20buy the song I had just made up.” At a 1999 gig at the Marlin Hotel on South Beach, he asked the audience for a phrase that they wanted to hear in a song. He flipped that phrase, and possibly a thousand more since then.

Every Friday night home game during the 2001/02 NBA season found “Big Bro oklyn Red and the Miami Funk All Stars” as the house band for the Miami Heat. They performed the National Anthem, a few time-outs, the halftime show, and the post game party. Big Brooklyn Red20was at the top…it was time to leave. Destiny was still calling.

At the end of 2002, with the help of his grandmother, Big Brooklyn Red bought a motor-home; packed up all his worldly possessions, his then girlfriend and his dog Lulu and set out on a grassroots tour of the U.S. He used this opportunity to promote the release of his first album Foreword while also singing the National Anthem for NFL and NBA games, as well as doing open mics and featured performances in cities along the way. Each stop along the road brought him to venues where he belonged, such as the stage of the world famous Black Lily in Philadelphia. He met artists who were doing Soul music with the same passion and work ethic he himself possessed. Heston in Atlanta, Fertile Ground in Baltimore, W. Ellington Felton, Raheem De Vaughn and K’Allyn in DC.

Upon reaching his destination in Los Angeles, Big Brooklyn Red quickly made his mark. At a weekly showcase called Neo-Soul Unplugged, he rose to the top of a group of up-and-comers. His performances there were so legendary that he was often positioned as the=2 0opening act for such headliners as Brian McKnight, Blu Cantrell, Chico DeBarge, Robin Thicke, and Deborah Cox. “At Neo-Soul Unplugged my freestyles would make the headliners change their show…they wanted to be that free.”

Big Brooklyn Red’s time in L.A. was short-lived. Nearly a year after arriving in the City of Angels, he decided to return to Miami Beac h. He felt the need to reconnect with the live music scene he’d had a hand in creating.

In 2003, three tracks from Foreword were licensed to the UK compilation Organic Soul Vol.3. “Time” was also licensed to be used on the compilations NY Soul and Soul Lounge Vol.1. At the same time, his second Soulful House track with producer Patrick Green was remixed by Dennis Ferrer and released. In two days, all 2,500 copies of the vinyl pressing were sold out and 1,300 reorders were requested. The track also got radio play on KCRW before the record company folded - making "I Got Sunshine" a bonafide house music hit, as well as an enigma.

Later that year, Big Brooklyn Red did three dates in England to support Organic Soul Vol.3, and then flew directly to NYC in order to film “Showtime At The Apollo.” His performances ma de the 2004 season of their Best of Amateur Night show.

In 2006, Deep Haven Records released “He Moves,” a Gospel House track Big Brooklyn Red recorded a year earlier as a one-take freestyle. The record label’s debut release was launched with a performance in Minneapolis at the 7th St. Entrance, part of the 1st Avenue club. “I’m in the club where20they shot Purple Rain, in this room that’s packed to the rafters and everybody is singing my lyrics while I’m performing the song! I was worried that I was going to mess it up…I freestyled that song so long ago. It took me weeks to learn the lyrics for that show! It was great,” he laughs.

Big Brooklyn Red is a performance driven artist. Since 2000, he has averaged over 50 shows per year. He continues to connect and build with his fellow soul artists by doing gigs in NYC, Atlanta, Chicago, Philly, New Orleans and D.C. Since the release of Foreword and subsequent recordings, he has balanced the presentation of his recorded material with showcasing his improvisational talent, and the freestyles are easily the most anticipated part of his live show. He won’t repeat a phrase he sang before and he never takes the easy way out.

He explains, “People have an expectation when they spit out a bunch of words for me to sing. I try to make it something they didn’t expect. When it’s pretty good IE2m thinking really fast. When it’s really on I’m not even thinking and sometimes I fall flat on my face. That’s the risk of being an artist and being committed to your craft.”
=0 A
Big Brooklyn Red rarely falls on his face.

In 2007 TruSoul Entertainment released Big Brooklyn Red’s mix tape, Unrehearsed Vol.1. It features freestyle one-take recordings over reco gnizable tracks. It is the application of Brooklyn’s organic process to Hip-Hop.

His next album, Answer The Call will be available in stores and on-line in the summer of 2008. Me anwhile he continues to record and perform around the world. He may currently be seen on MTV Italia in DJ Jad’s video for "By My Side"

JUNKYARD JEWEL
JUNKYARD JEWEL on ABC Radio Networks
– Junkyard Jewel song gets national radio play through Fame Games, the only indie radio show that gives you mainstream radio play. A DJ-favorite track on Fame Games radio, the song is a front page feature in this month's "Can You Top This" list, as well as on the on two of the DJ’s TOP PICK’s LISTS.

Check it out: www.MEERMUSIC.com

Press quotes from Fame Games radio panel on ABC RADIO NETWORKS:
"What a powerful, rich and touching voice! We’ve listened to this with bated breaths, truly captivated by the power of this performance. In a word WOW! The song itself may or may not translate to a wider audience. Given half a chance, however, it will win over many converts, of this we have no doubt.”

“Absolutely wonderful, what a fantastic voice she has.....such a richness in her voice.... she sounds so much like Roberta Flack... perhaps its (Junkyard Jewel is) not a commercially sounding crossover record, but because she’s got such class and such quality, it has made it to the finals today and I think Maya’s going to go a long long way...
Very honest...”

Accompanied by the metronomic but awesomely complex drummer Richard Spaven and the ingenious electric and acoustic bassist Tom Mason... Mitchell improvises in Herbie Hancockish sweeps but with more input from free-improv and contemporary classical music
The Guardian

Robert Mitchell 3io has its roots in its leader’s long-running band, Panacea. Drummer Richard Spaven and bassist Tom Mason are the rhythm section of Panacea and, together with Robert, have quietly been developing a real signature in this traditional jazz piano trio format. Over the years the trio has honed its mix of influences (song, odd metre, freeform jazz, broken beat, hip-hop, folk) with older and more modern jazz/electronica/rock. The Greater Good features arrangements of tunes by Massive Attack (Teardrop), and the famously sampled Galt MacDermot (composer of Hair), along with five Mitchell originals, a tune each by Tom and Richard, and the rarely played Dance Cadaverous, written by Wayne Shorter for his 1964 album Speak No Evil.

Robert Mitchell was born in Ilford, Essex in 1971 to a Grenadian father and a Barbadian mother. He studied at City University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and, as a graduate of Tomorrow’s Warriors and Gary Crosby's Nu Troop, plus award winning funky crossover bands Quite Sane and J-Life, has forged a formidable reputation as a gifted pianist and composer. As part of the prestigious F-ire Collective, Robert won the Jazz on 3 Innovation Award at the 2004 BBC Jazz Awards; he has also been nominated twice: for Rising Star in 2002, and Best New Work in 2003. He’s played/recorded with names such as Norma Winstone, Steve Coleman, Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson, Ty, 2 Banks of 4, and IG Culture, in addition to leading the six-piece Panacea. Panacea first performed in 2000, releasing its debut album, Voyager, on the Dune label a year later. Its second album, Trust, was released on F-IRE in 2005. A solo album, Equinox (originally a BBC Radio 3/Jerwood commission), was released in Spring 2007, and Robert curated a festival, Lifting The Lid: A Celebration of Modern Solo Piano, at Soho’s Pizza Express that Autumn. Robert plays in a hugely successful duo with Cuban violinist Omar Puente, and its debut album, Bridges, garnered critical acclaim on release in late 2006. Robert also works with US vocalist Jhelisa Anderson, composer/saxophonist Dan Stern, and bassist/singer Yolanda Charles/The Deep MO.

Tom Mason made the switch from classical violin to jazz bass at the age of 18 when he was offered a place at the Royal Academy of Music. Since then, in addition to performing, touring and recording with Panacea, Tom has worked with an eclectic array of artists including Athena, Robin Eubanks, Michael Cain, Gwilym Simcock, Gerard Presencer, Famadou Don Moye, BBC Big Band, Kings Cross Hotclub, Nicolas Meier Group, Carl Orr, Tim Garland, Timeline, Donovan and DJ Stix.

Richard Spaven is prolific on the nu-jazz and broken beat scene in the UK, US and Netherlands, playing with Mark de Clive-Lowe, 4 Hero, the Flowriders, Bugz in the Attic, US hip-hop group Platinum Pied Pipers and DJ Vadim's One Self. He also works with US singers Aaron Jerome, and Jose James (signed to Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label) and is musical director for Ty. Richard is also a long-standing member of Robert Mitchell's Panacea.
