International Soul Music Summit 2008
Just a brief note to congratulate Terry Bello on the 3rd ISMS and for making it an unmissable event in the Soul Calendar.
The event this year was intense, and much the better for it in my view.
The resounding conclusion from the event was that Soul Music is very much alive. Soul Music is reclaiming its position at the forefront of todays music. Culturally and philosophically it is moving forward, it is not going to sound like it was before but it will take from its history and mould it into a new force. Incidentally I wrote an ‘editorial’ on this a while back - http://lifeandsoulreviews.blogspot.com/2008/06/contemporary-soul.html
I am proud, honored and blessed to be involved with this movement in these exciting times.
A subsidiary conclusion was that invariably the wish was to remain independent. I believe this to be extremely important, not only in music but in any walk of life, as the freedom that this gives will enable progression to another level.
(on the first morning my camera broke, so I have no personal pictures of the event, so I would be grateful to receive any pictures - thanks Trish Chappell already got yours – and I have started to ‘steal’ some that I have come across)

Abby Dobson's name has been floating around the soul circuit and singer/songwriter's circle for a few years now and she's admired by most of these talented vocalists/writers. Abby is blessed with some amazing vocal pipes and when you see her perform you will know exactly what I'm talking about. Ms. Dobson has gone about creatively raising money to finish her debut which has been a project over time as she's recorded it completely in analog- not digital folks! Analog - meaning that every song went through a special process that's long and arduous and a lot of passion and soul will be seeping through when we finally do get to hear it. The debut called 'Sleeping Beauty': You are the one you've been waiting for. Abby wants to secure the best mixing and mastering engineers around and for that- some money needs to be raised and she's doing that by individually selling raffles through her website and paypal and will be raffling off winners and prizes on Thursday, October 23rd at Solomon's Porch where she'll also be performing. In the meantime-- we must come and see her performing live at Tillman's Lounge for the Marksmen Monday nights. Abby will be turning another year and we will be celebrating with her performing along with special friends. Abby Dobson live for a birthday we won't forget-- 10PM Tillman's Lounge.
You'll be hearing more and more from April Hill. The buzz keeps growing- the momentum continues to build. She's smart, she's talented, she's beautiful, she's April. She's performing tonight at Apache Cafe's Soul Suite for Atlantis Music Conference- Midnight She's done a bunch of podcasts lately including Blogtalk Radio with Duane Simon's Soultalk, she has a bunch of features dropping in publications coming soon and now you can hear her live on Ebony/Jet.. Submissions and your chance to enter please log on to April Hill. April will be performing in Detroit at the Soultracks Readers' Choice Awards. October 3rd at Max Fischer Music Center. She's up for 'Best New Artist'- Exciting stuff happening for April Hill....
Heston- well- first must say- - an incredible songwriter- impeccable and I feel so honored to be working with him. I have to say when it comes to artistry he is exceptional! His debut album - the much anticipated is finally available digitally world-wide. The wait is over. ' Storyteller' is magnificently powerful. He's on Michael Baisden's show right now- 4PM He's a top seller on Soultracks and several other soul sites Heston will also be performing at The Soultracks Awards in Detroit and he's up for 'Best New Artist' and 'Best Male Vocalist'. Look for lots to develop over the next few months with Heston.
I got a lot of England in my life right now and this oh so makes me happy...My roots! All the way live from London is the funky soulful dance act- Reel People. Their 2nd album will see the light Stateside- as they ready the release of 'Seven Ways to Wonder'. Reel People spearheaded by Oli Lazurus of Papa Records fame... Oli will come over to NY for promo and guest DJ appearances sometime in November. There are 12 juicy tracks on the latest project and a few guests including Darien and Omar... In fact-- I can't stop listening to this album.. Also- a listening party for the 'Seven Ways to Wonder' at Frank's Lounge- Nu-Soul Series- Sept 20th...
Treat yourself to a relaxing escape with like minds- It's the 2nd Annual OWN YOUR POWER RETREAT. Sept 26-27th at Miami Botanical Gardens This retreat promises to be an empowering weekend. You will enjoy personal development, business and natural healing workshops designed to broaden your vision and bring clarity. A total integration of Body, Mind and Spirit. Don't miss out.... | I lied-- I thought this was going to be short and sweet but that's impossible for me it seems.... Thanks as always for reading and supporting my passion. You are really the ones who inspire me and continue to allow me to shape my journey in the most creative ways possible... This has been a dream and I'm just getting going with The Bloom Effect and now The Bloom Blog and so much more growth on the way. Look for a massive participation in this year's CMJ. A lot in the works including: I Kiffe NY and the fabulous French Hip Hop at HIRO on Friday, October 24th. International Hip Hop showcase at DROM on October 23rd. Dirty Fuzz on the British night at ANNEX on 22nd October and a couple other events being fixed up as we speak... It will be from CMJ to Spain straight after that for WOMEX and I can't wait. SOUL:ID
'SEX, LOVE & PHILOSOPHY'
Out 3rd November on Urban Deeper Underground
"quality soul with a capital Q" - Straight Outta Now
WATCH THE EPK HERE:

While their sound may be considered in the same musical sphere as Jill Scott, Sa-Ra, D’Angelo and Platinum Pied Pipers, Soul:ID is more than just a band. Their unique story has given shape to a concept - dubbed "Afropean Soul" - which reflects their virtues and beliefs. Soul:ID tells the story of today’s African and Afro-Europeans overcoming ethnic, social and economical barriers while promoting positive messages and images of what functioning multiculturalism can achieve. Soul:ID is a product of this African/European renaissance and recognize the importance of celebrating it.
After having been the first urban act ever to play Rwanda, Soul:ID have been labelled ‘Ambassadors of Peace’. It is their intention to be a synonym for a more peaceful and beautiful synergy of mixing cultures beyond the borders of ethnicity or social, mental and geographical borders. One of the group’s plans is to put together an initiative for peace coming from the cultural sector rather than the political one. There are in discussions to organize a series of free festivals in the three capitals Kigali, Bujumbura and Kinshasa attracting international attention to the areas and improving the local economy and culture.

Alex Wilson’s sixth solo CD release is a continuation of his own unique vision of latin dance music for the 21st century. Like any good sauce, this salsa is a mix of many flavours - a little bit of clave and tumbao from Cuba, a touch of Colombian spice, some soul flavours from the USA and a whole chunk of gospel from London, all blended together with the skill and precision of a master chef
DJ Lubi
Alex Wilson really does play latin jazz – in the sense of fearlessly improvising with structure and notes – rather than the party-on chord-clattering that often passes for it. He’s a tireless student of the music of the central and southern Americas and the Caribbean - and capable of drawing the most ardent devotees of commercial salsa into his own musical world. [Alex’s] classy compositions confirm how devotedly he has absorbed the original sources while developing a sound totally his own
John Fordham, The Guardian
The UK’s undisputed master of salsa/latin jazz, pianist/bandleader Alex Wilson takes his 12-piece orchestra to Leeds for an exclusive Northern CD launch party for his new album, Salsa Con Soul. Featuring the powerful vocals of Aquilla Fearon (as heard on Alex’s previous album, Inglaterra), expect an uproariously danceable set of Alex Wilson classics - such as Show Me and Ain't Nobody - alongside tracks from the new release.
With Salsa Con Soul, his sixth solo release, Alex Wilson continues to forge ahead with his very own musical vision. Following the success of last year’s crossover salsa album, Inglaterra, Alex decided to push his soul-meets-salsa trademark further by recording some of the best gospel, soul and latin musicians in the UK; Salsa Con Soul was the result.
As the title suggests, Salsa con Soul is a contemporary fusion of authentic Cuban rhythms with a soul and gospel vibe. Accompanied by a 12-piece band - featuring two soul divas, Aquilla Fearon and Naomi Phillips, plus Elpidio Caicedo - Salsa con Soul continues the groove begun on 2002’s R&B Latino, and refined on Inglaterra. The strongest new element introduced is that of gospel music, as heard in the lead and backing vocals, the occasional Hammond organ grooves, and the lyrics on the English language numbers - uplifting words and music straight out of the modern Afro-Caribbean church tradition.
The Guardian’s review of Inglaterra concluded that: ‘anyone who has been knocked sideways by Wilson's playing on a Courtney Pine or Jazz Jamaica gig should be warned that this is not a jazz album’; Salsa con Soul, however, does contain two stunning piano solos, evoking Alex’s jazz pedigree.
In the liner notes, the UK’s top salsa record spinner DJ Lubi takes us through the album: ‘The opening track, You’re Fine, is another one of those big Alex Wilson originals featuring vocalist Aquilla Fearon, first heard on Inglaterra, and it has the potential be a big salsa moderna dancefloor hit. Rhythm & Life is another huge song and the most obviously gospel influenced one, this time featuring lead vocals from Naomi Phillips. Stronger slows the tempo down (again featuring Naomi Phillips on vocals), and is the perfect end-of-night salsa song, whilst Memories has the wonder of Stevie written all over it, featuring guest vocalist Wayne Ellington. The most ambitious track on the CD is the slow guajira This Time, a type of Cuban blues punctuated with blazing horns and hypnotic charanga violins. Alex’s ability to realise the potential of non-latin/salsa songs and re-arrange them into those genres is clearly visible on the album’s two cover versions: a smooth salsa con soul arrangement of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together, and Rio De Janeiro Blue, from Randy Crawford’s Secret Combination LP, is transcribed into a bluesy lights-down-low latin jazz vocal featuring Aquilla Fearon. The three most traditional latin/salsa tracks include an instrumental percussion/piano feature and two vocal numbers: Antonio is a rhythm section number that gives Alex’s longstanding drummers Dave Pattman (timbales and bongo) and Emeris Solis (congas) the chance to stretch out whilst he holds the montuno down Charlie Palmieri style. Sabroson features Colombian singer Elpidio Caicedo and is definitely a dancefloor hit. Elpidio features again on the up-tempo salsa moderna song Mi Buenaventura, a homage to his hometown in Colombia’.
Alex Wilson biog:
From his debut solo CD, Afro-Saxon, in 1998, through to this present recording, Alex Wilson’s journey has been one of experimentation and exploration, seeking to find his own voice within the latin music world. Born of mixed British and Sierra Leone parentage in the UK, Alex spent the first year of his life in West Africa before his family returned to Britain. His teenage years were spent between Austria and Switzerland (where he is now based). Alex’s father was an enthusiastic amateur pianist and he taught his son to play piano from an early age; Alex also had classical guitar lessons and auditioned on both instruments for the Vienna Conservatoire when he was 11. Seven years of serious tuition turned him into a virtuoso classical guitar player but piano won out; he turned professional in 1993, and was soon gigging around London, sitting in at latin jam sessions run by the UK’s top timbalero, Colombian Roberto Pla, who quickly recruited him into his Latin Ensemble.
Alex signed a solo recording contract with Candid Records in 1998, was named Rising Star at the British Jazz Awards in 1999, and joined Courtney Pine’s band the following year. He’s performed with a wide range of artists in the latin, jazz, soul and reggae genres including Gary Crosby, Sandra Cross, Marc Anthony, Jesús Alemañy, Adalberto Santiago, Jocelyn Brown, Snowboy, Cheo Feliciano, and Cleveland Watkiss. Alex cut three CDs for Candid: Afro-Saxon (1998), Anglo-Cubano (1999), and R&B Latino (2002), the latter creating a genre all of its own, before forming his own label and releasing Aventuras, Colombian/Cuban-influenced latin jazz for the listener. His fifth release, Inglaterra, featured a reworking of Chaka Khan’s anthem Ain't Nobody, sung by Aquilla Fearon, which became a worldwide hit on the salsa scene.
As a composer and musical director, Alex has received commissions from Nitro (Britain’s leading black theatre company), Royal Opera House, Royal Northern College of Music, and SPNM (Society for the Promotion of New Music). He has worked as a record producer for various artists, most recently Gwyn Allen in I Love Louis: A Creole Tribute to Louis Armstrong; written the music for a new theatre production, The Wedding Dance, by Felix Cross, award-winning Artistic Director of Nitro; and, on a more commercial note, composed the theme tune for Channel 4’s How to Look Good Naked TV series. Another recent project was Uplifting Roots, a contemporary soul-reggae project co-led by Jamaican drummer Kenrick Rowe; he also guested notably on Courtney Pine’s Jazz Warriors Afropeans and Sidney Bechet projects.
Alex is a committed music educator, having delivered workshops and masterclasses for young people both in the UK and internationally; he is currently Special Lecturer in Music at the University of Nottingham. This autumn, Alex will lead a week’s course for young musicians at Aldeburgh, the conservatoire established by Benjamin Britten; he is also Aldeburgh’s Composer In Residence during this time, developing his forthcoming Malian music project with master kora player Madou Sidiki Diabate.
