KOFFEE
MISS GEORGIA

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Like her name, KOFFEE's music is rich, warm & filling! Aptly nick-named "Miss Georgia", Koffee is true to the southern soul she offers in her sophomore CD, also named "Miss Georgia. Through every component of her lyrics, she effortlessly weaves her personal tale of love, life and pain brilliantly adding humor and sensuality, into the mix. Like any true song stylist, Koffee has shown her vocal versatility, ranging from jazz-scat, hip-hop to R&B/Soul. Anticipating the release of what is technically considered her third CD but, first on Chuck D's new indie label SUPERNATURAL, the CD "Voltage" will once again give you that perfect balance of hip, edgy & urban sound. Koffee has been seen all through the southeast region and she grinds hard, some of have called her "the bad girl of soul" and she definitely knows how to get hers! This sista' is definitely a musical mainstay, just keep your eyes and ears open if you want to get a real taste of KOFFEE!!!!

Good Morning Everyone,
Just wanted to send a quick note to let you know that I'm going to be on Michael Baisden's radio show today. So please tune in at 4 p.m. I'm going to debut my song "Pave A New Road," talk about the upcoming Presidential election and catch up with my boys Mike and George Wilborn. Call in to 1-877-622-3269 to let us know what you think of the song or just to holla at your boy to say Happy Birthday (hint, hint... hahahaha).
"Pave A New Road" is a bonus track on a project called Rockin' The Vote from My Muze and Rock The Vote.
With the state of the world today and all of the hopes we're putting into the upcoming historical presidential election, I think the song is needed. I hope that you all will embrace it and spread the word about it.
Rockin The Vote is also a songwriting contest, so all of you writers, singers, rappers, and music fans, go to www.rockinthevote.com for more details. You can hear "Pave A New Road" on that site, as well as my Myspace page, and is available now at iTunes.
We've created a great photo video for the song, too, so be sure to check out my blog to see and comment on it.

Life and Soul Sept 08 News

Life and Soul – What’s Going On

International Soul Music Summit 2008

Just a brief note to congratulate Terry Bello on the 3rd ISMS and for making it an unmissable event in the Soul Calendar.

The event this year was intense, and much the better for it in my view.

The resounding conclusion from the event was that Soul Music is very much alive. Soul Music is reclaiming its position at the forefront of todays music. Culturally and philosophically it is moving forward, it is not going to sound like it was before but it will take from its history and mould it into a new force. Incidentally I wrote an ‘editorial’ on this a while back - http://lifeandsoulreviews.blogspot.com/2008/06/contemporary-soul.html

I am proud, honored and blessed to be involved with this movement in these exciting times.

A subsidiary conclusion was that invariably the wish was to remain independent. I believe this to be extremely important, not only in music but in any walk of life, as the freedom that this gives will enable progression to another level.

(on the first morning my camera broke, so I have no personal pictures of the event, so I would be grateful to receive any pictures - thanks Trish Chappell already got yours – and I have started to ‘steal’ some that I have come across)

International Soul Music Summit 2009

The date for the summit has been locked to be the same weekend in September each year. For the first time it is now possible to plan a year in advance. This is particularly useful for non USA residents.

We would like to increase the attendance from outside the US. It would be helpful if you would let me know whether you would like to attend. No commitment at this stage, simply to be kept in touch. Just drop me an email headed ISMS 2009 Pre register to mike@lifeandsoulpromotions.co.uk

4th Annual Independent Soul Mixer New York 2009

Preparations are underway, following the phenomenal success of 2008, for the 2009 event on 21 March 2009. Again please register an interest by emailing me headed Mixer to mike@lifeandsoulpromotions.co.uk

Again if there is sufficient interest from the UK we may be able to organise ‘specials’.

Radio

I am currently involved in several radio initiatives:-

I still currently guest approximately once a month on the Soul Train show on http://www.starbristol.co.uk/ Sunday Evenings UK time &pm to midnight

Radio Cardiff - http://radiocardiff.org/ Currently off air for live shows but will return shortly pending move to new premises.

Rhythm and Soul Radio http://www.rhythmandsoulradio.com/ starting October and every 3rd and 4th Sunday the Soul Freedom show starts, with myself and KGB as residents and assorted guests over the coming months.

I am also involved in discussions with two other parties regarding the formation of two new stations, more information as it evolves but two exciting ventures for the new year.

Other Events

I am also discussing, working out feasibility currently, another event on the Soul Calendar in the UK. Hopefully this will evolve into something worthwhile – details will be sent out as soon as.

Taxation and Accounting

As many of you will know I am a director at Colin Coates and Partners, a general purpose tax practice, but with a media and entertainment portfolio of clients. I am a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser and also a Trust and Estate Practitioner.

Anybody with any tax issues are welcome to contact me for a free initial discussion. My contact for this is mike@ccptax.com or 01934 844133.

This is particularly for UK residents or visitors to the UK but we have contacts in other jurisdictions so we may be able to help otherwise – just ask.

Website Reviews and New Product promotion

New reviews are being posted at http://lifeandsoulreviews.blogspot.com/ so I am always pleased to receive new product. The key objective of my group of sites is to promote new music. In addition to the review site much product is played on the radio shows mentioned above. If I am honest there has probably been less on the site and more on the radio over recent months but both go hand in hand.

Email addresses

If you are picking up this bulletin on MySpace, Facebook, Soul Commune or elsewhere please also ensure that I have your regular email address to ensure that you are kept up to date on new and relevant initiatives.

Soul Freedom

My events and also Soul Freedom events and radio performances are posted regularly on http://www.myspace.com/lifeandsoulpromotions

This Saturday at a new venue Rockin Chair in Cardiff and 4 October our regular longstanding event at City Canteen and Bar Cardiff. Check the above link for full details.

Chris Rob in the UK

Chris Rob, New York Independent Soul Artist, will be in the UK at end of October. A few dates are available – any interested venues, events or promoters interested please let me know.

2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Event

2nd Annual 'Domestic Violence Awareness Event' at the Sugar Bar

Domestic Violence Awareness month evolved from the first day of Unity observed in Oct, 1981 by the National Collation Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered women's advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The day of unity soon became a special week when a range of activities were conducted at local, state, and national levels.www.ncadv.org

Icreeupree is an independent company made up primarily of women, who have been indirectly or directly affected by domestic violence. We have decided that it's very crucial to take an affirmative stand by bringing the awareness of domestic to the music and entertainment communities. Icreepuree has reached out to singers, artists, musicians, book writers and TV hosts, to stress the importance of domestic violence on the night of October 17th 2008 at the Sugar Bar NYC.

The renowned Sugar Bar owned by the world's famous Ashford & Simpson will help create the most idyllic atmosphere on the night of
October 17th, 2008 our 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Event, entitled "The 5 Sistah’s with Soul and Wisdom" is where Soul, Jazz, Improvisation and Wisdom will convene on stage to enlighten, educate and entertain with a focal purpose. Let us all gather together and fight this disease called domestic violence.

Featured artists includes:

Imessiah Soul - one of today's most compelling, soul sea rching artists who aims to bring a new and natural swagger to the world of Neo-Soul a nd R&B. Ghanniyya Green - a well accomplished jazz vocalist known from New York to Japan. Abiola Abrams - A well accomplished film director, book writer and television show host, (Bet J, HBO, & NBC). Kennedy Williams-Benjamin - wife of Bronx assemblyman Michael Benjamin and author of "Processing Life's Moments": Therapy for the Soul: God, I Can Hear You, and Cikethia - bring to the stage Spoken Word/Improvisation.
The atmosphere and setting will be perfectly conducive to highlight the message that these 5 ladies will aim to arouse in their audience. Their message in music and word will be a perfect and inspiring tool to express their mission, which is to let victims of domestic violence know they are not alone and not to give into F.E.A.R,which Imessiah Soul perceives as "false evidence appearing real".

Overall the show will serve its purpose, To Inform, Educate, Empower and Create an atmosphere of awareness to the disturbing and alarming factors exposed when Domestic Violence shows it's ugly face.

Friends and Fam

I'm short and sweet on this one as I'm on the way to Baltimore for Baltimore Music Conference. If you're looking to get some education and insight and meet folks- I suggest you take a trip to B-Town. I'm moderating the Blog 101/Social Media panel. The Blogs The word these days!

I heard good things about International Soul Summit. Everyone had a great bonding experience- the vibe good- great panels and so much talent. Heard John Bibbs, Darien, Colette, Chris Rob, did their thing. Heard April Hill said her piece on the Artist Speaks! Look for big things next year in Atl! April is performing tonight at Apache Cafe- Soul Suite at Atlantic Music Conference- Midnight..

I'm going to hook up with Stevie, Kuku, Jay Stewart, Ritza, Flava, Labtekwon, Kimani, John Chambers and other folks in D.C for Black Luv Fest. Can't wait. That's on Sunday.

September is flying. Just decided on my NYE plans- very excited! And....Growing the blog-- The Bloom Blog - announcement coming soon!

The Nu-Soul Series is one of the premiere world soul music showcases. Every month I always discover hot new talent. Edclectic Entertainment and Purpose Records produce this superb event and it's held on Saturdays monthly at Frank's Lounge in Fort Greene.

I have been hosting the event- so getting to witness this talent first hand. This weekend I won't be there so Les Clarke is holding it down on the Mic...He's great!

There's a listening party for UK's REEL PEOPLE. New album ' Seven Ways to Wonder'. The album will be for sale that night too for the first time in the U.S....So cop it early! Performing live is Allbright ft Vivian Sessoms and Shae Fiol.

Saturday- Frank's Lounge 8PM
Singer/Songwriter/Guitar- Kate Schutt is shining with her latest album 'Telephone Game'. She'll be bringing her repertoire and rep to the lovely World Cafe Live for a Brunch Series they do every Sunday.

Kate performs with her trio for 4 Sundays starting with this Sunday, September 21st. Her trio consists of Orrin Evans on piano and Justin Faulkner on drums. Oct 12th. November 16th, and December 14th- make your plans now....

Kate Schutt is on ArtistShare.
We love Teedra Moses. She needs more shine and she'll be getting it now that the 2nd album 'The Young Lioness' is set to come out. I had the pleasure of working with her while at TVT Records a couple years back with the critically acclaimed debut ' Complex Simplicity'.

SOB's is happy to be bringing her back- Her second time at SOB's and I know this is going to be a hot one so I suggest you get your tickets now before they SELL OUT!

The talented Russell Taylor will be opening the show. Thursday, September 25th Doors at 7PM

Can't wait to hear the new material-- I know it's been brewing for a while and word on the street is---- HOT!
Abby Dobson's name has been floating around the soul circuit and singer/songwriter's circle for a few years now and she's admired by most of these talented vocalists/writers. Abby is blessed with some amazing vocal pipes and when you see her perform you will know exactly what I'm talking about.

Ms. Dobson has gone about creatively raising money to finish her debut which has been a project over time as she's recorded it completely in analog- not digital folks! Analog - meaning that every song went through a special process that's long and arduous and a lot of passion and soul will be seeping through when we finally do get to hear it.

The debut called 'Sleeping Beauty': You are the one you've been waiting for. Abby wants to secure the best mixing and mastering engineers around and for that- some money needs to be raised and she's doing that by individually selling raffles through her website and paypal and will be raffling off winners and prizes on Thursday, October 23rd at Solomon's Porch where she'll also be performing.

In the meantime-- we must come and see her performing live at Tillman's Lounge for the Marksmen Monday nights. Abby will be turning another year and we will be celebrating with her performing along with special friends.

Abby Dobson live for a birthday we won't forget-- 10PM Tillman's Lounge.
You'll be hearing more and more from April Hill. The buzz keeps growing- the momentum continues to build. She's smart, she's talented, she's beautiful, she's April. She's performing tonight at Apache Cafe's Soul Suite for Atlantis Music Conference- Midnight

She's done a bunch of podcasts lately including Blogtalk Radio with Duane Simon's Soultalk, she has a bunch of features dropping in publications coming soon and now you can hear her live on Ebony/Jet..

Her label Jazzy Peach just announced a REMIX CONTEST for her 2nd single ' The Search'. Producers and DJ's - here's a chance to be the one! There's a cash prize of $1,000. Submissions and your chance to enter please log on to April Hill.

April will be performing in Detroit at the Soultracks Readers' Choice Awards. October 3rd at Max Fischer Music Center. She's up for 'Best New Artist'- Exciting stuff happening for April Hill....
Heston- well- first must say- - an incredible songwriter- impeccable and I feel so honored to be working with him. I have to say when it comes to artistry he is exceptional!

His debut album - the much anticipated is finally available digitally world-wide. The wait is over. ' Storyteller' is magnificently powerful. He's on Michael Baisden's show right now- 4PM

He's a top seller on Soultracks and several other soul sites

Heston will also be performing at The Soultracks Awards in Detroit and he's up for 'Best New Artist' and 'Best Male Vocalist'.

Look for lots to develop over the next few months with Heston.
I got a lot of England in my life right now and this oh so makes me happy...My roots! All the way live from London is the funky soulful dance act- Reel People. Their 2nd album will see the light Stateside- as they ready the release of 'Seven Ways to Wonder'.

Reel People spearheaded by Oli Lazurus of Papa Records fame... Oli will come over to NY for promo and guest DJ appearances sometime in November.

There are 12 juicy tracks on the latest project and a few guests including Darien and Omar... In fact-- I can't stop listening to this album..

Also- a listening party for the 'Seven Ways to Wonder' at Frank's Lounge- Nu-Soul Series- Sept 20th...
Treat yourself to a relaxing escape with like minds- It's the 2nd Annual OWN YOUR POWER RETREAT. Sept 26-27th at Miami Botanical Gardens

This retreat promises to be an empowering weekend. You will enjoy personal development, business and natural healing workshops designed to broaden your vision and bring clarity. A total integration of Body, Mind and Spirit.

Don't miss out.... Tables/booths selling out fast!!!! REGISTER NOW!!! Sadly- I won't be going down there but Simone Kelly tells me there will be an OWN YOUR POWER - NY next year!!!! So stay tuned!!!

I lied-- I thought this was going to be short and sweet but that's impossible for me it seems.... Thanks as always for reading and supporting my passion. You are really the ones who inspire me and continue to allow me to shape my journey in the most creative ways possible...

This has been a dream and I'm just getting going with The Bloom Effect and now The Bloom Blog and so much more growth on the way.

Look for a massive participation in this year's CMJ. A lot in the works including: I Kiffe NY and the fabulous French Hip Hop at HIRO on Friday, October 24th. International Hip Hop showcase at DROM on October 23rd. Dirty Fuzz on the British night at ANNEX on 22nd October and a couple other events being fixed up as we speak...

It will be from CMJ to Spain straight after that for WOMEX and I can't wait. I'm dropping in on Sam The Kid in Portugal too so look out!

It's Friday! Enjoy the weekend......

Sincerely,

Fiona Bloom

SOUL:ID
'SEX, LOVE & PHILOSOPHY'
Out 3rd November on Urban Deeper Underground

"quality soul with a capital Q" - Straight Outta Now

WATCH THE EPK HERE:

While their sound may be considered in the same musical sphere as Jill Scott, Sa-Ra, D’Angelo and Platinum Pied Pipers, Soul:ID is more than just a band. Their unique story has given shape to a concept - dubbed "Afropean Soul" - which reflects their virtues and beliefs. Soul:ID tells the story of today’s African and Afro-Europeans overcoming ethnic, social and economical barriers while promoting positive messages and images of what functioning multiculturalism can achieve. Soul:ID is a product of this African/European renaissance and recognize the importance of celebrating it.

After having been the first urban act ever to play Rwanda, Soul:ID have been labelled ‘Ambassadors of Peace’. It is their intention to be a synonym for a more peaceful and beautiful synergy of mixing cultures beyond the borders of ethnicity or social, mental and geographical borders. One of the group’s plans is to put together an initiative for peace coming from the cultural sector rather than the political one. There are in discussions to organize a series of free festivals in the three capitals Kigali, Bujumbura and Kinshasa attracting international attention to the areas and improving the local economy and culture.

In the time they’ve been together as a group, Soul:ID has worked with many notable international acts such touring with world-rhythm pioneer Zap Mama throughout Europe, headlined the legendary Jazz Café in London, and individually worked with artists like Wyclef Jean, Craig David, Robert Palmer and Youssou N’Dour.

InJoy~OutJoy Presents at Mocha Moms Conference

"I've learned to take time for myself and to treat myself with a great deal of love and respect because I like me". Whoopi Goldberg

Melissa is a member of the Mocha Moms, Westchester Chapter and is proud to be presenting a seminar at the conference themed "A Village of Mothers Strengthening Ourselves to Support our Families and Communities" on September 26 - 27 at Crowne Plaza Meadowlands in Secaucus, NJ.

Melissa created this seminar titled "SOS: Strengthening Our Self" to support women in being "Divinely Selfish". It's about the power of giving to ourselves FIRST internally before we extend ourselves to others externally including our children, family and community.

The seminar will challenge limiting beliefs that we as women and mothers hold about ourselves. It's about taking steps to be all of who we dream ourselves to be. The seminar will also provide some practical tools that we can use every day to fortify ourselves and strengthen ourselves from with-in and then extend that strength with-out to others.

This workshop will also be presented in New York City later in the year. Melissa is available for motivational speaking engagements, inner-powering workshops one-to-one life coaching and feng shui consultations.

Nu-Soul bridges the gap between the world of R&B/soul and the underground vibes of electronica, the common factor being a grounding in funk, soul and urban lifestyle. This is a place where the sounds of neo-soul, drum and bass, deep house and breakbeat are a part of the same family. Through fascinating articles, engaging interviews, and the latest reviews, Nu-Soul hopes to open minds to the incredible array of soul influenced music available today.

    D. Mawl Makes His Mark in Atlanta

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HIP HOP SOUL ARTIST D. MAWL IS EMBRACED BY ATLANTA MEDIA AND LEAVES A LASTING IMPRESSION WITH NEW FANS

    D. Mawl Received Rave Reviews In Hot-lanta and Proved That the Grind Is Not Just About Him, But the Movement as a Whole
    D. Mawl in studio with WRFG's Jay Force.
    (D. Mawl Interviews with WRFG's Jay Force)

Louisville, KY - September 24, 2008 - Atlanta got its first dose of D. Mawl's musical medicine during the 3rd Annual International Soul Music Summit. D. Mawl laced the hands of global djs, radio hosts and media executives with his latest project, "The Lost 16". Some of Atlanta's prominent outlets, including Rolling Out, Vertical Fix and WRFG granted interviews after reviewing his profanity-free, roots hip-hop music. D. Mawl gained hundreds of additional fans when he distributed water to aspiring actors, actresses, singers and performers waiting for their one-minute shot of fame for an upcoming Tyler Perry production. D. Mawl has been requested to perform in Atlanta and is currently coordinating with local promoters and club owners.

As a person that is dedicated to the grind of true hip-hop, D. Mawl understands the passion that it takes to fulfill dreams. When he saw the 400-500 people lined around the Fox Theatre to audition for Tyler Perry, he definitely recognized the sacrifice. "They were out there in that hot sun, waiting for their chance to shine. I just wanted to do what I could to support them. I figured they would appreciate the water," says D. Mawl. "We have to have each other's back. It's a struggle, whether you an artist, actor or author. But if we uplift each other, even in the smallest way, we'll be alright!" The people of Atlanta have been showing their love by visiting D. Mawl's website, Myspace and other social networking pages.

The Third International Soul Music Summit

The 3rd International Soul Music Summit
“State of Emergency Part II: Is Soul Music Dead”
September 12-13 2008-15 Renaissance Atlanta Hotel Downtown
    Atlanta Georgia
    www.soulmusicsummit.net

Well the question was posed and the emphatic and unanimous answer was positively No – in fact the reverse was true – Soul Music is about to re-emerge as the potent musical force it once was.

Importantly also the attendees, made up of some of the leading and emerging artists together with key players in the (new) Soul Music industry were united in the aim of driving Soul Music forward.

Individually there is room for everybody to do their own thing if collectively the main issues are common ground.

This conference held on a reduced format of 2 says was intense, without time to catch breath and barely time to eat, it went on from 10 am through till the early hours. There were some overlaps and tight timekeeping but in a way this helped in keeping up the intensity and people just wanted to move on and not move away, right through to the end with a surprise appearance by Raphael Saadiq.

The new venue was excellent and catered for the conference extremely well. The date and the venue is now locked and so the 4th annual summit will take place on the same weekend next year.

Aside from one hiccup on the first night the evening and nighttimes sets by many of the artists were consistently good and included several exceptional performances.

I actually don’t want to write too much about any particular session or any particular performance as this would be unfair on those that were left out. Suffice to say the content was high, the performance levels were high, new ground was covered, different and challenging debates ensued, different perspectives were put forward. The overriding result however was that most wanted to retain independence and artistry was paramount and overriding.

Catching opinion as we all left it would seem that the event was a success; the event is becoming essential, the event is a key focal point for all those in or connected to the industry – it is where major networking is done and where ideas and progression is conceived.

Terry Bello once again is to be congratulated for pulling it off. With the date fixed it is now possible to start planning straight away for the next one.

Alex Wilson’s sixth solo CD release is a continuation of his own unique vision of latin dance music for the 21st century. Like any good sauce, this salsa is a mix of many flavours - a little bit of clave and tumbao from Cuba, a touch of Colombian spice, some soul flavours from the USA and a whole chunk of gospel from London, all blended together with the skill and precision of a master chef
    DJ Lubi

Alex Wilson really does play latin jazz – in the sense of fearlessly improvising with structure and notes – rather than the party-on chord-clattering that often passes for it. He’s a tireless student of the music of the central and southern Americas and the Caribbean - and capable of drawing the most ardent devotees of commercial salsa into his own musical world. [Alex’s] classy compositions confirm how devotedly he has absorbed the original sources while developing a sound totally his own
    John Fordham, The Guardian

The UK’s undisputed master of salsa/latin jazz, pianist/bandleader Alex Wilson takes his 12-piece orchestra to Leeds for an exclusive Northern CD launch party for his new album, Salsa Con Soul. Featuring the powerful vocals of Aquilla Fearon (as heard on Alex’s previous album, Inglaterra), expect an uproariously danceable set of Alex Wilson classics - such as Show Me and Ain't Nobody - alongside tracks from the new release.

With Salsa Con Soul, his sixth solo release, Alex Wilson continues to forge ahead with his very own musical vision. Following the success of last year’s crossover salsa album, Inglaterra, Alex decided to push his soul-meets-salsa trademark further by recording some of the best gospel, soul and latin musicians in the UK; Salsa Con Soul was the result.

As the title suggests, Salsa con Soul is a contemporary fusion of authentic Cuban rhythms with a soul and gospel vibe. Accompanied by a 12-piece band - featuring two soul divas, Aquilla Fearon and Naomi Phillips, plus Elpidio Caicedo - Salsa con Soul continues the groove begun on 2002’s R&B Latino, and refined on Inglaterra. The strongest new element introduced is that of gospel music, as heard in the lead and backing vocals, the occasional Hammond organ grooves, and the lyrics on the English language numbers - uplifting words and music straight out of the modern Afro-Caribbean church tradition.

The Guardian’s review of Inglaterra concluded that: ‘anyone who has been knocked sideways by Wilson's playing on a Courtney Pine or Jazz Jamaica gig should be warned that this is not a jazz album’; Salsa con Soul, however, does contain two stunning piano solos, evoking Alex’s jazz pedigree.

In the liner notes, the UK’s top salsa record spinner DJ Lubi takes us through the album: ‘The opening track, You’re Fine, is another one of those big Alex Wilson originals featuring vocalist Aquilla Fearon, first heard on Inglaterra, and it has the potential be a big salsa moderna dancefloor hit. Rhythm & Life is another huge song and the most obviously gospel influenced one, this time featuring lead vocals from Naomi Phillips. Stronger slows the tempo down (again featuring Naomi Phillips on vocals), and is the perfect end-of-night salsa song, whilst Memories has the wonder of Stevie written all over it, featuring guest vocalist Wayne Ellington. The most ambitious track on the CD is the slow guajira This Time, a type of Cuban blues punctuated with blazing horns and hypnotic charanga violins. Alex’s ability to realise the potential of non-latin/salsa songs and re-arrange them into those genres is clearly visible on the album’s two cover versions: a smooth salsa con soul arrangement of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together, and Rio De Janeiro Blue, from Randy Crawford’s Secret Combination LP, is transcribed into a bluesy lights-down-low latin jazz vocal featuring Aquilla Fearon. The three most traditional latin/salsa tracks include an instrumental percussion/piano feature and two vocal numbers: Antonio is a rhythm section number that gives Alex’s longstanding drummers Dave Pattman (timbales and bongo) and Emeris Solis (congas) the chance to stretch out whilst he holds the montuno down Charlie Palmieri style. Sabroson features Colombian singer Elpidio Caicedo and is definitely a dancefloor hit. Elpidio features again on the up-tempo salsa moderna song Mi Buenaventura, a homage to his hometown in Colombia’.

    Alex Wilson biog:
From his debut solo CD, Afro-Saxon, in 1998, through to this present recording, Alex Wilson’s journey has been one of experimentation and exploration, seeking to find his own voice within the latin music world. Born of mixed British and Sierra Leone parentage in the UK, Alex spent the first year of his life in West Africa before his family returned to Britain. His teenage years were spent between Austria and Switzerland (where he is now based). Alex’s father was an enthusiastic amateur pianist and he taught his son to play piano from an early age; Alex also had classical guitar lessons and auditioned on both instruments for the Vienna Conservatoire when he was 11. Seven years of serious tuition turned him into a virtuoso classical guitar player but piano won out; he turned professional in 1993, and was soon gigging around London, sitting in at latin jam sessions run by the UK’s top timbalero, Colombian Roberto Pla, who quickly recruited him into his Latin Ensemble.

Alex signed a solo recording contract with Candid Records in 1998, was named Rising Star at the British Jazz Awards in 1999, and joined Courtney Pine’s band the following year. He’s performed with a wide range of artists in the latin, jazz, soul and reggae genres including Gary Crosby, Sandra Cross, Marc Anthony, Jesús Alemañy, Adalberto Santiago, Jocelyn Brown, Snowboy, Cheo Feliciano, and Cleveland Watkiss. Alex cut three CDs for Candid: Afro-Saxon (1998), Anglo-Cubano (1999), and R&B Latino (2002), the latter creating a genre all of its own, before forming his own label and releasing Aventuras, Colombian/Cuban-influenced latin jazz for the listener. His fifth release, Inglaterra, featured a reworking of Chaka Khan’s anthem Ain't Nobody, sung by Aquilla Fearon, which became a worldwide hit on the salsa scene.

As a composer and musical director, Alex has received commissions from Nitro (Britain’s leading black theatre company), Royal Opera House, Royal Northern College of Music, and SPNM (Society for the Promotion of New Music). He has worked as a record producer for various artists, most recently Gwyn Allen in I Love Louis: A Creole Tribute to Louis Armstrong; written the music for a new theatre production, The Wedding Dance, by Felix Cross, award-winning Artistic Director of Nitro; and, on a more commercial note, composed the theme tune for Channel 4’s How to Look Good Naked TV series. Another recent project was Uplifting Roots, a contemporary soul-reggae project co-led by Jamaican drummer Kenrick Rowe; he also guested notably on Courtney Pine’s Jazz Warriors Afropeans and Sidney Bechet projects.

Alex is a committed music educator, having delivered workshops and masterclasses for young people both in the UK and internationally; he is currently Special Lecturer in Music at the University of Nottingham. This autumn, Alex will lead a week’s course for young musicians at Aldeburgh, the conservatoire established by Benjamin Britten; he is also Aldeburgh’s Composer In Residence during this time, developing his forthcoming Malian music project with master kora player Madou Sidiki Diabate.

The International Soul Music Summit (ISMS) returns to Atlanta, Georgia, September 12th - 13th, 2008 with a new theme, more artists, networking and nightlife activities. With the theme: State of Emergency Part II: Is Soul Music Dead? the International Soul Music Summit is ready to make a global impact. The largest music conference in the world dedicated to the soul genre; the International Soul Music Summit provides mainstream, emerging and independent soul artists, retailers, consumers and executives with information, networking opportunities, and technology on how to build noteworthy careers while continuing to make passionate, timeless music. Terry Bello, Executive Producer/Creator of The International Soul Music Summit and Billboard's 2006 Music Director of the Year, says this year's summit will be the event of the soul music world. The first and second conferences, attracted attendees from across the US and as far away asLondon and Germany. By calling attention to the importance of networking and education to fulfill the soul scene's needs, we have invited people from other music scenes to honest, open and frank conversations about music. We have opened the door for artists to speak directly to the decision makers who are placing music, generating spins and we have provided the opportunity to gain the knowledge and contacts to augment their careers. Bello, a longtime radio personality and the voice of soul radio says, "My goal is to educate people about this music and do everything possible to get this scene and the music to the next level. 2008 Radio Changes
    ALLEN JOHNSTON
It never ceases to amaze me how the corporate radio owners and staffs have talked "down" on Internet radio. Miss direction and in part complete "LIES" have become the norm. Internet radio has been called a passing fancy, nothing to take seriously, impossible to hear while you're in a car and my personal favorite the Internet is for amateurs. The contemporary entertainment market has listened to this crap for the past few years, while the corporate owners were figuring out how to have their own piece of the incredible growing Internet broadcasting pie.

Now comes CBS Radio, making a big move onto the Internet, with 144 of its own stations, its recent partnership with AOL Radio, has added CBS's stations to its own stable of more than 200 channels, including many Internet-only stations. CBS has unveiled PLAY.IT anew software that lets visitors tune into any CBS radio station in the country with a button click - or create stations of their own. CBS owned LAST.FM and PLAY.IT allows music fans to create simple, personalized radio stations, based on personal musical preferences (Advertising is inserted into the stations).

"The AOL affiliation", says Stephen Page, director of new media-integrations and PD of CBS Radio's KYCY, "has almost doubled CBS's streaming audience numbers. CBS was No. 3 before; it was Clear Channel, YAHOO, CBS. AOL was No. 4. Joining with AOL, we've leapfrogged to No. 1."

Not to be outdone Clear Channel has announced a partnership with Katz Media Group, ad sales subsidiary, to form the Katz Online Network, which will soon offer one-stop access to the two companies' 1,200 affiliates, including stations owned by Cumulus and Entercom, and a host of independent Internet channels.

Citadel, owner of the ABC Radio network, offers 182 streaming radio stations in 51 markets by way of Citadel Interactive. A simple tuner allows online listeners to listen to Citadel stations and shop for music downloads while listening.

The Arbitron "rating" books, which have been delivered for years on compact discs, are coming to an end. The PPM (portable people meter will be the ratings company tool of choice. PPM devices electronically pick up radio stations the carrier is hearing or listening to. The first ratings based on PPM are due out in this fall.

Satellite radio rivals XM and Sirius are now merged into "Sirius XM," with Sirius Chief Executive Officer Mel Karmazin running the combined company. No one knows how the programming lineups will shake out, or about a tuner that can receive both XM and Sirius programs. And, despite the merger, most technology writers are saying satellite radio is doomed. The slow economy plus the addition of WIFI in automobiles and Internet radio (which doesn't require a subscription fee) heading into cars as well as stand-alone tuners.
To make it easier to hear your favorite radio station, Nokia unveiled the Nokia N85, the latest Nokia Nseries multimedia computer (phones have now become computers) made to set new standards for mobile entertainment, gaming and sharing. "The Nokia N85 was created to be more than the sum of its parts, offering a complete mobile entertainment package designed for connecting, sharing and discovering," said Juha-Pekka Sipponen, Director, Nokia Nseries. Each Nokia N85 comes with an 8 GB microSD card, up to 30 hours of music playback time and its high-fidelity sound means favorite tracks can be enjoyed virtually anywhere. Build a personal music collection from the millions of tracks and playlists available from the Nokia Music Store or other online music vendors, or synchronize PC and mobile music libraries via USB cable. Alternatively, consumers can enjoy RDS radio or a wide selection of stations via the internet. The 3.5 mm audio jack makes connecting a top-quality headset simple and an in-built FM transmitter lets the Nokia N85 play wirelessly through a car or home stereo to really crank up the sound.

The days of being tied to a computer are OVER. Now you can receive multiple FM radio broadcast signals, Internet radio programming and a massive amount of online downloads directly to your cell phone.
Don't think that the UK is going to be left out of the online music explosion. The BBC Worldwide is planning to launch a targeted web music service starting early next year. Users will be able to stream tracks for free with the ad-funded service from BBC Worldwide. Digital rights management-free tracks, which will play across any brand of media player, will be available for download to own. BBC Worldwide's first major online music initiative will originally offer more than 1,300 tracks and videos from BBC radio and TV shows. But it will eventually be expanded to offer the full BBC music archive of more than 50,000 tracks and 3,000 hours of video. BBC Worldwide signed a partnership with EMI in June to provide online access to content by the music label's artists in the BBC archive and is negotiating with three other major labels - Warner, Sony BMG and Universal. The service is being built so that it can "reflect the discussion about music in other parts of the web", including connecting with users' social networking profiles and with recommendation services such as Last.fm.
FlyTunes, a mobile music streaming service, will now deliver Entercom's Portland radio stations to iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Currently, KGON-FM, KWJJ-FM and KNRK-FM, KNRK's HD2 channels are streaming, with KFXX-AM, KRSK-FM and KYCH-FM to be added by the end of this month.
2008 radio changes have just begun to transform the radio business landscape.
